Why do they call it Boxing Day anyway? Is it the day you get rid of all the boxes from the gifts you received? Or find a spot to put all the ones you have to keep because if the devices that came in them prove to be defective, the guarantee is void if said device goes back without its original packaging?
Is it the day you put all your Christmas decorations back in their boxes? (Or in the case of Christmas lights, tie them in a ball so that next year you’ll have as much fun cursing yourself for not doing a better job packing them away as you did this year?)
Is it the day you go out to the sales and gather even more boxes because finally everything has gone down from it’s pre-Christmas over-inflated price?
For me, Boxing Day is a time to recover from the Christmas frenzy, and has nothing to do with boxes at all… unless you count staring at them, hoping they’ll throw themselves in the recycling bin. I won’t even mention the damned twist-ties that are strewn all over my living room floor. Oh, wait…
What does Boxing Day mean to you?

There’s a benefit to being a grandma. Believe me kid messes were sometimes overwhelming way back, but now I’m down with the presence of a child. I think it adds character… 😀

I’m looking forward to grandmotherhood, but then I’m not. I prefer to try to remain unoverwhelmed as an older mother of a child who doesn’t grow up. 😛

You certainly have a full plate. I think about that as I read your posts. Whatever I go through doesn’t compare to your daily life. I have no flowery words – there’s nothing in the name of advice to sum it up. You’re an awesome person and what you do is equally awesome. I don’t know what your manuscript is about but with what I read you cold take all of it and turn it into a book.
I don’t know why you thought to follow my blog at all but I’m glad you did. I’m glad to know you.

You know, when I was in medical and would moonlight on the psych unit (adult psych) they loved having me there because I generated a calm (so I was told) that surrounded my colleagues and the inmates alike. 😀 😀 😀 😀
I’m relieved there’s still something there. My daughter challenges me on many levels and at times I’ve felt I’ve lost it completely. She’s my baby.
Take as much karma as you need …

I’m a pretty patient person, but once in a while I’ll lose it completely as well. I don’t think any of us, pushed to extremes, with all the stress, can help it. But isn’t it great to know you have someone you can draw strength from?
Thank you for that, Myas. 🙂

I can’t say I’ve heard of it before and the first image was putting up your dukes with Hulk-Hands boxing gloves. “Hulk Smash!”
I know it’s a flaw I picked up from my mother but I put on shoes and a heavy sweater to make the trip to the dumpster Christmas day. Today, we’ve just boxed up all the decorations and put them out in the storage closet. As odds and ends materialize, it’s easier to step out the door, unlock the closet and throw them in. My daughter looked over the living room and said “I forgot how big it really is in here.” Now her son’s big toys aren’t such a menace.
In spite of ourselves we’ve kept with a boxing day tradition from the sound of things …

It sounds as though you have, inadvertently! I never thought of Boxing Day as anything worthwhile, but you’ve shown me it can be. 🙂

Well… ok then! It was more for the sake of sanity – for my daughter anyway. She was a messy kid, somewhere I’ve a picture of her asleep on her pile of stuffed animals in her room she was supposed to be cleaning. That was a first time when it got too quiet there was nothing to worry about. Anyway, she’s still in denial which makes it all the more overwhelming that her son is going to give it back to her… Wherever she looks, there be toys…
For me it doesn’t take away from my aesthetics…

Quiall is correct,Boxing Day is the traditionally the day all servants, tradesmen, estate works received their Christmas pay/ bonus/ gifts , usually in a box. I do believe it is of English pedigree but I could be very wrong on it beginnings! 😉

Besides boxing away the christmas decorations, these days Christmas is so commercialized and we have huge boxing day sales so everyone go out and grab stuff irregardless whether or not they need it and perhaps half of them ended up in boxes and packed away. That’s my modern version of boxing day. 🙂

Boxing Day is traditionally the day following Christmas Day, when servants and tradesmen would receive gifts, known as a “Christmas box”, from their bosses or employers.

I read up on this on wikipedia after I started working with a few Canadians out of Winnipeg. It seemed like no one really knows why it is called Boxing Day but lots of good guesses.
