Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Finding Flounder

Aside from the fact that I can’t usually find a thing I’m looking for in my house if I haven’t seen it in the previous two days (okay, that’s an exaggeration, but the frustration makes it feel that way) most of my lost things lately have been inside my own head.

Concentration. It’s what it all comes down to. Having a thousand things go through my head at once (disclaimer: this post will include many exaggerations. And by many I mean about a million or so.) is conductive to forgetting everything. For instance, twice this morning on my paper route I walked past a house I was supposed to deliver to because I have my novel in my head. A particular scene that I’ve been pondering… can’t remember now which one…

Too many people to take care of, (the last of which is ALWAYS me (exaggeration)) too little money to do all the crazy things my kids demand of me (i.e. taking the bus to the mall which costs $500 each way compared to driving the car which costs only pennies) (guess which one of those is an exaggeration. Right. The pennies one.), and where was I… Oh yeah. Not having enough time to write and edit, and read and CREATE! That’s gotta be the worst because it’s what keeps me sane. So I create in my head while I’m supposed to be doing other things. Like delivering the paper. And running red lights. And floundering around like a beached fish, gasping for air and dying… dying … dyin… dyi… d.

I’m such a drama queen this morning. Time to find some sense in it all.

  1. I write my best stuff when I am laying in bed trying to get to sleep or nowhere near a pen and paper. I feel your pain.
My Tween reckons I exaggerate as well but like… we just know she’s always wrong. Right?

  2. …yeah… 😛 I have painted thousands of pictures and written thousands of poems…most are in my head. I was wondering if we could invent a ‘thing’ that could ‘create’ our creative thoughts… you know- or like when you look at all the stuff you have to do and you can just maek it happen with YOUR MIIIIND. Would be flippin EPIC! …Mayybe I should just get a recorder thing to record my brilliant thoughts as I go along? HEY!!! YOU could DO SO DO that!. You would be the crazy lady who delivers the papers…but I suspect you are already POSSIBLY – that. 😀

  3. Oh, I can relate to this! Even though I don’t have children, I think I just have that sort of head! I left a delivered parcel outside the front door last week, I knew what it was and it was on the front, wide porch. The next morning the delivery man, picked it up and took it back to the post office!! I’ve started sorting some stuff in my house- there are about a million boxes waiting to be sorted, thousands of family photos, clothes, clothes, clothes….furniture….between my friend and me we have eight spare cupboards (no exaggeration) , thousands of books, spare desks, an abundance of lounges… and most of that is not exaggerating.
I have reached the moment of “this mess has to go, it’s messing with my mind!” And, it’s interrupting the significant things- the writing.
So, good luck! I’ll be thinking of you, here on the other side of the world.

    • And I shall be thinking of you too, Kate. 🙂 I’m also trying to empty my mother’s three bedroom condo since she moved into a retirement home – it’s a challenge to say the least.

  4. I can always understand getting distracting and dealing with a train of thought that goes so far it needs a passport. I was doing the dishes the other day and about half way through I got a phone call. That phone call took me away from the job I was doing and when It was over I was gone. I ended up writing a few posts on my blog because the phone call was from an old friend. It made me smile while he talked about his co worker who spent 30 minutes trying to convert him to a christian. I know people like that and I don’t agree with them. So it made me laugh and connected with me…the dishes still aren’t done.

  6. Oh gosh, I can identify with that! Today I cancelled my gym plan because I couldn’t find my gym bag… Only to finally find it in my wardrobe concealed by a bunch of clothes. So I can relate to this 🙂
