SoCS – Three out of Four

According to my horoscope I’m an Air sign, though I’m not sure that’s my favourite element – at least not all the time.

There have been times in my life when I was in my element out of doors, particularly when I worked with horses. I loved being out on horseback no matter what the weather. Except freezing rain. That sucked for everyone. But in general I love nature, and so sitting on a fence rail, breathing in the air and just watching the horses graze was a gem of a time for me.

I love being in a canoe as well. Floating on the water, paddling my little heart out is a great time as far as I’m concerned. Swimming as well – I used to enjoy holding my breath and just laying on the bottom of my neighbour’s pool for as long as I could. Sounds are muffled and it’s simply peaceful.

When I went camping when I was younger I was always the one to tend the fire. Keeping it going was a constant occupation and could keep me busy for hours. Sitting by the fire at night with the crickets singing and a million stars overhead could be heaven. As long as it wasn’t raining. Then again, crickets don’t sing when it rains, and chances are I wouldn’t see the stars either, so scratch that. Ah stream of consciousness and no editing, eh?

The one element I could never really get into is earth. Digging in the garden holds absolutely no appeal to me. Sitting in the garden reading a good book on a nice day… priceless.

  1. You talked about camping too 🙂 When I was young I loved it all, dirt, water, fire and sweet smelling air. We would go to my Grandma’s house out in eastern Oregon, on an old dairy farm, loved the smells, the horses, the smell of the ozone after a summer rain… See all the memories you help dredge up? A very nice post Linda!

  2. Nice images! I have no idea what element my “sign” is…but I agree with you about the digging. I have a marked distaste for dirt, especially when it’s wet. Some people mix water and earth and get a nice home for plants. Me, I just get mud.

  3. I, too, like how you talked about the elements. I’m a fire sign but I love the water. Does that make steam? 🙂 The thing about air, is that we humans all need it 🙂

  4. I’m an Earth sign, Linda, and I hate gardening of any kind. However, sat in a lovely garden with a glass of wine and book in hand (as you say) Priceless!

  5. Neither Mary or I likes to garden. What we were thinking when we bought a house, I’ll never understand. So earth is out for us, too.

  6. Damn. Now I wish I’d written about water instead of ranting. Maybe I’ll do a SoC Sunday post, just this once.

  7. Thanks for the sweet memories of horses, water and fire. I love to stay under water to look at the wavy patterns of light. Goggles help. How about the smell of fresh rain on warm dirt?

  8. Me and my mom used to love gardening. But no time for it anymore. Agree with you on this : garden + good weather + cup of tea + good book(s) – priceless 🙂

  9. You did a great job with this prompt. It’s always fascinating to see the different ways a simple word can be used. I really enjoyed reading this Linda.

  10. I liked the way you went with the phrase “in your element” — that never crossed my mind as I worked on my response. I also like the way you worked through the various elements. I’m with you in your sentiments about the earth. Gardening needs an instruction manual, in my opinion.
