JusJoJan 7 – The Importance of Pop-Culture

I used to hate people who told me, with their nose seemingly turned up in disdain, that they didn’t watch TV. That was back when I used to do barely anything else when I got home from work at night. Knit and watch TV. Every single night.

Fast forward to now: I never watch TV. I don’t turn my nose up at people who do – I understand that their leisure time is as valuable to them as mine is to me – they just choose to do something different with it. But I do have to say that I’m really feeling the effects of NOT watching it. Why?

Pop-culture can be very important in any work of art. It has the ability to connect the artist to his audience in a unique way, like, remember where you were when the last episode of M*A*S*H was aired? Or when we heard those famous words, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”? Can you? I can. But do I know a damned thing about what’s going on on “The Office”? No.

While there is much to be said for spending every minute of my spare time creating fiction, there is still that value in watching TV. My own fiction is evidence in itself. Read this: http://lindaghillfiction.com/2014/11/18/43-scenes-from-the-second-seat-on-the-right-sylvester-and-harry/ and tell me you “get it.” Please. Okay, so maybe you do, but it would still be nice to have something current to refer to.

So I’ve decided to add one more thing to my list of New Year’s Resolutions. Watch more TV.

I am so freakin’ backwards.

P.S. Please leave suggestions in the comments on what’s on that’s good. I’m totally lost.

  1. I tend to watch what the fam watches these days so lots of doing up cars, Yukon Men, Bering Sea Gold, Storage Wars, American (and Australian) Pickers, Deadliest Catch, Dance Moms etc. I am partial to Finding Bigfoot and Mountain Monsters though. Seriously light-hearted entertainment in them! 🙂

  2. You’re hilarious 🙂 I go through periods of no TV and periods of a lot of TV. For me, it has been a matter of my state of mind. When I am overly stressed, I need to check out and TV is a perfect way of doing that. When I’m in a good place, I can’t sit still for TV and I’d rather be doing something else – something more productive. BUT, I do have to say that I still need my daily shot of news just so I’m not completely unaware of what’s going on in the world. If you feel the need to connect to some kind of pop culture, why not check out Hulu? They will actually tell you what’s trending. Although, from experience, I can attest to the fact that I don’t always like the new shows – too much effort to get into a new story line and characters! I still like the old staples – Law and Order, Grey’s Anatomy, etc 😉

    • I think that’s my biggest thing – needing something to do all the time. I have a hard time just sitting. Do it too long and I end up eating to fill in the need to do something, which is never a good thing.
Thanks so much for the suggestions, Merideth. 😀

  3. Mary’s been watching “The Midsomer Murders” on Netflix, but as far as we’re concerned, most of the time we’re watchin MeTV unless there’s something on CBS (for some reason, we don’t like the offerings on the other networks. We’re trying to watch less, too.

  4. I agree with a lot of what’s already been suggested. I’m also geeking about Criminal Minds right now and we started watching Gotham which isn’t half bad. The other one is Blacklist. The first season was awesome; current season not as much. 😉

  5. I don’t watch TV, either. I made the same resolution, but I have missed so much television in the past decade that I don’t think I will ever become current again.
I did catch Battlestar Galactica, the new one, and I loved it.

  6. I didn’t own a television until I got married. If we got divorced, I would try to negotiate keeping one of them, lol! I enjoy my dvr. My dvr doesn’t care how I spend my time, it just records the shows I tell it to and then lets me watch them when I have time.
I like (in no particular order) Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, The Taste, Modern Family, The Big Bang Theory, Homeland, The Good Wife, and Outlander. I feel like I’m missing something…
At any rate, it’s fantastic to have hours of shows waiting for your downtime 🙂

  7. It all depends on what you like, American TV or UK TV. Homeland is brilliant, Coronation Street, BroadChurch, Silent Witness , Emmerdale, Intruders, The Fall…………. The Dome,

  8. I try not to overindulge, but I love watching TV with hubby and the cats. I tend to like darker, more dramatic shows. Breaking Bad is amazing if you haven’t seen it. We loved Dexter, The Wire, House of Cards, American Horror Story. And if you want something funny…Modern Family. I could go on and on…I hope you find something you like 🙂

    • I watched Dexter online and absolutely adored it. Almost at the end of season four of Breaking Bad now… Not as good, but I’m enjoying it.
Thanks very much for your suggestions. 🙂
