We all knew it, didn’t we? I finally found a doctor who was brave enough to stop looking at the x-rays and ultrasounds and take the time to poke, prod and generally make me uncomfortable enough to make a diagnosis on my shoulder pain. I have a rotator cuff injury! *gasp* Two out of four quadrants are affected. Damned if I can remember which ones they are, but the point is, now that I know what’s really wrong I can do what actually felt natural – exercise – to try to fix the problem.
In the last twenty-four hours I’ve come to realize that it’s not really my shoulder that’s bothering me much; it’s all the muscles I’ve let go in the attempt to allow my shoulder to heal. So while I know I can’t push too hard, I can concentrate on exactly what hurts and stop if it’s my shoulder and keep going, albeit gently, if it’s not.
Whoopie!
I’ve also come to realize that being sick can be a good thing. I have some sort of stomach flu that kept me flat on my back for all of Sunday – I slept about 30 hours between Saturday night and Monday morning – but I’m feeling at least awake now and quite happy to be so. Which is why being sick is good. It feels great when it stops!
In all, things are looking up. 🙂

Now you have a clear head and a straighter plan for the shoulder, Linda. Good weekend.

I have been through that several times. If you end up in Physical therapy, listen to them. Do everything they say. I have had PT twice for rotator cuff injuries and both times I have left pain free, albeit after weeks. If you are going to manage it on your own, be patient. When I was in PT, they told me that it could be 2-3 weeks before I felt improvement. It was true, but once it started, things got better quickly. Good luck and I hope for a speedy recover. Keep your chin up (literally, ‘cuz having your head down isn’t a good idea with that injury).

Haha! You just made me look up from my computer screen. 🙂
I’ll have to pay big bucks for PT but I’m seriously thinking about it. Another thought is suing the woman whose slippery concrete steps started this whole thing in the first place… 😛
Thanks for the advice, Dan. 🙂

It’s always such a relief when you get a REAL diagnosis..rather than made to feel that it’s just all in your head. 🙂 Glad you’re on the mend. I’ve tried western medicine on my shoulder, and I’ve moved into…wait for it… Acupuncture. 🙂 If nothing else, it’s relaxing to me.

I’m very tempted to try acupuncture, actually. That and getting back into Tai Chi I think would be very helpful.
Thanks very much for your input, Sabrina. 🙂 I’m glad it’s helped you!

I was skeptical at first, but I’m 3 sessions in and I’ve noticed a considerable difference in my range of motion. But then again, it could be a culmination of time, massage, and now acupuncture. 🙂

It definitely isn’t. 😛 Advil has had little effect, even when combined with Tylenol. Once my stomach upset goes away I’m going to try Aleve. I’ve heard good things about it. 🙂

OH NO. Well I’m glad the sickness gave you some time to rest Err…
I am so sorry for your pain. I hope you can recover. A lot of people end up in surgery, because they just can’t baby it long enough to heal. I’ve had that happen, actually, my left, last winter. I babied it for a couple of months and it healed, but I think it’s so dependent on lifestyle and the extent of the tear and oh, man, I hope yours heals up. So sorry.

Thanks, Joey. The problem is that I’m in so much more pain since I started trying to baby it. It’s hard to know exactly what to do, but I do believe I need to keep the protective muscles around it strong so that I can function. The alternative is not being able to drive, feed Alex, and so many other things that only I can do. Apparently the next step is the cortisone shot… I’m hoping the exercises the doctor gave me will do the trick.
