SoCS – Sticky Friends

I’ve had very few friends in my life who have stuck with me. Not one to make friends easily in the first place–I make great acquaintances–there have been not many to count on to stick with me anyway.

When I was little I had a couple of friends, then in my teenage years there were three or four of us mostly, maybe six in total. Two of those six I still speak to occasionally – my best friend John who I met when we were 17 and my friend Joe. One thing that’s remained constant in my life – I don’t make friends with women very easily. I imagine I’m not “girly” enough.

As for imaginary friends, I’m not sure if I even did those right. I’ve never had “friends” I was able to talk to… no, my imaginary friends are characters I live vicariously through. Right from childhood up until now I’ve been able to sit and create worlds, populate them with interesting people with fabulous lives, and spend time there sometimes going over and over the same scenes for hours on end. I wonder if all writers of fiction do this.

Now I have John, Joe who I text to once in a while, and my neighbour with whom I have coffee once in a blue moon. (She keeps asking me to go, bless her, even though so often I’m not able.) And I have all of you, my faraway friends on the internet. It would be interesting to meet you all in person, and see if any of you “stick.”

  1. When I was younger, I had a lot of friends. As I’ve aged, I’ve winnowed down the number and revel in the few true, sticky friends (along with a couple of new ones who have great potential – like fine maple syrup). Thanks for writing this – so glad I found your blog!

  2. The question of online friends is so interesting. There are some people I’ve met online with whom I interact more frequently – sometimes even more deeply – than those that I know “in real life.”

  4. Happy Birthday SoCS 🙂 And thank you Linda for giving such a lovely platform to explore our blogging capacities and meet such a lovely, inspiring community!
As per your post, I have noticed that nowadays most women have more male friends than women – much easier to connect and get along. This has inspired me to take an “informal study”

  6. I’m the same exact way with friends! I have more guy friends than girl friends, and very few actual friends that have stuck. There are people I’ve known for awhile and who I’ll see every once in awhile who I call friends, and then all of the friends I’ve made on the internet.

I’m also the same way with writing and my characters, by the way. You’re not alone with that lol.

    • Ah good! I’m glad I’m not the only one. 🙂 And as you said in your post, friends are defined in many different ways, but the true ones never change. 🙂 Thanks for your comment, Brittney. 😀

  7. Until I read your post this morning I had nothing for this prompt. Then something struck me and stuck…..so you have inspired me Linda to write, admittedly a fun write but writing all the same.

  8. I wish we could do a WordPress meetup…! But, like you said in terms of not even being able to meet your neighbor for coffee, often the challenges of time/locations makes it hard to make new friends or see old ones. I’m trying to work on that about myself, but it’s tricky…thank God for sticky friends as you wrote about. 🙂

  9. I think we’d stick. I have many life-long friends. I’m the least girly of the girls, but I don’t think about it much anymore.

  10. I just went to a funeral of a childhood friend’s younger. I hadn’t seen my friend in a few years. Before that, another funeral brought ‘out of touch friends’ together. I don’t like those kind of reunions. This year is new, I want to do better. I want to be a sticky friend. Great post.

  11. I love this post and definitely relate! Maybe I’m not “girly” enough either. I love your title, “sticky friends” and your statement, “I make great acquaintances.” I feel that way quite often! In any case, you are always welcome in Colorado!

  12. I can relate. I had a good high school friend, but since adulthood…not too many. I’m surprised at your post…you have sooo many friends online. I bet they’d all stick if you lived closer. Come here! No, I don’t thik you’d want to come to NJ! Nobody does.

    • Haha! I’ve been to New Jersey and I kinda liked it, actually. 🙂 I do appreciate my online friends – almost feels like I’m getting out of the house. 😀 Thanks so much for your comment, Leigh. 🙂

  13. Great post Linda 😉 You are also very welcome here in Spain, if you get the chance one day, I think we can stick together. I haven’t been girly either, so know this with male friends.
