T is for Titter

Another fun word thanks to my thesaurus and the page I flipped to today! 😀

Titter means laugh, but I always imagine it more to be done from behind a hand, hidden lest anyone should catch you doing it. It’s a sneaky laugh, a giggle caused by something that shouldn’t be laughed at, or something just plain naughty.

It reminds me of my dad who once, while putting up curtains over the kitchen sink, fell in – why he was up there when the sink was full of water I have no idea. I was a child at the time. But for years we talked about “that time my dad fell in the kitchen sink.” He was the sort of person who loved to laugh at himself, so there was no tittering going on there.

There are people we can laugh at when they do something stupid or hurt themselves and there are people who would just as soon hurt us back if we were to laugh at them openly. I wonder what it is in a person’s psyche that makes them one way or the other. Is it childhood experience – being bullied for instance? Is it what we grew up seeing how our parents reacted to being laughed at? One way or the other, I always try to gauge another’s sensitivities before I laugh at them. Sometimes it’s not easy to hide that little teehee…

What kind of person are you? I know it depends on the circumstance sometimes, but generally, do you mind if a loved one laughs at you? How about someone you know but don’t know well?

  1. No problem laughing at myself, I know I am pretty ridiculous! Titter, one of those words that make you laugh just saying it aloud – cute post!!

  2. My family has this problem… When someone gets hurt, we laugh. Not because them getting hurt is funny, it’s just that so many of us have hurt ourselves in really hilarious ways so that when someone gets hurt it is now almost ingrained to laugh even as you’re asking if they are all right.

  3. When I think of tittering I think of the Carry On films especially Charles Hawtrey 😀

  4. I’m a laugher unless I or someone else is physically hurt, then not so much. My greatest challenge is that my father-in-law has a reflex to laugh when he is uncomfortable or doesn’t know what to do, and I have snapped at him a few times for inappropriate laughing when I’ve been hurt. I try to remember that it’s just a natural response for him and it doesn’t mean anything, but in the moment it’s hard to remember because it feels like someone is enjoying your misfortune.

But when I do stupid stuff? Oh yeah, that stuff I can laugh at.

  5. Not that it isn’t a great post…D’oh! I just realized how that last message could read. Let me try again. Ahem!
When I hear the word “tittering” it brings to mind someone that is continually giggling at their own hilarity, making them a tittering idiot. OK, not sure if that made it better or worse. I will shush now. Great post!

  6. Love the word “Tittering”. It usually appears in my mind before the word “idiots”.

  7. I laugh every day. I think it is something we are born with, some have no sense of humour, others like myself, probably should be a little more serious.

  9. I think it is a decision you take at one point in your life: You either want to break the cycle of violence or you don’t. And even if you don’t take a decision you take one…..

  10. Of course, I laugh at myself – I often do that publicly when I post! I also laugh when others joke at my expense. If they’re laughing with me, that’s OK. If they’re laughing at me, I laugh too, but then sometimes I get even. I guess I’ll probably go to Hell for that but I suspect it will be worth it.

  12. I laugh at myself (there is an initial surge of annoyance and then it dissolves into laughter) yet i try not to laugh at others unless they are laughing themselves.

  13. I may let out a string of curse words when I hurt myself or when I do something profoundly stupid (which I am famous for doing) but I do end up laughing at myself and don’t mind if others laugh at my expense, btw up here in Saskatchewan Titter has a whole different meaning lol … it means Momma’s Boy …. eg: he is a really nice fellow , but also a real Titter .
bet you won’t find that definition in any dictionary lol

  14. I am the jester. I exist to make people laugh, in any capacity. There are a few times that I don’t appreciate it, but usually, I’m game. Once made a hot chick laugh because I was singing horribly. It was awesome.

  15. I laugh at myself if I trip over or bang my head or something – I also laugh at others when they do the same! Having said that, I make sure they are not hurt first!

  16. Oh my. If I didn’t like laughing at myself and having others join in, I would be one angry old man. You just have to laugh. It really helps.
