What we make of things

They say some things in life only have as much significance as we give to them. I suppose you could say that about everything and everyone – the things and people we find dear to us are those that have a place in our hearts. A person can have significance to us because we relate to them, or because they’re family. An item can be meaningful for its monetary value (if money in general matters to us) or for the memories it conjures.

Then there are the things we make up meanings for; a recurring dream, the sighting of a black cat, or a ring around the moon for instance. For me, for the past twenty years or so, it’s a number sequence that keeps coming up. I think of it as maybe something that pops in once in a while to say, hey, I’m still here watching over you. The number sequence is 911. It doesn’t always have to be precisely in that order – sometimes it’s a whole jumble of 1s and 9s that gets my attention. Sometimes I even have to add up the numbers in a sequence to come up with it. Like this little gem I encountered the other day:

1111119999The 1s are obvious. But then 4+7=11 and for the 9s, 18 halved is two more. So out of this I got 1111119999. I think that’s pretty cool.

By now I predict you’re either you’re intrigued or your finger is hovering above the let’s-move-on button. But before you go, let me ask you; what have you invented a significance for? Is there anything? Or do you just stick to people, objects, or even places? Or hey, feel free to let me know if you think I’m just weird.

  1. Oh, I understand quite well. I am very much a number nut. I was married on 2/27/11 and I can math that into all sorts of things that are pleasing to my brain.

Maybe that’s why I put up with my accounting job. So many interesting numbers to ponder…

  2. Talk about your numerology… For me, the number 1001 is significant, because it’s the product of three consecutive prime numbers (7*11*13).

When I was in college, we had a pinball game in the recreation center we played all the time. A friend of mine was taking a class in ancient religions, so he started giving names to different things like the Baal-Anat Cycle and, when you got a free game, he’d say “Mot has been vanquished!” This was the same guy that did a report on Swaziland when we were in seventh grade and became obsessed with it, even starting a club called the Swaziland Mercenary Force (“One for all and all for Swaz!” was our motto). I was a commander, with the insignia of three spears arranged in a star pattern with a shield on top. We were nuts, I swear…

  3. I am a number geek and loved your stats 🙂 My birthday has mirroring numbers, my brother’s birthday makes a math problem if you use the 6-digit firmat, and i just memorize dates and other stuff without meaning to 🙂

    • Oh me too – I amaze all my family and friends with my ability to memorize numbers. hehe It’s like a party trick.
I also have fun taking a series of numbers and reducing it to one digit. It makes life interesting, doesn’t it? 😀

  4. There’s a bloke at work who can’t stand odd numbers. Even the volume on his tv has to be set to an even value.
So I make a point of always setting any numbered scale to an odd value, in the hope that despite the fact he isn’t aware of it, in some quantum metaphysical way it might annoy him.

So I think we’re both weird.

  7. Definitely. 11:11 – I did a post on it, and it’s how my Teddy Rosalie series came about: http://cordeliasmomstill.com/2015/03/12/meet-teddy-rose/

  8. Not weird at all to me. My recurring numbers are 11 and 7. For decades now. Phone numbers, apartment numbers, address combinations, and we were married on 11/17. Curious and curioser. ☺

    • I get 711 a lot too, but not as much as 911. Good to know I’m not the only one who notices these things. 🙂 But what do you think it means – any clue?

      • No, and I don’t play the lottery either. Sometimes I wonder. My dad won the smaller lottery games many times over the years. And I found out that he used things like his army enlistment date, and my brother’s Netflix ID number. Go figure ???

        • I used to play the lottery – I won (little things – $5, free ticket) for about three months in a row and then nothing, so I stopped. Such a waste of money.
But I refuse to look at the winning numbers, just in case something significant came up when I wasn’t playing. 😉

  9. You’re weird and I like it. But then, I love numerology and synchronicity so clearly I’m not to be trusted 😉
