Just Jot It January 4th – Dachshund

Yes, my prompt for today is “Dachshund.” It’s the most challenging prompt so far – it may just end up being THE most challenging prompt for me. Thanks, Bee. 😉

I’ve lived with a few different breeds of dog in my life – my first dog was a black lab. We had him for only half a year because my parents kept saying he was “too big for the house.” As a five year old I could never figure out what that meant. The dog was much smaller than the house.

So the next time we got a dog it was a black miniature poodle. We named her Cindy. Cindy had seven pups – I wanted to keep them all but my parents would only let me keep one. Perhaps seven (or eight with Cindy) was equal to the size of the lab and would be “too big for the house.” Who knows?

My mom still had Cindy and the pup (her name was Gigi, because what else do you call a poodle?) when I moved out. I got married to my first husband and the first thing we did when we moved in together was bought George from the pound. Guess what kind of dog George was? Yes, a Saint Bernard. He was a fantastic dog. So well trained, he even knew sign language – we could make him lay down past shouting distance. Strangely enough, I never thought he was “too big for the house.”

George was the last dog I owned until I got Winston, just two weeks ago. He’s a beagle mix – the vet thinks he may have some basset hound in him. He’ll be ten weeks old tomorrow; even though he’s just a puppy he has quite the character already. The cats think he’s “too big for the house,” but we humans think he’s just right.

So what does this all have to do with Dachshunds? Only that I’ve never owned one.

The “Dachshund” prompt is brought to you by The Bee at Just Fooling Around With Bee. Please check out her blog!

  3. Never owned a dog; been owned by several cats. So, I wrote a short story about a rescue dog — guess what — a dachshund.
Enjoyed your tale of dogs in your life!

  8. Nice post. You’ve had quite the mix of dogs, huh? Only had a mini poodle, myself. No dachshunds, though. But I do like them. The pastor of my former church had one.

  15. It sounds like Winston is settling in well, and will never be ‘too big for the house!’

  19. Hi Linda, you know, a Dachshund can be “too big for the house” too ;-). Thanks for the shoutout and I am not having ice cream. It’s a cupcake :-). Here is my short take on the Dachshund https://justfoolingaroundwithbee.wordpress.com/2016/01/04/just-jot-it-january-4jan16/

  20. I’ve never owned a dachshund either – I always thought I’d step on one and kill it! Beagle mixes are the sweetest dogs – a bit difficult to train but real sweeties!

    • This one must get his smarts from the other part of the mixture if Beagles are hard to train. He’s learning really fast. 🙂
P.S. I’ve only stepped on him once. So far. 😛

  21. We have a Daschund mix. She is have Daschund, 1/4 Basset Hound and 1/4 German Shepherd. She is the spunkiest dog with a huge personality and my 4 year old’s best friend.
She was our first pup and has that special something in her. One of a kind for sure.

  22. We had a long haired dachshund when we were kids, called Petsy, (I’ve still no idea where that name came from) and she was beautiful.
She did get a bit overweight as she got older and, having such little legs, she didn’t like the snow because her tummy would freeze as she ploughed through it.

  27. We had a dachshund briefly, when I was like 8. I think we were long-term pet-sitting? Her name was Stella Rae and she was a nice dog.
I’d love to have a St Bernard…that someone else grooms. 😉
I know a poodle named surfer, and here’s the best part — if you know anything about poodles, anyway — he HATES swimming! Haha!

  30. Hi I am back been to the gym and done the shoping!
We have never had a Dachshund either. When I was a little girl we had a wonderful Hienz57 dog called Steve (he was a Christmas present and arrived on the feast of Stephen, Christmas Eve.) He was lovely and I could dress him up and push him around in the pram.
Hubby and I, and the boys of course, had a fabulous black Labrador it broke all our hearts when he died.
Our house what house it was, has always been big enough for a dog, cat or gerbil. Enjoy your pup!! XXX
