#SoCS – Winter Tires on Deck

When I lived in Quebec I had no choice – winter tires are mandatory. If you get caught without them after, I think, the middle of November you get a ticket. If you get in an accident without them your insurance doesn’t cover you. I had a great mechanic there. I think he liked me. Then again, I spent thousands of dollars at his shop getting my transmission fixed on my Montana. When I bought snow tires from him he offered to store my all-seasons for free for the winter. He labeled them “Linda Montana” so he’d know who they belonged to.

Anyhow, they’re talking about enforcing the same law in Ontario. I really didn’t see much difference when I drove on snowy roads, if any, so it seems like an unnecessary expense. But there you go. Luckily I don’t need a mechanic in my life anymore. My best friend is one. Wow, did that sound bad? Can’t change it now. Sorry John.

It’s really cold out today. Finally. -38 with the wind. I was afraid my car wouldn’t start, but it did. Not without complaint though. I’m looking forward to the warmer weather, though I have a new problem…

The puppy has been going outside to do his business, but my yard has too many things in it that can hurt him, so he’s restricted to the deck. My deck has become a poop deck. It needed a good cleaning anyway, so as soon as the nice weather comes we’ll scrub it, sand it, sandblast it, whatever it takes to really really get it clean and then stain it. I just hope the puppy isn’t too attached to it being his personal toilet. Dinner on the deck could get interesting.

No one without a boat should have a poop deck.

  2. Yup, good old Ontario looking for yet more ways to make us pay for something with no choice in the matter. 😦

  3. Love this post. My dog hates going all the way down, off the deck, especially when it’s this cold, but I fenced in my back yard for a reason. Takes a lot of cleaning up come spring, for sure.
    What’s that deck for?
I thought those winter tires do help, but I don’t drive, so what do I know?

    • The deck’s for the smell of food cooking on the barbecue, not fragrance de puppy! hehe
Winter tires help if you normally use summer tires. All seasons, for the most part, seem to me to be just as good. 🙂

  5. Brrrrr… -38 sounds way too cold for me! Good luck with your poopy puppy and your winter tyres!

  6. I fear dogs get quite attached to the places of great relief when they are young 😉

  7. Aww, Little Winston, glad he’s feeling better. I’d hate to have to go out in that cold weather to do my business. Come summer, he’ll probably love going on the grassy areas!

  8. Fun tie in to the S0CS. I used to live in Michigan where you had to have snow tires. Never helped.

  9. You have a few months to train Winston to use the poop ground (preferably not under the deck) rather than the poop deck.
My mother had a story about having to read a poem in school that used the phrase “poop deck” and not being able to do so without laughing. She was an inland girl. Had she been from the coast . . .

  10. The winter tyres are a good thing I would think, as for a poop deck well under the circumstances necessary too though I’ll look twice should I ever have dinner on your deck.

  11. Tire as a noun and not a verb – good one. Good luck with your poop deck!

  13. Interesting about the winter tires. We have all-weather tires here. The Mister could tell you more.
I’m sorry about your poop deck. I feel confident that you’ll be able to train puppy to go back in the grass, and he may well prefer it without any assistance. Might just be a winter thing. Hard to say.
I’m really glad it’s not -38 here. It got cold enough some pipes froze last night, but nowhere near that. Stay warm!

    • Not sure what we do differently, but our pipes don’t freeze unless our power goes off and the house dips down to almost freezing inside. I can’t imagine what a pain in the ass that would be all winter (most winters).
Hope the puppy likes the grass. He’ll be spending most of his time out there, I’m sure, when it warms up. He likes it outside. 🙂

      • I don’t know either, but it has to be a construction issue, as when we were in Georgia (where it’s subtropical) they froze more often there than I’d ever heard of up north. Not ours, but people we knew. Anything below freezing could do it. We have a crawlspace, so that’s part of it, and two of our pipes are in outer walls. When the temps near 0 or lower, we open the vanity doors and make sure the vents are open at night. I do kinda find it interesting.

I hope Winston tires of pooping on the deck before you need it for summer meals!
I liked the tyre tale too but here in the UK we spell tyre differently to you Canadians and Americans! xxxx

  15. I like when we write things in an SoCS post and adhere to the “can’t edit that” policy. Everybody needs a tire guy 🙂
