One-Liner Wednesday – Ain’t got no clue

Can anyone explain to me why in math, two negatives added together make another negative, but in English, two negatives make a positive?

Anyone who would like to participate, feel free to use the “One-Liner Wednesday” title in your post, and if you do,
you can ping back here to help your blog get more exposure. To execute a ping back, just copy the URL in the address bar on this post, and paste it somewhere in the body of your post. Your link will show up in the comments below. Please ensure that the One-Liner Wednesday you’re pinging back to is this week’s! Otherwise, no one will likely see it but me.

NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, like Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.

As with Stream of Consciousness Saturday (SoCS), if you see a ping back from someone else in my comment section, click and have a read. It’s bound to be short and sweet.

Unlike SoCS, this is not a prompt so there’s no need to stick to the same “theme.”

The rules that I’ve made for myself (but don’t always follow) for “One-Liner Wednesday” are:

1. Make it one sentence.

2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.

3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.

4. Add our very cool badge to your post for extra exposure!

5. Have fun!

  9. All I can figure is that English uses logical comparisons, kind of like saying “A => B” (A implies B) is the same as “NOT (A & NOT B).” Or something like that…

  18. Addition, multiplication, positive, negative, when added two negatives increase (become a bigger negative), but when multiplied they become a positive…huh? That’s why I stick to words, not numbers…and wine.
Hey, did someone say wine? 😉

  19. I’m going to feel stupid when someone points out to me that this is a rhetorical question (and a good one) – but I answer them all the time.

Worse yet, I’m going to give you a math-based answer. if you multiply -2 x -2, the answer is 4 – in English, “I am not not going there” is kinda-sorta multiplication, as opposed to “I am not going there, really, I’m not.” So, it works the same way…if your head is more math-based than English-based.

In Maths: you are in negative, still you fetch one more then you get into one more negative.
In English:Two negative person meet n share their emotions, the two strike into conversation n try to help each other, hence it converts to positive notions. 😛
