#SoCS – Smell

I have a funny smell in my house right now. I think it’s a bag of garbage that needs to get out to the garage. Maybe I should put it out before it leaves by itself. Yeah, it’s gonna grow legs soon – that’s how ripe it’s getting.

It must really suck to have a sniffer as good as my dog’s. I can throw a dog biscuit out into the back yard and he’ll find it with his nose. He’ll start with a wide circle and go around and around in smaller circles until he finds it. It’s a target.

Winston

He’s definitely a hound.

When I write, I try to include smells. It helps to put a reader into the story when they can relate a smell to a scene. So what would fiction for dogs be like? All smells with the occasional command stuck in that they can relate to?

Other dog, other dog, cat, food, bone, SIT! Pant pant omnomnomnomnom…

  3. Maddie loved to dig and sniff. I can’t imagine what she knows that I don’t. She was commenting about the bag of garbage to the north 😉

  4. I read something recently (cannot for the life of me recall the title) where the author included something smell-related in almost every scene. I found it remarkable for two reasons – 1.) It made me realize how infrequently this sense is called upon in writing – 2.) I was mildly put off by all the sniffing – it was unsettling in a way – for me, I think it triggers a fight or flight response related to using smell as a test for danger – is it safe? I’m weirdly wired that way. 🙂

  5. Dogs seem to find smells very important. My neighbour takes her dog for walks just so the dog can go around every pole and tree and catch up on the pee mail.

I like how they don’t care what they smell, they’re so non-judgmental about it… But then, I’m also, “Ew, No! Don’t eat that!”

  9. Only you would come up with the question of what fiction is like for dogs! Thanks for the chuckle:)
