#SoCS – Tin Can

If I could, I’d put some love in a tin can and seal it tight.

There would be no expiry date on my tin can,

But it would be there for you to open

Any time you need it.

Even if I’m gone.

I have no idea where that came from. I don’t think people in the US call cans–the kind food comes in at the grocery store–tin cans. They’re just cans. Are they even made of tin? I dunno. I do know if they were dented you shouldn’t eat what was inside. An entire group of arctic explorers were poisoned and died because of botulism that came from cans. There was a movie about it.

Would love in a can be spoiled by a dent?

I think it would just give the love a little extra character.

I used to love tinsel as a kid. I still love sparkly things. I haven’t had tinsel on my Christmas tree in years, though. My ex went to the store at the last minute one of the first years we were together and all he could get was this really ugly pink and orange tinsel. It was like the Charlie Brown of tinsels. Only I didn’t have that much sentimental attachment to it. I think it lasted one year before it got tossed.

I need to get tinsel. Maybe I’ll find some after Christmas.

Have a very merry one, my friends. And if you don’t celebrate Christmas, enjoy whatever you do celebrate. Love you all. Thank you for reading and for sticking around. 🙂 ❤

  1. Only if the dents were caused by gas changes inside the cans. Cans damaged in transit or stores are just damaged. No danger. I love garland. All colors and styles but not so much silver tinsel. Happiest of holidays, Linda!

  3. I’m so old, I remember when tinsel was made out of tin, hence the name. Now (at least in the US), it’s made out of shiny plastic. Not the same, but better than nothing. If you have a couple of tin cans of that love to spare, I’d like a six-pack. I’ll pour it in the ocean and let it circulate in the water cycle and get into everybody’s cells. I can dream, can’t I?

  5. We were just reminiscing about tinsel last night. I haven’t seen it in years and wondered if they still made it

  7. We do call them tin cans down here. I like the idea of a can filled with love that doesn’t expire. We could all use one one in a while.

  9. I can’t think of any other place I’d rather hang out.

Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 Cheers to the idea of dented love filled cans with extra character. Ready for use just in the nick of time.

  10. I grew up calling them tin cans. I doubt a dent or two could damage the love. You’ve shared a beautiful thought, Linda. May your cupboard be full of such cans.

  11. I remember when I was little, everyone’s trees were covered in tinsel and some kind of fluffy stuff that imitated snow. I think the white fluffy stuff was banned because it was mostly fiberglass and killed pets and wasn’t all that healthy for people, either. As for tinsel, I think it was the cleanup issue that got is out of most homes. It got into everything and pets ate it, both dogs and cats. But the trees looked so pretty with all that silvery tinsel.

I love the idea of a “tin” of love 🙂 We should all have one, real or imaginary. A letter or a box or a bottle. Something just full of love for anyone who wants a little piece of us to hug.

  12. Probably the cans used to be made of tin, hence the name.

  13. Lovely saying at the top. Years ago, from what I have been told, cans were made of tin, aka tin can but due to breakdown the tin they could become contaminated and be poisonous. Then they started making them out of aluminum. I still don’t but dented cans.

    • Neither do I. I guess some habits are hard to break. And yes, that’s what I thought. There’s no way companies these days could afford the risk of being sued.
Thanks so much for your kind words, Anita! 🙂

As for tinsel I have it by the bucket load. Happy Christmas Linda and a prosperous new year 💜
