Sunrise – #JusJoJan Jot #10

I’m going out on a bit of a limb with today’s prompt in that I’m stretching to use it.

It was brought to mind by a comment on Facebook concerning my misstep and my broken laptop of the last time I was carrying something precious and I did the same thing. What actually happened, both last night and that last time was I thought I was on the last step but I still had two to go. So when I took that last step, I realized I’d stepped out too far, thinking I was stepping onto the floor. I could have caught the edge of the bottom stair, but I made the conscious decision in that split second to try to take both. Catching the edge of the last stair would have caused me to fall, but I might have saved the laptop. As it was, I decided to save myself instead. All in that split second.

The brain’s ability to make such decisions in that much time is even more astounding than my mad Paint skillz.

I know you’re still wondering what all this has to do with a sunrise. I’m getting there.

The last time this happened to me, I was carrying this guy.

Except at the time, he was only a couple of months old. That time, again I had the presence of mind to make a decision: fall and save what I was holding, or save myself.

I ended up in the emergency room, he didn’t even wake up.

But he did live to see another sunrise.

  2. I got a little Mini ptsd reading this…that’s almost exactly how I got the three plates and 24 screws/pins that I now have in my leg. 😳 Be careful. Stairs are dangerous and should be outlawed.

  3. Sorry for your hurts, but good choice! I remember looking out the window where #3 daughter (11) was sitting on a railing with #4 daughter (1). I was just about to get the baby off that before she fell…when she fell. Off the high side, of course–not high-high, but high enough. Daughter #3 THREW HERSELF OFF, TOO, AND GOT UNDER THE BABY, cushioning her fall. Guess who didn’t get in trouble for putting the baby in danger in the first place.

  5. I’m so glad you and your child are both still alive and seeing sunrises. 😁

  6. Been there done that. And what I was holding remained unhurt as I somehow managed to save myself as well. Scary feeling thinking you are landing on the floor when you are still actually on the stairs. Happy Friday, Linda!

  7. Ha the last time I had a bad fall I was holding laundry. Not sure if I did the right thing hanging on to it or not. It probably cushioned my fall a bit but still did damage to my knee and elbow. Glad you’re ok and hope the laptop gets fixed.

  9. That is scary but I get you. I fell with my son in my hands and saved him but ended up with a bad back that developed sciatica! And I fell down the stairs when pregnant with Lil Princess… But you save them, don’t you? After all, you made them…

  10. So glad you saved yourself. I know the broken laptop is inconvenient. But it’s harder to replace you or your son. Sonrise?

  12. My MIL tells a story similar, about her Daddy falling on the front steps of the church, youngest child in his arms. He practically turned a cartwheel, but he never let go of his baby. Small miracles 🙂

  14. Yep, your mind made the right split second decision both times: he’s much more precious and irreplaceable than a laptop.
