#SoCS – Celebrate the little things

The thing about anniversaries is, if you think about them too much, you’ll realize how much time has passed and not only that, how old you’re getting. A milestone is just that–a marker to indicate how many miles you’ve gone. And a reminder of the toll they’ve taken on you.

But it’s not all necessarily bad. (Keep in mind I’m typing as I think, so this could easily go wonky on me.) With the miles come experience. Experience is golden in that if you let it, it provides an excellent teacher. On the other hand, if you let it, experience can provide you with bitterness. Because, let’s face it, not all experiences are positive, and not everyone can find the good in a negative experience. It could be said that some have no positives … unless you really REALLY dig deep.

My question is, if we celebrate a little every day the little things that happen, no matter how small or positive or even negative, does it make the bigger celebrations less like milestones? Yeah, probably not. (See my “wonky” disclaimer above.)

Little things I’m celebrating today?

I’ve been clumsy. I almost dropped Alex’s $750 feeding pump (but didn’t!), and somehow I managed to get butter in the dog biscuit box and dog biscuit crumbs on my toast. Honestly? Not as good as marmalade.

The positive in this? I get to tell you about it. And hopefully in the telling there won’t be a third thing. …who am I kidding? There’s always a third thing. But it likely won’t be falling down the stairs and throwing my laptop over my shoulder in the process (the last majorly clumsy thing I did), because I learned to pay attention to what I’m doing when I come down the stairs.

Something to celebrate!

Me and my buddy Winston, taken five minutes ago. I really need to go on a celery diet.

  2. I *almost* feel like I shouldn’t comment, considering I’m such a grumpy puss, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t learned a few things over the last sixty years. Celebrating the little things is so important. That doesn’t mean throw a party every time you find a great parking spot (although it could!), but being able to recognize that there are still bright spots out there is really helpful. (I need to remind myself of that.) I don’t think it makes the big things less big. In fact, I think you grease the wheels by celebrating the little things, the big celebrations are easier (and with less mental chatter about not deserving it, or that it isn’t such a big deal, or whatever negative nattering your inner pain in the butt gets up to). It’s not a zero sum game. There’s always plenty of celebration to go around. (Geez, someone is going to accuse these typing fingers of being someone not me…)

  4. Five years! Woot! It’s a good thing. Sometimes SOCS and #ThursdayDoors are the only posts I make it to in a week! Thank you so very much for this service you provide me — now five years!
    You and Winston ❤
I'm just a silver linings kinda gal. Sometimes it's hard, but always worth a look 🙂

  6. Five years is a long time to keep those “whatever day” post series running and still garnering enthusiasm from all those other bloggers. You’re a star in the blogosphere, Linda. Congratulations!

  7. I like remembering and tend to give myself a nice pat on the back or treat myself to some little something (like Starbucks or a new book) to acknowledge the big milestones. Congratulations again on five years. You and Winston make an adorable portrait.

  8. If we can get celebrating the little things to be a regular habit, the act of celebrating has long term positive effects reaching beyond milestones. If firmly believe that even if I don’t remember to do it as much as I could. But hey, we’re human and we’re learning. And that’s something to celebrate! I bet Winston celebrates butter in his biscuits. 🙂

  11. I don’t want to alarm you unnecessarily …. but milestones do not tell you how far you have come, but instead how far you have left to go. So life is far too short to indulge in such silliness as a celery diet.

  12. I agree, if you celebrate the little things and find positives vs negatives, the celebration is bigger. On a daily basis, we don’t have the experience to look back on. Even though you act very WONKY since I’ve known you, it can’t be that bad. You are to smart for that or just to damn tired. In November I fell halfway down the stairs, leaving the hospital with more hardware than when I entered. My elbow is still healing and my wrist surgery scar will take a while longer. Maybe I’m the clumsy one.

  13. I’m guessing Winston doesn’t mind butter on his biscuits. I don’t think we can celebrate too much or too often. It just means that life is worth celebrating. Thanks for all the prompts you’ve given us and all the stuff you’ve shared. You’ve made lots of people happy – now that’s worth celebrating!

  17. Celebrating the little things of the day is one of my favorite ways to go to sleep. Another one is to think of names in alphabetical order. Five female A names, five female B names…or male ones; random ones or people I know, or titles of movies or whatever I set as my goal. I’m usually asleep by F at the latest.
