#SoCS – Leave it alone

Why do we have such a hard time leaving some things alone?

In my case, a book. Used to be if I started one, I had to finish it, no matter how boring it was or how much I disliked it. I couldn’t stop until I’d read the painful last page. But the older I get and the more books I want to read, I’m getting better at it.

In Alex’s case (he’s my son), something that hurts. If he has a scab, he’s gotta pick it. No matter how much I tell him to stop (that actually makes him do it more), or try to explain to him that he’ll make it worse and possibly the body part will fall off, he can’t leave it alone. He’s covered in scars from tiny scratches that he turned into major wounds.

No, nothing has fallen off. Yet. And maybe the fact that I tell him it might and it never does is why he never believes me and, thus, never stops picking. Unfortunately, I can’t cut off any of his body parts while he’s asleep just to show him I’m right (he’ll wake up if I do and then the whole experiment will be ruined), so instead I’m stuck with a kid with scars. And I have to watch him make himself bleed, which might actually be more painful for me than it is for him … If it hurt him that much, he wouldn’t do it. Right?

I’m rambling.

I’m just going to leave this here.

Here are some leaves.

  1. Lol! Now doing that would be one helluva an experiment! I know it wouldn’t work 😀 but you might raise some eyebrows!

  3. Good timing, Linda. Just this morning I gave up on a really boring book – and I always finish books no matter what. But 50 pages in, I just couldn’t take any more. Sorry about Alex. Hopefully, he’ll outgrow that.

  4. Yeah, I find it hard to give up the books too. Wonder why that is?

  5. I was a scab-scratching kid and while I’ve gotten better at leaving them alone, I WANT always to scratch them off. My mother feels bad for you, while since my own kids are like that, I’m just like, “Well get a Band-Aid, I don’t want blood everywhere.”
I’ll give up on a book fairly easily. It’s not like I don’t have other books that won’t bore or frustrate me to tears! 😉

    • Alex has been ripping bandages off since he was NG-tube-fed. That was from 0-6 months of age. He extubated himself at 5 months. Apparently he could breathe on his own, thank you very much. Needless to say, he bleeds on everything.
And I’m with you on having too many books to read. So many, so little time …

  6. I identify with Alex a bit with scabs and bits of stuff that I should just leave alone. My wife tells me not to pick, or scratch, but how can you not?

  8. We loved the photo of the leaves. Those colors are so beautiful! 😀

Mom says she is the same with movies. She would start watching it, knows it’s a bad movie but keeps on watching it in case it gets better, but then it doesn’t, and in the end she wondered why she ever bothered watching the whole movie! 😂

I think I am like Alex. Something bit me on my leg and now I keep licking it. Mom says it started getting better but I just had to keep on licking it, and now she is covering it up so I can’t get to it. I am not very happy about that but I guess she knows best. Moms like you and my mom doesn’t want us to get hurt or hurt ourselves, but we don’t listen, do we? 😜
