Some Friends Are Publishing Tonight…

A brilliant post by one amazing writer about two more great writers who are about to publish their novels. Please check them out and support them. 🙂

Ellespeth's avatarViews From A Poet

It’s ever amazing – to this one, at least – how quickly and how strong the bonds become within my small circle of WordPress friends. The support offered and received is such a grace in my life. With this in mind, I would ask you to keep in your thoughts (and visit the blogs of)  two such wonderful people. Both are releasing – as I type – their novels!!!   Please visit their blogs and support them…

http://whenibecameanauthor.wordpress.com/ …Briana Vedsted is releasing her new book, A Girl Named Cord.

http://legendsofwindemere.com/ …Charles Yallowitz is releasing another in his Windemere series,
Legends of Windemere: Prodigy of Rainbow Tower

I’m sending hopeful and positive thoughts in their direction. I am acknowledging their dedication and hard work. My very best wishes to both of you dear, dear friends.

Evil Corporations (a rant)

An amazing post on the importance of research by Misha Burnett. Serious authors should give this a read!

MishaBurnett's avatarmishaburnett

I had to put down a book today because I couldn’t maintain my suspension of disbelief.  It’s a pity, because I was really enjoying it.  In fact, I intend to pick it up again, because the author has some very original ideas and a solid style.

However, the villains of the story are a group of people who work for an EVIL CORPORATION, and I just don’t buy them.  The author was slathering on the anti-capitalistic polemic with a trowel, and it just got too thick to wade through any more.  I mean just in case we couldn’t pick up on the fact that they were bad guys because they are trying to bring Lovecraftian Elder Gods back to Earth to destroy everything and they experiment on unwilling human subjects, the author helpfully reminds us that they work for an EVIL CORPORATION that is GREEDY and WANTS TO MAKE…

The Arrogant Light

I just ran across this wonderful poem by my friend, Paul Davis, in my reader. Check it out!

Paul Davis's avatarProject Volden

I don’t mean to be arrogant,
Little Butterfly,
But what would you do without me,
The Arrogant Light?

I am your light,
Little Butterfly.
Your path seems so dark
Until I shine through.
I let you see
And guide you.

I am your heart,
Little Butterfly.
You don’t know which way
To flutter, so you get lost
In the words of others.
I whisper “Who are you?”
And you are found.

I am your courage,
Little Butterfly.
When you weep and
Your wings get wet,
I dry them
And you continue your flight.

I am your protector,
Little Butterfly.
The webs of spiders snag you
And I untangle your wings
That you may be safe.

I am here for you,
Little Butterfly,
The Arrogant Light
I will be here for you.

Don’t ‘Black Knight’ Your Characters

Excellent advice from Charles, and a great great movie clip to boot 🙂

Charles Yallowitz's avatarLegends of Windemere

One thing that drives me nuts is when I read a book or watch a movie/TV show and characters ignore injuries.  Running full-speed with a broken leg, bouncing around with busted ribs, and so many other mistakes that seem sloppy. My characters get hurt all the time, so I have to remember to slow them down or add in something that explains how they can keep going.  A barbarian’s rage or a magic spell can work, but you must always remember to have them react to the injury once that boost is over.  Unless that boost comes with a healing spell, they’re going to be hurting later.

I can only think of three reasons (here with solutions) for this to happen:

  1. The author forgets about the injury, which is something that should be fixed in an editing run.  Once that character is hurt, you have to read through the rest…
