It’s been a week since I posted Getting Views is Like Pulling Teeth in which I complained that since the reader went all to hell my view count has gone down, so I thought I’d post a follow-up on the conclusions I’ve come to.
As Chris McMullen (http://chrismcmullen.wordpress.com/) pointed out, the new pop-up window in the reader does seem to provide us with what counts as a view. I know this because I’m now getting as many views as I am ‘likes.’ This is something they’ve fixed recently, obviously, because last week when I posted, I wasn’t. I’d be happy to know if anyone else is finding the same result.
But at the same time I’m finding my views per visitor as dropped substantially and I think this is really where the problem lies. While it’s great to have lots of views for the post we just published, the pop-up window still discourages people from visiting our sites, from following, and from seeing what else we have to offer. It’s especially damaging for those of us who are selling something on our websites, particularly if we’ve paid for the site in order to do just that.
I encourage everyone who has a problem with this to complain. Here is the link to the forum which discusses it: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/reader-changed?replies=284
They have already addressed the issue of my initial complaint, (not to me personally) which was to please put the word count back in the reader for each post. If you click on the word count, now that it’s back, you bypass the pop-up window and go straight to the original site. If you click on the title of the post, you get the pop-up window. However, if the post is short and doesn’t have any more words than fit in the reader preview, it’s obviously not an option – you just get the pop-up.
I did change my reader view to “Read full post…” and I believe that has helped my view count at least. You can do this by going here, and I quote: “In your dashboard go to Settings/Reading and then scroll down to “For each article in a feed, show”. Select either Full Text or Summary.” Thanks to mewhoami (http://mewhoami.wordpress.com/) for this tip.
Anyone who is still following this thread and is still interested in this topic, I’d love to know if you’ve made or seen any changes in the past week and have come to the same conclusions, or if you plan to write and mention your dissatisfaction with this awful ‘improvement’, in the forums. I think the more we talk about this issue with Word Press, the more we’re likely to have something done about it.
Thanks very much for being on board with me on this. 🙂

What is this ‘pop up’ window people are talking about? I’ve not seen anything. And it seems that your suggestions are only for those who are self-hosted because I don’t have those same settings on my WP-hosted blog.

The pop-up window is in the reader, when you click on the title of a post. It comes up and asks you if you want to read the original or just what’s in the window.
I have the same free wordpress account you do, so you should be able to find the settings…

Thank you so much for posting Linda and all your actions as I really appreciate this. My viewing numbers died, but the trouble was this was also a time when I wasn’t posting due to a family bereavement. In coming back my figures have shot back up again, but my experience has been similar in that there are fewer views per visitor than was happening previously. Personally if I am seeing a post in my reader which I like I will go and see the original as that is what I would want for my own posts – if I stop to click to view that is because that is exactly what I want to do. Not go to an interim page. Unfortunately it will put many others off. Many, many thanks Linda, MM 🍀
I have been having major issues with reader skipping a load of posts etc. and losing followers…You can add me to the list of unhappy at the new interim window.

I changed mine to read full post a few days ago, and just noticed they changed it so the pop up window doesnt appear anymore and you it takes you straight to the blog post in a new window so you dont lose your place of where you were on reader. It was a much needed change.

I’m still getting the pop-up window when I click on a blog post title in my reader. If I click on the word count for the post however, it goes straight there.
I don’t know what you mean about the new window thing though… maybe that’s to do with the browser you use. I’m using Firefox, and when I click on a post it opens in a new tab, so I never lose my place on the reader – unless I look at that lovely orange box on the top right hand side of the screen, and then I’m right back to the top of the reader again. Very frustrating, I agree!
Thanks for the comment 🙂

Yep, that’s new since they put the word count back in, which I think they did a couple of weeks ago. Now all they have to do is get rid of the useless pop-up window and we’ll all be happy I think.

Here to say I think the pop up window is terrible. I haven’t done much reading since it started. I will go ahead and complain and I encourage others to do so.
I’ve also lost all my share numbers. Now looks like nobody has ever shared anything on Facebook Twitter etc. !!
Anyone else having other odd WP stat problems?

I’m just so glad you wrote this post! I didn’t know there was a forum, but don’t you know, thanks to you, I’ve voiced my dislike for the pop-up. I have crazy stats, can’t tell if anyone’s actually reading me unless they post a decent comment. This morning, I was writing a post, and saw someone just liking post after post after post, without possibly reading them. Then, I’ll talk to people, and they’ll tell me how they loved the blog about whatever, or how they read such and such on my blog. Then there are the email people…And who are these people who share me on Facebook? lol
So I’ve never been able to understand my stats.
But as a reader, I’m super annoyed to open two windows for every post I want to read. And I click “Original” or whatever, so I don’t know how that affects the writer.
Anyway, thanks for the post and the link!

The ones that get me are those who ‘like’ a post milliseconds after I publish it. It’s like, are you serious?
I wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested in my follow-up, to be honest. It seems, though, that the reader is pissing off a lot of people.

I absolutely hate the new pop-up window. I noticed it when I logged on this past week to read a daily post made by someone I follow. I was a little irritated when I first saw it and thought “Am I seriously going to have to click twice to get to their blog?!” I soon found out that I could click the word count to get straight to it – which honestly seems a little silly. I mean, not that I mind where I have to click and all, but it seems silly that if you click the title, it brings up the pop-up window, but you can move an inch down the page and get to the actual blog. I don’t know, but it just seems a really irritating new change despite the fact that it’s clearly messing with view counts.

I follow a lot of photography blogs. Often with these there is no word count at all, so if I know there’s more than one picture to look at on a post, or I want to take a closer look, I have to go through the pop-up window to get there.
You’re right, it’s very irritating!
Thanks very much for your input! 🙂

When I read your initial post I had just become aware of the new pop up window and didn’t like it at all. Anything that adds another barrier doesn’t make sense. I want to know what the reasoning behind it was. It all seemed to work perfectly well before. It wasn’t broken why fix it?
I haven’t changed any settings but I may do so now. And I’ll drop WordPress a line. I’d rather see it gone. Thanks for keeping us up to date.x

No problem. From what I’ve gathered from the comments on this and the other post, quite a few people hadn’t put the reader and the view count drop together, particularly the newer bloggers, and of course, I wasn’t sure myself. It’s when we get a bunch of us together to compare stories that these things come to light.
Thanks very much for your input! Let me know if the change makes a difference 🙂

At the time that you wrote your initial post about this, I had my reader set on ‘full text’. But, I soon noticed that the number of older posts being read on my blog dropped drastically. Most people would read the new post on the reader and leave. So, I decided to change it to ‘summary’. I was afraid that by doing so I would lose views. Luckily, I haven’t and even more importantly people started reading my older posts again.
I think both choices have their pros and cons. I am glad that they made it possible to bypass the reader by clicking on the word count. That helps tremendously.

As you said initially, the “Read this post…” thing is annoying, but at least it gets people to view your actual site rather than just the new post.
Thanks so much again for the instructions on how to change from full to summary view. 🙂 Glad to have your input and observations.

I have noticed this pop-up window as well, and I don’t care for it either. If I take the time to click on the title I am obviously interested in the post. There is already a summary in the Reader. Two summaries does nothing for me. I noticed, also, that my stats went up one day, and then it dropped to like nothing. I just thought people weren’t reading my posts, or they weren’t that good. I will go in and make the changes, thanks for sharing them. I will also re-blog this as I know there are others who are having the same issue.

Thanks for your observations and for the re-blog. I think there are a lot of people out there who are confused over their stats, and I’m positive the reader changes are the main cause.
And you’re perfectly right – what’s the use of clicking on the title of a post just to see what you’ve already seen? Makes no sense.

Ah, I see, I can come straight here to read if I click on the word count, I have a bit of a habit of clicking on the title and I really hate the pop-up window.
The strange thing though is my stats have gone up in the last few weeks, even on days when I post nothing WordPress sends me one of those messages to say traffic has increased and sure enough when I look at my numbers they have soared way beyond their normal numbers.
I tried looking in searches to see if something was driving traffic my way but nothing obvious showed up…strange.

I think I know what that is, too. Now that the pop-up window counts as a view, and obviously if they click on your site after seeing your post, or click the “Read full post…”, then you’re getting two views for the price of one. It’s more likely this will happen, obviously, if they can’t read your whole post in the pop-up window.

But there’s another problem with this theory, that was just pointed out to me by Rene. (http://nae50.wordpress.com/) The more people who change their reader view to summary, making the pop-up window give exactly the same info as the reader itself, (see the comment below this one) the more people who are going to get annoyed and not bother with the reader at all. It’s a lose/lose situation.

I have been trying to remember to click through on those. But what matters more to me is reader engagement. I’m trying to get brand exposure 🙂 Not sure the adjustments to the reader help bloggers much. So I’m not sure what the intention was behind this change.

Hello there and thanks for pointing this out! I did notice the pop up window recently, and thought it was kind of not a good idea. People don’t visit your blog, they can just read the post from that window, and also I didn’t know that wasn’t counted as a view. I will change my reading settings as well, thanks for the tips!
