Now that I have your attention, let’s conduct an experiment together!
Since I wrote my last article on how to get and keep followers on WordPress, I’ve been thinking a lot about what really gets a reader’s attention. Part of my musings are in light of a comment I received that many blogs attract their audience by being “acerbic, critical, cynical,” (thank you bethbyrnes) but I think that’s really only the half of it. Opinionated Man, for example, gets his following from not only writing excellent, easy to read posts, but he keeps his following by being friendly and generous with his advice. Despite what he might say about not expecting anyone to re-visit his sites here and at HarsH ReaLiTy, we do.
But what really grabs people’s attention in the first place? A little of it is site design (and that can work both ways – I rarely stay on a page that takes more than twenty seconds to load) but most of it is what immediately stands out – the post title and opening lines. Those are what people see in their reader, after all.
What sort of content attracts us? Certainly something that promises to be helpful. But human nature dictates most of what we will click on. These are the three things I narrowed it down to:
Kittens, car crashes, and nudity.
Sex has been used in advertising for around a century, according to Wikipedia. It’s almost everywhere, whether overt or subliminal. From experience I can say that erotica gets noticed.
Car crashes: rubbernecking is the number one reason for slow-downs on the highway. In the blogging world I would equate an auto accident to just about any sort of bad news that makes me think to myself, “It could happen to anyone, and that’s a scary thing,” or “I’d never do that! What were they thinking?!?” If you’re into that sort of thing–talking about the news, or just relating a story about what happened to yourself or someone you know (which is something I often do)–then you’ll probably find you received a fair bit of attention for it.
Kittens, as well as puppies and bunnies of course, are what the internet was made for, wasn’t it? 😉
I’m sure there are many more examples of things which gain plenty of attention: giveaways and contests; awards; rants; articles that deliberately make people angry or raise their eyebrows … care to add to the list?
Here’s your part in the experiment: I want you (yes, I’m looking at you) to write below in the comments, the title of your most popular post other than your about page. What was your opening sentence? Heck, go ahead and post a link to it. Let’s see what really gets the most attention, shall we?
This might be something we can all learn from! 😀

My most popular post was one of my Fellow Blogger posts – Pecora Nera from an Englishman in Italy followed closely by my post about Don Charisma.
The most popular post written by me was about me
http://suzjones.wordpress.com/2014/02/03/who-i-am/ and began “I’ve had a rough week….”
Definitely interesting.

My most viewed post was titled “Her side, His side” http://chocoquill.wordpress.com/2014/02/03/her-side-his-side/
The opening sentence was “I love having something sweet for breakfast”.
I think what also helped was a picture of two pink frosted cupcakes that went with the article. I mean, who doesn’t like cupcakes? Although I am a terrible photographer but it’s hard to mess up food 😉

Sex kind of sells, I’ve written a few explicit stories and actually, they didn’t rate as well as some things, I’m a pervert and have no shame, more modest people might do. I used to do very well when I wrote funny stories, stories about my clients (with little actual sex), but I think here on WP I am a bit of a niche and I don’t stay on topic. Those things are key, wide appeal, staying true to a theme, people are creatures of habit and that’s a key there, also, keep it short, and include a pic of a kitten if possible 😉

I think when going off on tangents it’s important to still stick with what you know. People aren’t going to read parenting advice from someone with no kids.
Sex kittens? That might work. 😛

Hmn.. you made me think. My top post was when I actually wrote something….but its not something I really want to do. To be frank, I got into wordpress blog as a means to feed my my jewelry store’s Facebook page which got started because Etsy wanted its Sellers to use Facebook as a means for marketing. I also wanted it as an outlet for my fascination with j-rock band Buck Tick but since I became part of the admin for WonderUnderground, B-T unofficial Street Team’s facebook page, a page devoted to Buck Tick, I no longer needed my wordpress blog for that. I guess I continue with my wordpress blog now because its much easier to use then Facebook and it does direct my Followers on Etsy, and other market venues to my Store’s Facebook page and basically to have activity on my Store’s Facebook. 🙂
I don’t know if I am really ready to share my thoughts and actually write posts on my blog 😀

Buck-Tick is certainly a worthy cause!!! But if advertising is your thing then most definitely, you’re doing it right. WordPress is great in that it allows for pictures AND for many more words and explanation to be written than on other media sources – and it has the handy built-in auto posting, as you say.
Keep up the good work! 😀

Awesome that we agree on Buck Tick! 😀
And yeah, WordPress is indeed great for automatic cross posting. Since starting Facebook and WordPress blog, I think I am reaching my target audience/market for I have seen my last season’s sales increase by at least 30%, so yep, I am quite happy. Thanks! 🙂

Well my ‘Art Work’ page has the most view but the next highest was “Santa Claus is Dead” http://butterflysand.com/2013/12/22/santa-claus-is-dead/
When Sebastian Phillips finished writing that phrase on his bulletin board he turned around to see what the reaction had been on his students. He was not disappointed.

An interesting examination, Linda.
My ‘most viewed’ post- this one: http://colemining.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/cleansing-the-palate/
wasn’t the post that received the most comments or ‘likes’. Since many of my posts can probably be classified as ‘rants’- and this one is no exception- I’d imagine that has something to do with the attention.
The results should be illuminating. I’ve read so many things about attracting traffic, but have to admit that I haven’t really taken much of it on board. I write what I feel and hope that it resonates with someone.

When it comes down to it, really all we can do is write what affects us personally. What we can do is try to make the title and first lines appealing enough that everyone wants to click on it, so that we can find the people it resonates with. Right? 😛
But yeah, rants are almost always fun. 😀

Let’s see… My most viewed post is about a trip to the grocery store, https://lindaghill.wordpress.com/2013/06/26/fiction-is-funnier/ in which the first line was “An encounter this morning with a cashier at the grocery store left me wondering what planet I’m living on.” But that one was kinda cheating because OM re-blogged it because he thought it was funny.
The most popular one I did by myself with no help was https://lindaghill.wordpress.com/2013/11/08/getting-views-is-like-pulling-teeth/ with the first line: “Has anyone else noticed that their view count has gone down? ”
Talking about WordPress on WordPress is pretty much a post in the bag. 😛
