True then, truer now

WordPress won’t let me reblog my own post from nine (9!) years ago, so I copied and pasted it below.

Trump

I feel nauseous just typing the name. But I’ve stayed quiet long enough. I find I have no choice but to speak out. Why, you ask? I realize the chances of changing the mind of anyone who is determined to put him in office is slim to none. But there are people out there whose voices might be heard. My ultimate plea is to those who can make a difference. Also, I feel by not saying anything, my silence in a way condones the possibility that my children and grandchildren will live in a far less free world than I have enjoyed.

I am Canadian. Let’s get that out of the way right now. I have no say in who becomes President of the United States. That is up to the conscience of the society south of my home’s border. But the fact is, the fateful decision to elect this man President will not affect only those within the U.S.’s borders. It will affect the entire world. Today’s events in Brussels and his reaction to them have magnified that.

Today he said he would close the borders; one assumes he means if he was in charge. On the surface, keeping outsiders out is a simple solution to a complex issue. Yet his talk of walls creates fear and encourages bigotry far more than it serves to protect. I know there are legitimate fears. But how do we fight fear? By being brave and standing together. Not building walls and hiding within them, never letting anyone else in.  Just hours ago, he tweeted, “Time & time again I have been right about terrorism. It’s time to get tough! ” When he claims he will torture and kill the families of terrorists, and when he talks about waterboarding, he sanctions the very same methods of terror that the terrorists are using: violence to get a point across. He is attempting to turn America into a personification of himself: a cowardly, narcissistic little man who acts with great bravado until he is told he’s wrong. Then he lashes out. A true narcissist has no compassion. Anyone who stands in his way, whether they are Muslim, Canadian, or American, will be crushed. A true narcissist thinks the only thing that is “great” is himself. Make America great again, indeed.

The history books are filled with the results of propaganda such as that he spews, but again and again we forget history. Or we ignore it. And again and again we repeat it.  In the next few days I will be writing a book review of Ken Follett’s “Century” trilogy. I was never big into history myself – I’d never go out of my way to learn it. But what I have learned by reading this historical fiction chills me to the bone. The parallels between the social unrest and widespread poverty in Germany leading up to the ELECTION of Hitler are, well, enough to make me come out of the political closet and write this article.

Today, while the present leaders of the world are pulling together their populations, and saying that while they will fight such terror as was perpetuated in Brussels, and earlier in Turkey and France among so may other places, they are also telling us not to allow the terrorists to bring us over to the side of hate. They are saying we need to look beyond the colour of our skin and our religious beliefs, and stand together regardless of our nationalities. The alternative is to fear those who are different, and build walls to keep them out.

Hatred begets hatred: two negatives do not make a positive. We teach our children this. Can we learn it ourselves? I hope we can, before it’s too late.

Trump is an arrogant and vile dispicable man, who only cares about $$ and himself and his buddies. He doesn’t care about the ordinary every day person walking the streets, you and me, for example, he is only out for himself and his billionaire friends. Sickens me!

This is such a well-written, relevant post, Linda. These days, there seems to be no difference between those suppposedly fighting terrorism and those sponsoring it. Both are terrorising the common man. Everyday, news channels show us that it’s the age of the bully. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Wow! Linda, what an awesome post!! I so loved it!! You are right about changing people’s minds. People vote their values so unless they see the folly of the values they currently hold there’s not much hope to change there minds and votes! According to a quote for Vice-President J.D. Vance – he described Trump in the past as – “Trump IS AMERICA’S HITLER!!!” it is so true. He was wanting to take over Canada as a Security issue for America. That is right out of Hitler’s playbook for Poland in WWII.I’m still worrying about whether Americans will get a chance to vote in a fair election in 2026. We had been thinking about maybe having to move to the north of Vancouver Island in B.C. but that was before Trump turned us into something less than the good friends to Canada that we used to be.Just be sure to support those who are defending your rights and country!!! From Trump!!! Only a FOOL would even think what Trump has been spouting. Thanks so much for this repost. Don’t take in too much News, it’s depressing. You should be able to use the duplicate choice when you look at Posts on the Dashboard. You can schedule the time and date with that. Another choice if you want to post an old post on the current day you can install the PRESS THIS and have an old post reposted that day. I like Press This better than trying to reblog. I don’t use Reblog anymore.Chuck😁👍✨💕🌹

Thanks for the WordPress advice, Chuck! I’ll try that next time.
Honestly, we up here wouldn’t hold it against you for wanting to escape the madness south of the border. And yeah, we’ve got a federal election coming up. I’ll be very vocal about not voting for the Conservatives!

Well, you are very wise to closely vet who you vote for. Down here we had half the voters voting for the Liar-and-Chief. They deluded themselves into believing everything they heard without requiring proof. They don’t believe the experts on anything – like tariffs. They are taxes on consumers.

The Vice President previously called Trump – Americans Hitler! He is proving that true by wanting to do what Hitler did – take over other countries land and government. I’ll be praying for you and your country to stand strong against U.S. crazy type politics and ideas and hope you get a government that cares about the middle and working class.

It is difficult to fight brainwash brainwashing and mob mentalty. The same in my country. Such people come into power again and again. It is hard to understand that.

Ah, the good old days from nine years ago when there were still Republicans in Congress who didn’t lick his boots (albeit not enough) and there were guardrails in place to slow down the worst of his instincts.

Now, nine years later there are no Republicans who dare oppose him and no effective guardrails to constrain him. Plus this time around there is the human wildcard, Elon Musk, who is indiscriminately taking a hacksaw to the federal government.

The 250-year-old American democracy has collapsed in less than 70 days, and the whole world is paying the price.

It is chilling that the chaos that was Trump 1.0 is mild compared to the dangerous insanity that is 2.0. Based on the idiocy of 1.0, the sane among us could and did predict horrible things if 2.0 happened. Listening to him campaigning this time around, and who he surrounded himself with, you could predict. I don’t think any person on the planet could have predicted JUST how awful it was going to be. How illegal things were going to be allowed to continue. That our system of checks and balances are so apparently broken…

The world is madness. The far right isn’t just here in the USA either. We’re just currently doing it louder, crazier, more shockingly based on who we were versus who we are now. Daily the world is subjected to the outrageous behavior he extends to other nations. Just the other day he basically told the PM of UK to shut up and stop talking because the UK was saying Canada is a good guy… I can’t even…

I want out of here. I’ve begun the immigration process to the UK. Who knows how that is going to end up. Pretty soon we’re going to be declared a terrorist nation by our former allies.

Meanwhile: Once again, apologies to the World. Apologies to our former bff, Canada.

Just reading his name makes me nauseous! I am American and will never understand how such a cutthroat, chameleon, charlatan, bigoted, racist, narrow-minded, evil person was ever elected to represent this country. I am so sorry for us and the rest of the world! 😢

I’m fully convinced it’s the echo chamber the conservatives live in that convinced them to vote for him. It’s the same everywhere, here included. I don’t know what to do aside from being as vocal as I can whenever I have the opportunity.

I am just petrified about what could happen to us. The whole Social Security thing…we’d be in real trouble here. And they call it “entitlements” like it’s a bad thing. I’m “entitled” to it BECAUSE I PUT INTO IT! Sorry, didn’t mean to shout. The problem is that if we get rid of him, we’ll be stuck with similar minded whackos.

I live in the U.S. I despise him. I despise him so much that everyday I look for the headline that he is working his way downward to the deepest level of Dante’s Inferno either by natural causes or by unnatural assistance.

I cannot understand how he is allowed to get away with what he’s doing now. As for the car salesman sidekick, I’m speechless. We have our own issues here in the UK and if you speak out, you could be in big trouble.

He is a hater of the worst kind and the other like minded haters will continue to multiply until it hits them hard which will probably be the case when they have to pay 200% more for milk, and beef. I’m embassed for our country. There will come a day when America will need world partners for help and they won’t take his call.
