“The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.”

— blogger Hart Helps, in blog post, Our Greatest Source of Unhappiness

“Oh wait, you asked me for the aspect [of writing] that interests me the most, right? That one is easy – I hang out with a really awesome bunch of imaginary friends almost all the time.”

— guest author Krishna Udayshankar, on Damyanti’s Daily (w)rite blog post, Have you read the Indian Game of Thrones?

“When we throw out or otherwise get rid of things we don’t need in our lives, it not only creates physical space for us to live, but it relieves the untidiness it occupies in our minds.”

Years ago, when the girls were in first and second grade, we sat in the food court of the PX (Post Exchange) and Sassy said she wanted to go get a drink refill, but she wanted to wait til this other kid wasn’t over there. I asked her why she didn’t want to be around him, and she told me, “That’s Eric. No one likes him.”
“Why not?”
“Cause he’s so weird. He’s always roaming around the classroom, talkin to himself. He wears these patch things on his arm and they’re supposed to help him sit down and be quiet, but they don’t work.”

How I felt was monumentally affected. Sad for Eric is an understatement. Sad for his parents, too. Grievous might be the better word.
“Sassy. That could be a little version of your brother over there. He had the same troubles as Eric, only he didn’t roam…

10 Tips on Writing Fiction

While I’m on the subject of writing today, here’s an excellent list of things to remember when writing fiction. Enjoy!

ValerieThomas's avatarValerie Thomas, Author

Disclaimer: I am completely unqualified to write this. Under my own name, I’ve written one flash fiction and one novel (that isn’t even out yet). That being said, here are my own ten rules for writing (plus one bonus rule).

  1. Your first draft is never good. “But, what if—?” No, it’s not. I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to edit.
  2. For every writing “rule” that’s been concocted, there is a successful author who violated it. This does not mean that author is you, and you would do well to heed those rules anyway.
  3. The value of words is extrinsic. Unless they tell an interesting story or make a good point, no one will care.
  4. Write the genres and subjects you enjoy reading, because a lot of the time you will be the only audience to your work. Also, if you don’t enjoy what you’re writing, odds are that will…

Want a good laugh? Read this. It’s hilarious. 😀

Carol: Oh Andy, how could you do this to me?!

Andy: What are you talking about, darling?  I haven’t done anything!

Carol: Why must you turn this house into a den of lies!  Just confess your wicked ways already!

Andy: Carol, honey.  I’ve done nothing wrong!

Carol: Again with your lies.  I can’t stand it anymore!  I saw the marks on your neck!

Andy: <feels his neck, a shocked look on his face>  It’s…it’s not what it looks like.  Honest, Carol.

Carol: Who was it?  Jessica?  Hannah?  Patricia?  Who stole your heart away from me!

Andy: I…I can’t say.  You don’t want to know the truth.  You just don’t.

Carol: I deserve to know the truth!  After all we’ve been through, I at least get that!

Andy: Yes.  Yes, you’re right.  I can’t hold it back anymore.  It’s just…too hard.  I am seeing someone else.

Carol: I knew it!  Who…

Copyright Infringement: A Warning to all Authors

Attention writers AND readers. If your book is on this site, ask them to take it down. If you decide to grab a free ebook, beware of viruses. This site is giving away books without the authors’ permissions!

Tim Baker's avatarblindoggbooks

I would like to share a letter sent to me by a fellow independent author, who wishes to remain anonymous, about a website claiming to be promoting independent authors, when in reality it appears that they are offering free downloads of the work of dozens of us.

If you are an author, independent or otherwise, I urge you to read this letter and investigate the site yourself. Find out if your work is posted there and take appropriate action to have it removed, or, at the very least, make sure you are willing to grant permission to the site owners to list your work.

Making money as an independent author is difficult enough without pirating sites giving our work away under false pretenses AND without our permission.

Please share, tweet or reblog this post in order to spread the word through the independent author community and, hopefully, put some pressure…

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – As an aside

As an aside – isn’t that just another way to say I’m planning to digress from my original thought?

And what is an original thought. No such thing.

But we all have to start somewhere. We have a thought and we run with it, do we not? Sometimes that thought becomes something that others find interesting and then at other times our audience will begin to struggle to pay attention. If we’re in a social setting they will act restless, which is a sign to either shut up or change the subject – or get back on it.

Does this post have a subject?

As an aside, my mother’s dog died. Oh this was years and years ago. Maybe around 1988. She phoned me to tell me but I was at a party at the time, and didn’t have the time or the concentration to really pay attention to what she was saying. And so I hung up after saying that I was sorry, and I’d call her back the next day. Which I did. And then I visited her and consoled her over the loss of her dog.

Where was I?

Oh yes. We were talking about “asides.” At least I was. Are you still following me?

I thought not.
