Every once in a while I feel the need to reach out to my fellow writers, and I consider it a gift to have, here at WordPress, so many friends who are sailing along with me in this boat. Up until I began my blog, writing was a solitary endeavour if ever there was one.
So, I’m here once again to see if anyone else out there shares my experience.
Inspiration comes to me from everywhere: from an unusual sight; from people I see when I’m out; from music, art… you name it. But only once in my life have I found someone who could inspire me to write an entire novel. His face, his movements, his physique, his voice – there is nothing about him which doesn’t inspire me. And without fail, every time I see him I am compelled to write the character I have found through him.
I can’t imagine I’m the only one who has felt this seemingly unlimited amount of inspiration from a single person or thing.
So tell me. What has been your boundless inspiration in the past? What, or who, is responsible for giving you the excitement necessary to write tirelessly, and on occasion, effortlessly?

I find I source my inspiration from my past and present. I write from I know. I envy you having an actual live muse. 😉

It seems that maybe it is a rare thing, to have a live muse. According to the comments I’ve had so far at least. Thanks for sharing your experience 🙂

I like these posts, Linda. I love the way you write about your own muse, and you are lucky to have found him! Like a lot of people, I find inspiration from little things that strike me throughout my day — at work, at home, traveling. Often, I’ll embellish/or nearly completely rework an experience I had (like my story about hearing the musician in the trailer park with my wife) in order to explore an idea further in my mind.

Thanks Ian. 🙂 It’s the best feeling when you can let an inspiration just go, and see where it takes you, isn’t it?

My muses switch hats frequently – I’m inspired by a variety of people, places and objects –

So, there’s nothing that has really taken hold of you for a length of time? Or is that just a common occurrence?

Nope! 😀 I’m a generalist in the age of specialists – a butterfly flitting from one grand idea to another – – hence, multiple manuscripts in varied stages of being completed! 😀
The only topic that keeps me engaged continually (and most likely forever) is the depth of human complexity and spirit – and the systems we create that allow us to aspire to our highest ideals or engage in the worst depravities – –
This ‘inspiration’ however, is so broadly defined and applied, I manage to hold true to it no matter what current interest I’m engaging in.

That’s the important thing, isn’t it? Keeping it truthful. The human mind inspires me to no end. In believing as I do that there’s no such thing as pure evil, sickness is an unending source of character possibilities and conflict.

Wow tough question. My muse, if you will, was and is my Mother. When she was ill I stopped writing. When she died I didn’t think I would write again. Since starting to write this blog my Mother sits on my shoulder as I write. Nodding and tsking! I love it!

Nearly everything inspires me, but it’s best I don’t write about them all 😉
