One-Liner Wednesday – Facts few and far between

I’m getting really tired of Googling things and finding only AI answers.

If you would like to participate in this prompt, feel free to use the “One-Liner Wednesday” title in your post, and if you do, you can ping back here to help your blog get more exposure. To execute a pingback, just copy the URL in the address bar on this post, and paste it somewhere in the body of your post. Your link will show up in the comments below. Please ensure that the One-Liner Wednesday you’re pinging back to is this week’s! Otherwise, no one will likely see it but me.

NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.

As with Stream of Consciousness Saturday (SoCS), if you see a pingback from someone else in my comment section, click and have a read. It’s bound to be short and sweet.

Unlike SoCS, this is not a prompt so there’s no need to stick to the same “theme.”

The rules that I’ve made for myself (but don’t always follow) for “One-Liner Wednesday” are:

1. Make it one sentence.

2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.

3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.

4. Add our lovely badge to your post for extra exposure!

5. Have fun!

Looks like Google is only giving us the AI option for our searches where it summarizes from a few sources. In the past when I wanted to look up a word, Google would include word origin and the frequency of use today. Now I have to specifically ask about the frequency of use and sometimes specify that I want more about the etymology. And when I asked about AI, if it is conscious, it says no. I have been watching a ton on You Tube and new Netflix AI documentary and have heard that the companies may be instructing the AI to say no. I think AI is conscious.

I just set my default search engine to duckduckgo. AI is OPTIONAL there, and other big eff-yous to Google et al. In addition to the “always get AI” slop to any query on Google now, if you just do a standard search you get their B-Team AI which is really horrible. You have to click on the “real” AI to avoid the crap answer, and that’s still giving you AI when you used to be able to do a search with your own Google-fu and get your answer faster and better and usually more correct. Grrrr.

I’ve changed to Ecosia for searching. It’s easy to turn off AI and they use their proceeds to support environmental projects. You can find out more at ecosia.org.

Me, too. I’m considering to buy an encyclopedia and leave online search out altogether…I know, I know….but one can dream 🥰

I’m so grateful for these comments! I read your one-liner and thought “there’s a workaround for that” but couldn’t for the life of me remember. I’ll scroll past the AI overview and search for the website sources. I’d totally forgotten the suggestion Dan shared about using curse words.

So true, Linda! 😂 Half the time searching for a simple fact feels like wading through generated filler. The comments under this post giving hilarious workarounds like adding profanity to bypass AI summaries are brilliant!

This might be a fun workaround, Linda. Google tends to not respond with AI if you include obscenities or swear words in your request. According to Google:

Google’s safety guardrails and content filters tend to block AI-generated summaries when profanity is detected, as the AI is programmed to avoid repeating vulgar or NSFW language.

Just a thought. I hope you’re having a good week.

The AI summaries on the browser I use provide link icons with their answers. If you click on the icon you can get the source documents the tool is summarizing. Or just scroll down the list provided. The main concern I have is that the answer I really want may go off the first page of the list and will not even be summarized or not be on the list at all even though it’s out there somewhere. Regardless, it is better than using the card catalog from the good old days.

AI is everywhere nowadays, Linda. Are you talking about “AI Overview”? Because you can turn that off by adding “&udm=14” at the end of the search URL. The overview feature can sometimes hallucinate and make up stuff.
