I went for my weekly trip to the grocery store this morning and forgot half of what I went for.
Why, you ask?
I’ll tell you.
I was about two-thirds of my way through my shopping when a woman told me they had Lysol Wipes on the shelf.
“Oooh,” I said, and promptly looked for the aisle. But I was at the wrong end of a one-way “street” now that they have arrows on the floor for social distancing. So, being the good girl I am, I went down the adjacent aisle so I could come back the other way.
I turned up the correct aisle, and as you can imagine, I was shocked to find an older woman with a cart coming the other way. The wrong way.
“I know I’m going the wrong way,” she said, “but they have Lysol Wipes, and you don’t see those very often.”
She reached them just ahead of me so I waited while she plucked one off the shelf and put it in her cart.
“I’ll get out of your way,” she said and turned to go.
I got to the spot where she’d turned around. She’d taken the last one.
That’ll teach me not to follow the rules.
Nice guys always finish last, don’t they?
And so yeah, I forgot half of what I went for because after that I was distracted by the voice in my head chanting BITCH!
Because if you’re like me and stuck at home already, or if you’re going to be like me soon, the days of the week are hell to keep track of. We have a wonderful community here on WordPress and all over the Internet as well, and I’m sure many people are feeling nervous and/or isolated. I want to make sure every one of us has somewhere to congregate and someone to talk to.

Even our walk didn’t help with the pain like it usually does.
I got a picture of the tree that fell. If you zoom in, you’ll see where the yellow tape ends, that’s where the top of the tree is. I’m glad it didn’t land on anything but the ground.
And here are some caged flowers I found.
I took that last picture just before Alex and I were almost run over by a man on a bike. On the sidewalk. A man who decided, unlike the woman he was riding with, to take the sidewalk instead of the bike lane on the road.

We went for a lovely walk today in the cool spring breeze. They were calling for thunder storms last night after yesterday’s 100 degree humidity. That’s possibly when this happened at the park.
The tree that fell has to be 40′ tall. At least. Someone’s going to be set for firewood this winter.
Also, the peonies are blooming.
Pretty and pink. This is the neighbour’s plant. Winston killed mine.
Yesterday:
I got a call from a very helpful lady who wanted to rid me of the hacker who has infected my computer. She started by asking if I was on the computer. I said yes, and then I went through a few scenarios in my head: how could I waste this helpful woman’s time? Act dumb, of course.
Her: What are you doing on the computer?
Me: (very slowly) Playing a game. (I sounded a bit like Eeyore.)
Her: On the very bottom left-hand corner of your keyboard, what do you see?
Me: A button.
Her: What does that button say?
Me: C T R L
I won’t take you through the entire thing because I don’t want to waste your time, but she got me into the Window’s command one letter at a time (C as in charlie, etc.) while I “searched” for the right letter on the keyboard until I had “netstat” typed in. “Netstat” is what tells you what you have running on your computer at any moment. Hackers ask you to do this, assuming you’ll have no idea what you’re looking at, and tell you it’s proof that someone is hacking your computer just so they can do it themselves. Just as I got to this point, I hung up on her without a word.
A minute later she called back. I let it ring a few times before I answered.
Her: We got cut off, sorry. Are you on the computer?
Me: Yes.
Her: What are you doing?
Me: Playing a game.
I made her go through the entire thing again and hung up on her at the same time. It took a good five to ten minutes for each call.
Since then, though I haven’t answered, they’ve called me back 25 times using at least fifteen different spoofed numbers.
Insidious. I’m thinking about answering the phone and accusing her of stealing my car or something equally absurd.

I’m not a fan of the humidity, but I don’t mind a hot dry day with a cool breeze, and that’s what we got this morning. Alex and I went out for a walk around the block and found a cute little bun.
I didn’t get too close, because I didn’t want to miss the shot. Do you see him, sitting between the sidewalk and the pine tree?
We had a nasty storm this afternoon, but as I sit here in my room, writing this post, the moon is huge outside my window. Very low in the sky. I think it was supposed to be full last night, but it looks pretty full to me now.
I’m a fan of the moon.
I love the moon.
Have I mentioned I’m a fan of a Japanese band named Buck-Tick?
I must have.
I’ve gone all the way to Japan just to see them in concert.
It’s been a while since I shared a song of theirs, so here’s one.
The artwork projected on the back of the stage is amazing. The audience of thousands was, I’m sure, stunned into silence at the end of the song. I’ve seen Buck-Tick do this live–stun the audience into not being able to clap. They’re that good.
You might want to read the lyrics in English if you don’t understand Japanese or Spanish. Here they are, courtesy of the amazing translation skills of Cayce at NotGreatestSite. Night of Guernica
Lyrics: Sakurai Atsushi
Music: Imai Hisashi
I gather up the stardust in my hands
Off into town, to the corner cinema
Just my beloved elder brother and I
Gazing up rapt at the night screen
I wanted sweets, but knew there would be none
Just one stick of gum for us to share
If Mama had come along with us too
I would have liked to sit on her knee
Suddenly the heavens rage flames and thunder1
Suddenly we disappear and are gone
Oh please don’t let me go
I’ll be torn apart
I won’t cry, I won’t tell lies anymore
Oh God have mercy on us
I’m begging please
Why, oh why? Why, oh why?
Please hear my prayer
Ah, no longer can I dance anymore
Marionette with my strings all cut down
Ah, no longer can I smile anymore
Marionette with my head cut away
I scrape the stardust up off the ground
Into a shape I could name Love2
You drip, you fall, you overflow on me3
Forgive me, onto you now I rain down
As you stared into the night’s black reaches
You were lost, you were not you anymore
Oh please don’t let me go
I’ll be torn apart
I won’t cry, I won’t tell lies anymore
Oh God have mercy on us
I’m begging please
Why, oh why? Why, oh why?
Please hear my prayer
Your body blows away
Scattered to the winds
All of the ones I loved
Carrying away4
Oh oh my city lies
In flames my friend5
How I love you how I love you
This is goodbye
And who am I to say?
And what should I do?
I who sing songs of love and romance to you
And how about you all?
How do you feel?
Someone is killing someone else even now
Your body blows away
Scattered to the winds
All of the ones I loved
Carrying away
Oh oh my city lies
In flames my friend
How I love you how I love you
This is goodbye
That was the dream I had, and then I woke up
I want to go home now, as fast as I can
I want to see Mama now, as soon as I can
(A note should be made that Sakurai, the singer and lyricist, lost his mother in his twenties. A tragedy he’s never truly recovered from.)

I started off my day with my coffee maker pot somehow in the wrong spot and an entire cup of coffee on the counter and the floor. I really hate it when that happens.
No walk today since it’s getting hot out again. I wouldn’t mind going anyway, but Alex has a hard time breathing in the heat. So we’ll stay home and I’ll try to get some editing work done on my next book.
I’m procrastinating as we speak.
It’s not going well.
Yesterday:
We did manage to get out for a walk yesterday. I found some more painted stones.

Alex and I got out for a walk today. Three days in a row now with no rain and no extreme heat! In fact, we needed sweaters. Crazy weather, but that’s Canada for you.
As we walked past the park today, I found some painted rocks.
Love
Peace
There’s a lot of love still to be discovered
What a lovely message of hope they were.
Then for supper, one of the ladies who worked with my son, Chris, at the high school and now works with disabled kids at Alex’s camp and his baseball club contacted me to ask me if it would be okay if her friend dropped off individual meals for Chris and Alex. I said sure! That happened today, making the kids very happy.
On a sad note, they officially canceled Alex’s camp for the summer. Baseball is out too, so it’s going to be a loooong three more months before school (maybe) starts in September.
Yesterday:
Last night, actually, I was late putting Alex to bed. He was in his room with his laptop at 12:05 when he started screaming. I ran in there to see what was wrong: he was pointing at the date. “It’s June 1st!” he signed.
Me: Yeah, it’s after midnight.
Alex: But it’s JUNE!!!
Me: (trying not to laugh) Yes, the date changes after midnight every day.
Alex: My mind is blown!
Apparently no one told him that the date changes before he wakes up in the morning. The little things you don’t think to teach your kids unless they ask …

Sorry I’ve been so scarce ’round here the past few days. They’ve been rough ones. But I’m sure you don’t need me splayin’ my woes on the screen …
I’ve been too tired to stay awake and too restless to go to sleep. Does that make sense? Maybe I need more naps.
We finally got out for a walk today. First time in a week. It’s downright cold tonight after the scorching heat we had on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It feels good to have cold feet again.
The poppies are growing nicely in the neighbour’s front yard.
I have to get up early and go to the grocery store tomorrow. I think even after all this worry is finished I may stick to going once a week. It’s making me more cautious about what I buy and saving me money, I think, in the long run. Plus, since I go so early in the morning, the only thing I’m craving is coffee, so the impulse buying is at a minimum.
There’s nothing more expensive than going shopping when you’re hungry, after all.

I woke up this morning convinced it was Saturday. Why? I have no idea.
In other news …
Alex and I went through our yearly battle of the fans. Aside from his fear of anyone in masks (Halloween, the school mascot, and even Santa are the worst), he has a fear of ceiling fans. I don’t know if he’s seen one fly off its moorings online or something, but we go through this every time it starts to get hot outside and I want to turn them on for the first time.
I get that he’s scared, and I think he actually gets that it’s irrational–I ask him, “Did it hurt you last year?” “No,” he says–but until I can convince him to just ignore it, he won’t let me leave it on.
So this morning I said fine. If he doesn’t want it on, I’ll take away the floor fan too.
Five minutes.
The ceiling fan is on for yet another summer.
Yesterday:
Yesterday, and today, and tomorrow, and until Saturday it’s going to be the same: work at home. Too hot to go out. High this afternoon, 33C, 40C with the humidity. (That’s 91F and 104F.)

Another weekend bites the dust. Tomorrow? It’ll feel like the weekend.
It’s about to get hot here, so I asked my best friend, John, to come over and put my A/C unit in the kitchen window. My brain doesn’t work in the humidity, so I really need it. That was the second time in two days I saw John, and yesterday was the first time in an age. Hanging out together is one of the casualties of this whole virus thing. Ah well. There’s the phone. He didn’t stay long today.
I went out for a walk by myself this afternoon, since Alex decided he wanted to be lazy.
I hung out with the geese. They don’t care about the virus.
Yesterday:
I sent a frantic text to John that read: Help! We’re trapped inside the house by murder hornets!
Okay, so they might not have been murder hornets, exactly, but I’m convinced they would have done away with me if I’d let them get close enough.
I saw three (count ’em: 3!!) of them through the window in the top of my wooden front door, between that and the screen door. There’s no way to get to the front of my house through the back door without hopping fences. So the only alternative was to be rescued from the outside. Ain’t no way I was opening the front door and letting them in the house.
The excitement never ends.
Anyway, I opened the door a crack and sprayed them, so by the time John got over to my place, they were dead. We still don’t know where they came from, but you can bet your booties I’ll be careful every time I open the door from now on.

Choices aren’t terribly abundant these days. There are few places most of us can choose to go, to buy, to eat … But the choices we do have are important ones. For some of us, they’re life and death.
I don’t want to get on a soapbox.
But there are so many people not taking Covid-19 seriously, and it saddens me greatly. People who think it will never happen to them, or worse, people who think it’s a conspiracy.
Thousands of people went out today in Toronto because the weather was nice.
In a week or two, we’ll be locked down again like it’s March all over again. Not that I’m planning to do anything differently than I am now anyway, but it’s going to suck for people who truly have difficulties with having to stay at home.
And, of course, it’s going to suck even more for those who die or lose someone.
Patience seems to be barely a thing any more. And I get it–no one wants this. No one wants the level of change we’re experiencing. But the less patient we are, the longer it will go on.
