Adventures on my Paper Route – Xs of Doom

One day last week, two of my neighbour’s trees were marked by the city with bright orange Xs.

X of doom

I’ve come to know these marks as the Xs of Doom. Within the next few weeks these trees will be drying in some lot, waiting to be bagged for firewood.

At least the one closest to the street is going out in a blaze of glory.

We protested, to the county – and saved a redwood. Now, our HOA wants it removed to help property drainage. Sigh. I hope something can be done to save more city trees!

There are so many mature trees in my neighbourhood, and admittedly some of them are at risk of falling. Most profound is the speed at which they come down, compared to how long it took them to grow. I think what we need to do is start planting now, before they thin them out too much.

Why are they chopping down so many trees?
