H is for … Horoscopes

Have you ever read a description of the characteristics of someone with your own star sign and said, “That’s ME!”? I have. I actually stood in a book store Astrology aisle for about half an hour, reading a book off the shelf with my mouth agape. At least I think I did – I remember distinctly being avoided by the other patrons of the store. Maybe they thought I’d bite them. According to this book I was reading, I might have. I enjoy doing things for the shock value, just like the book said.

Just imagine what kinds of quirks can be found for fictional characters from of one of these sometimes amazing, almost psychic books. Though it might not be a good idea to take every single characteristic from an astrological sign and use them all, a few here and there don’t hurt.

From http://zodiac-signs-astrology.com/zodiac-signs/aquarius.htm

Aquarius personality is very independent, any attempt to hold them down or restrict them will cause them, to flee. They need to be free to be on their own. Independence is not just desired by Aquarius, it is essential to their well being.

That would be me to a tee. So if I was to write myself into a fictional situation, my character would have a hard time accepting help, for example.

Do you know your character’s birthday? If so, have you checked with the zodiac to see what sort of person they are? If not, you might want to – or even pick a birthday for them even if it’s never mentioned in your story. One way or another, go buy an astrology book or find a website that describes YOU! If it does, it’s probably accurate for your characters too.

I’ve been a student of astrology since I picked up the first book around age 8. Aquarians are some of my favorite people. Right after Leos, and other Sagittarians.

I don’t blindly pick a birthday for my characters. I have an astrology book that I use to further develop my characters. Once I have an idea of their personality I pick a sign that meshes with it and then I narrow it down to the day from there. It is a little freaky how accurate they can be. Mine describes me to a tee too 🙂

Great idea to do it the other way around. I know when my character’s birthday is, and I’m having to round her out in a way I might not have otherwise. They can be scary accurate! 🙂

I like that idea. That’s looking at things a bit deeper. The best astrologer I have found (and who really hits the nail on the head some days) is http://www.cainer.com

Thanks! Knowing Herman’s birthday, I’m delving as we speak. I’m taking my own advice now, since I didn’t think of it before. 😛 This A-Z thing is turning out to be a huge learning experience!

I am an aquarian too – an astrologer once told me that apart from being born 50 years before my time – I also was lethal to electronics – If any go wrong in our house my husband always asks if I am wound up about anything. This does not bode well for 50 years ahead and new technology. Anyway, I read horoscopes a lot less than I used to when I was looking for Mr. Right – he came along and the only time I take a peek now is to see if there might be ‘cash coming your way’ rather than a tall dark handsome stranger. My husband is a Capricorn born the day before my father and his morphing into him…………….

Excellent idea for characters. Astrology is fascinating. Years and years ago, I used to do charts for my friends, and it was amazing how close the descriptions were for their personalities. I finally got tired of using all the special books for various years and times of birth and the math. Tarot is a good method, too. I used the witch’s cards for readings , again years and years ago. At one time, I fiddled with the idea of arranging students in groups according to their astrological signs and giving them special assignments designed for their personalities. It would have been interesting. Have fun with the signs.

That would have been a fascinating experiment! It’s too bad you didn’t get a chance to do it.

I do love astrology, as well as tarot. It gives the scientific part of my mind wings to fly into the mystical and the psychological at the same time.

Thanks very much for sharing, Professor. 🙂

I use tarot cards in a bit of the same way. It can really help when you don’t have a lot to go with for the character. Often times can even open up no possibilities.

I’ll keep in mind not to hold you down or restrain. That’s too bad. I love that stuff 😉
