According to WordPress, today is the official second anniversary of my blog. It’s the day, two years ago, when I decided to see what WordPress is all about. I wrote one post and promptly forgot about it for the next six months.
So this morning I decided to go back and take a look at it. At this moment it has three “likes” and no comments. But I’m okay with that – it’s nothing to write home about. Hell, it’s nothing to write WordPress about. It’s four sentences of basically question marks. It’s the same first post I see on many blogs, to varying degrees.
But let’s face it – this WordPress thing is a tough thing to get into at the start. None of us really knows what we’re doing, and most of us don’t understand what the follow/like/comment thing is all about. How many people here had no idea that there was such a wonderful community here? Come on, put up your hand if you’re one of us.
Once we’re in, and I mean REALLY in to this mode of communication, it’s astounding what it can do. We meet people with similar tastes, we share invaluable information with one another, and we find a place to sound off, to practice our craft, and to feel a part of something so large!
And it all started somewhere for each of us. When was the last time you read your very first post?

First of all: I put my hand up. For sure I did not know how amazing the community is on WordPress. As for reading my first blog post. I have no idea which one that is. It is very likely that it does not exist anymore. As I had several blogs that I have deleted. And I have so many of which most of them I do not write anymore. Never mind…. Thanks for your post

I set up my WordPress account, blog name and all that, and THEN left it for several months without a real first post. Several months later, I started on a twice a week schedule. That first post was in November of 2012, and to be honest, I’ve never gone back and read it. Might have to do that real soon. 🙂 Happy Anniversary!

Thanks, Deborah! 🙂 It’ll be interesting to see whether you feel as though you’ve come very far in the last almost two years. 🙂

I do know that I was trying too hard in the beginning to create a specific type of blog, and as a result, my writing felt stilted in the beginning. I’m much happier now with my “voice.” I suspect that’s part of the reason why I haven’t intentionally gone back to look, but I think it’s time. Maybe I can even give those first posts a face lift and take them to another level. We shall see. It was certainly an interesting question to raise.
This SofCS thing is really getting a lot of people thinking, writing, and sharing. I’m so glad you started this challenge. 🙂

Thank you , Deborah. 🙂 I do love it when I see people sharing their thoughts! 😀
I really think that’s just the thing – finding our individual voice. Once we have that, it becomes much easier.

So, technically, you might want to put a reminder in your calendar to mark the real start of your blogging experience? So glad to have virtually met you, and congrats on persevering.

Happy to have met you too, Amanda 🙂 I did acknowledge my real blogoversary in January this year. It’s also when I paid for my site, so I’m sure WP will remind me with a bill. Haha. 🙂

Me too – a year and a half of active blogging. It seems to be when a lot of people started. Thanks very much, KG. 🙂

Thanks, John. 🙂 I think most people who have been around for a while will find their first post a little cringe-worthy. A year and a half is how long I’ve been actively blogging too. Almost exactly in fact. Fun, isn’t it? 🙂

I know what you mean, I did the same thing in terms of writing a first post and then forgetting it for quite some time. Only I didn’t do that here; I’d first tried using Blogger but didn’t love it. This was years ago, although I reread that first post a couple of months ago (and it was quite weak!). When I decided to blog again, I went with WordPress because I’d heard so many good thing about it — and I’m so glad I did! You’re so right about the community here. Then, people like you make it even better; I look forward to SOCS every week now and love the blogs and people I learn about through it! Great post and prompt this week.

Yeah, I’ve heard the other blog sites don’t have as much of a sense of community as WordPress. I’m lucky to have come here first. 😀

Of course, becuase you asked, I had to go and read it before I commented. It is a bit clueless, but not quite as bad as I remembered it. Of course, I may also be the only person who has ever read it!
What surprised me is that I did actually create another post that first month. I am still in my first year of my blog and didn’t really start working on commenting and trying to participate in the community until a few months ago, when I figured I had gained enough experience writing posts that I would be able to keep the blog going.
I want to thank you, Linda, for the opportunity for One-Liner Wednesday and SoCS. It has really helped me to connect with other bloggers to follow and I’m thrilled that some are following me now.

Yes, my first post is pretty clueless too – great way to put it. 😀

Happy Anniversary and congratulations on two years! I remember my first post well, since it was only a little over two months ago. The thing I remember most was sitting here with my cursor hovering over the publish button and freaking out. I asked my boyfriend at least three times, “Should I do it?”
I’m so happy I did. I have found an amazing community in WordPress and have learned so much, even in just a few short months. 🙂

I am going through all of the posts now and I am a bit astounded as to how similar they are…there is a common theme to most I’ve read so far. I didn’t read any before I wrote my post this morning…

I’m fairly very new and two years seems like such a long time but the wordpress family makes me feel so welcome and good, true like a family at times they advise and at times shower words of praise 🙂
Supremely glad to have found your blog!
