It was 2009 and I’d already decided to buy my house. During the inspection, the real estate agent and I were poking around in all the nooks and crannies when we discovered that the inside of one of the closet doors had been used, for decades, as a place to record the growth of the children who grew up here. Click on the pictures for a closer look.
- Some of the dates go back to before I was born
- This is the oldest one I found. Judging by height, “Peri” was a baby.
- Of course, I had to add my own.
It’s fun to find history displayed in public places. It’s even better when you come across it in your own home.

Great I was thinking though of your height on the door!

Haha. No, I haven’t. I’m afraid it would show how I’m shrinking with old age.

And what a story they tell. I loved this Linda. An excellent original take on the theme.
I always say that a ‘House’ is just a building, a structure, but stuff like this is what makes it a ‘Home’ 🙂

That’s so charming. My mother used to etch heights into a door frame. I wish I could go back to that house now and remember how little we all were, but she sold it a long time ago.

Makes you wonder whether the new owners continued it, doesn’t it?

I’d like to think that, but the house was bought by an investor who rented it out (it was part of a parcel with a separate 4-unit apartment building, so it did make some sense). Possibly one of the tenants might have used that same marking scale for their children.

Great doors. I have an old friend who is selling his house but he’s taking that door with him.

A very original door contribution. 🙂 Our family had a similar door frame for a similar purpose.

It’s kind of sad that they’re permanent fixtures, isn’t it? If you move, you leave it behind.
Thanks for dropping by! 🙂

Thank you for dropping by first. My parents still live in the house with the same kitchen door frame, just the marks are gone. Without grandchildren there is nothing to measure. Dogs stay mostly the same and don’t care. 🙂
