This post is part of Just Jot it January, and today’s prompt comes to us courtesy of Kim. Check out her blog here!
Some family members you can happily live with, some not so much.
But I don’t think you’ll disagree that there are some family members none of us want to live with: the members of the rodent family.
True story that happened many years ago:
I walked into my kitchen one morning in time to see a mouse run under my stove. I shrieked, not because I’m afraid of mice, but because it startled me. I immediately got down on my hands and knees to look for the little critter, but there was no sign of it. I pulled out the drawer under the stove—nothing. It had disappeared.
But there were droppings. Lots of droppings.
I had someone pull the stove out from the wall to see if there was a hole it could have gotten through, but nothing was obvious. The next step was to take the side panels off the stove. Sure enough, there were more droppings in the insulation between the outside and inside walls of my oven. They’d built a nest. In my stove.
So I sold the house.
…
…
Okay, the family of mice might not have been the entire reason I sold the house, but I never cooked in the oven again—I didn’t want to bake the little buggers alive!—and the oven stayed in the house when I moved.
I did leave a note for the new owners.
It went something like:
The stove is yours, but not yours alone …

OMG! I’d freak out if a mouse got in my oven! No thanks! I can see why you sold that house!

I’m not that bad with mice. It’s the spiders that make me want to burn the house down for a more immediate effect. Haha!

Thanks for the hearty laugh! We live in the country, and we used to have mice, even though we’ve always had cats. Then I read that mint repels them, and I spread mint all over the house, and (knock wood) so far, so good! Other people haven’t had so complete an effect, so I can’t swear by it.

Umm I had to laugh at the story but it’s the 29th today. At least in my part of the world it is. We kept hearing noises behind our dishwasher – a cricket had got stuck in a hole in the wall!

Doh! I messed up the date. It should have been the 29th. Crickets are soooo annoying when they get inside. It’s amazing how loud they really are.

I love that note, Linda. We did battle with mice here one year. I plugged every hole I could find. We haven’t seen them since, and that was a few years ago.

Omg, Linda! This post had me rolling on the floor! A similar thing happened to us in our first little rent house. The rats had been living in the stove which the owners did NOT disclose, we never used it. We had to cook everything in the microwave or toaster oven, and we had a toddler! Ugh. I totally feel ya on this one!

Why didn’t you just get rid of the stove?
