There are times when Word makes really bad grammar suggestions.

Photo: A screenshot of a quote from one of my books “This changes things.” Word doesn’t like it and suggests I change it to either “This changes thing,” or “These changes things.” What the heck, Word?
If you would like to participate in this prompt, feel free to use the “One-Liner Wednesday” title in your post, and if you do, you can ping back here to help your blog get more exposure. To execute a pingback, just copy the URL in the address bar on this post, and paste it somewhere in the body of your post. Your link will show up in the comments below. Please ensure that the One-Liner Wednesday you’re pinging back to is this week’s! Otherwise, no one will likely see it but me.
NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.
As with Stream of Consciousness Saturday (SoCS), if you see a pingback from someone else in my comment section, click and have a read. It’s bound to be short and sweet.
Unlike SoCS, this is not a prompt so there’s no need to stick to the same “theme.”
The rules that I’ve made for myself (but don’t always follow) for “One-Liner Wednesday” are:
1. Make it one sentence.
2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.
3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.
4. Add our lovely badge to your post for extra exposure!
5. Have fun!

Auto correct and these grammar checks try to mess with us at times, I think. They have an awful sense of humor (or they are drunk…not sure)

For those of us with dyslexia or other reading/writing issues grammar checks complicate everything. I know I can’t rely on them. My best writing happens when I read my stuff out loud. IA has no personality or care for authors.

Indeed it doesn’t. When I proofread, I use Words “read aloud” tool and read along as I listen. It helps a lot!

I’ve used that, too.

Word was having an off day. Maybe they were thinking of “Thing” from the Adam’s Family.

Did it offer to rewrite that for you with CoPilot?
I get those offers so often, I’m tempted to see what it might come up with, but I’m afraid it will leave some lingering crumbs in the document.

Nah, this was just me clicking on the sentence because Word underlined it as being wrong. I have my automatic updates turned off on Word, so I don’t have CoPilot. Yet. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before they force it on me. 🙄

I wouldn’t recommend it. You’re all the editor you need 😉

Word’s basic proofing feature has evolved to absolute junk.

I only use Word when I’m forced to by submission requirements. I don’t find it intuitive and it makes everything harder to get the way I want it to be.

This is my second language dear Linda, and this was interesting for me and trying to understand now. I hope you don’t mind. I know this is just fun. But for me learn or to remember how it is being used.
“This changes things.”…I understand for example like that, “Education changes things.”
“This changes thing,…. I understand for example like that, “This one changes (one) thing.”
“”These changes things.” I understand ….. “”All of them (They) change things.”
Am I correct…
About this “one-liner-wednesday” I have an idea, I hope it works. I will add soon.
Thank you for reading, I hope didn’t make you busy with this one. Have a nice day, Love, nia

No problem, Nia. 🙂
“This changes things” and “Education changes things” are parallel phrases.
“This changes thing” – You’re right. In order for it to be correct, it needs something between the words “changes” and “thing,” so your example works well.
“These changes things” on the other hand, doesn’t work unless “changes” is a noun and you add a verb. i.e “These changes are things that must be changed.”
I hope this helps!
