#SoCS – Sometimes

Sometimes, the days plod along and a week seems to take forever to end.

But sometimes, like this morning, I look at my weekly planner and wonder where the week went.

So I decided to write about it on my blog. I opened my browser, fully intending to write this post. That was more than an hour ago for the mere fact that I’d left my browser last night so that it would open on Threads.

It took me more than an hour to get coffee. COFFEE! I went without COFFEE because social media and outrage kept me glued to my chair. Kept me from writing this post.

The algorithm is a dangerous, dangerous thing these days. It can capture you and hold you hostage with its fear of missing out, caffeineless, shifting your addiction to something far more prone to keep you from being productive.

So this is my heroic attempt to break myself out of that cycle of needing to know what’s going on beyond these four walls.

I have my coffee.

I am free.

For now.

This cautionary post is brought to you by Stream of Consciousness Saturday. Find this week’s prompt here and join in. It’s fun!

“caffeineless” such a horrible word, Linda. We have to guard against that state.

I created a Facebook account eons ago. Then I closed it for years (protest: Zuckerberg). Opened it for some reason. Closed it (protest: Zuckerberg). Etc. The last closure was for many years and I didn’t miss it. Didn’t think about it. Then, about a year ago, I re-opened it (still hating Zuck) because there were some authors and teachers I wanted to follow, and I wanted to see who *they* would lead me to. That worked, mostly. But it also put me on that platform, and FB is even worse now than it was many years ago. Comments are worse, algorithm is vicious, ads everywhere, AI slop.

But the one difference between now and then is that I’m now way more socially isolated than I was. I’m talking extreme. And while blogs fill that a bit, blogging traffic is down and it isn’t as immediate.

I knew FB was hurting my mental health. I finally sat down a few days ago and asked myself: How often do you walk away aggravated, calm, satisfied? Anxious and annoyed was at about 85%. 2% was satisfied with the information and interaction. I think that’s alarming.

So, I quit cold-turkey two days ago. Tweaking a bit this time, but overall much better. One author/teacher does send out messages via substack when she’s going to do a live FB presentation, so I’ll leave my account open for those things.

I don’t think I ever wandered into Threads because it sounds like a nightmare.

Actually, Threads can be trained to show you only what you want to see. The issue arises when you decide you want to see what’s going on in the world. 🙄
It’s important to guard our mental health. Maybe more so now than ever. *hugs*

You are right 👍 Social media algorithms are really dangerous and encourage you to doomscroll. I don’t like doomscrolling.
