Dear WordPress.com,

I am loath to write yet another letter to you, since I typically prefer to spend my time writing actual blog posts, but I’ve been bitching on Twitter and in your forums to no avail, so maybe you’ll pay attention to a blog post. It’s not likely, but hey, you never know.

Please, stop. Just put down whatever you’re working on and stop with the futzing. You have been tinkering under my hood long enough and you know what? None of the “improvements” you’ve made are actually improvements.

Below, you will find explanations as to why your improvements aren’t improvements sorted conveniently by feature.

Post Editor

Let’s talk about this “Beep beep boop” post editor nightmare with less than half the functionality of the old editor. Thankfully, you haven’t taken away the old editor yet. However, I fully expect that one day, I will go to write a…

The Cost of Self-Publishing

Another great article and an upcoming freebie from Steve Vernon, Storyteller.
Note: Comments here are turned off. Please comment on the original post.

Steve Vernon's avatarYOURS IN STORYTELLING...

First off, I operate  my self-publishing business on a deep discount budget that would make Loblaws-shilling William Shatner look like a piker.

I make my own covers or use a Fiverr cover service. I do my own formatting. I do my own promotion. I do my own editing.

I am NOT saying this is the best way to do it. I truly WISH I could afford an editor – but budgetary constraints are a reality in my world.

So I was pretty interesting in reading these two separate versions of the very same story – how much does it COST to produce a self-published novel?

Take a look for yourself.

Lisa Medley, Missouri indie author, has this to say about how much it costs.

Ben Reeder, Missouri indie author, has this to say in reply.

As for myself – well, I spent absolutely NOTHING on the creation of my latest…

Great Loss = Great Beauty

Beautifully written. This is where great art comes from.

I sit here, with only the clinking of buttons and zippers as the dryer spins, because I just felt within my heart great loss, and at the same time I was forced to recognize great beauty in a world that was fictitious.

After watching The Grand Budapest, I can’t help but feel the immense loss of our protagonist, just as the narrator said from the beginning that we were delving into the mind of an unequaled man of loneliness. For a time I sat on the couch, watching the credits, taking in what I had just been ripped out of me, after the movie cleverly placed it within my very fabric. The people, the lifestyle, the era long since passed. I thought of how the movie resembled the battles of Don Quixote living out his fantasies in a world which no longer existed, but he tried so hard to…

Update WordPress

Thanks for this. I’m actually relieved to know that WordPress realizes there was a problem in their system and rectified it … even if it means my petition meant nothing in the course of events. What my petition did do was show me what an amazingly strong community we have here. Seeing so many people pull together was encouraging and inspirational. My faith in WordPress is restored. My faith in the real people here never wavered.

Here is an update I’ve received after posting the same question in the Blogging101 course today. For me this is enough of an answer. I hope it is okay for you guys to. Thought I let you know:

“Hopefully, I can clarify a few things. No blogs have been shut down by wordpress.com. There are a few bloggers whose ability to like and follow other blogs has been paused, in these cases because the volume of likes/follows was quite high — in the many thousands a day. The bloggers are considering shutting down their blogs themselves, but our support team is also working internally to figure out the best way to respond to the issue of non-spam bloggers using likes and follows at a volume typically associated with spam accounts.

I’m happy to answer any questions to to clarify anything that’s unclear about this — let me know. Again, these…

SUCCESS!!! 😀

Je suis Charlie

Indeed.

dieterrogiers's avatar300 stories

Been thinking a while now about how to honour the victims of the Paris attacks last week. I started writing a flash fiction story, but that didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to. So I decided to pick up my drawing pencil voor the first time in a long time.

For those not well-versed in the language of Molière: ‘je suis’ in French can mean both ‘I am’ and ‘I follow’.

Reasons why I should not work remotely

Such an entertaining read. I had to share it. I think we’ve all been there.

Nothing makes you feel more like a grown up than doing more than one load of laundry.

And not because there was too much of it, like when you turn your laziness into an experiment to see how much underwear you actually have.

(2 weeks’ worth.)

I separated, that’s right, SEPARATED my laundry into colours, black & white and other things that are too high maintenance for a washing machine. I read the little labels that come on clothes. Apparently those annoying scratchy tags of Itch have a lot of information – I did not realise that when I buy a shirt it actually comes with instructions on the maintenance of it. Like I’ve just bought a cat or microwave.

There are temperatures and not all of them can even go in a washing machine – this was a revelation to me. This from a person who buys clothes that…

Pingbacks – An Update

Having problems with pingbacks? Please read this post. It may be the solution to all your woes.

KG's avatarBooks, Music, Photography, & Movies

I did rant a bit on my blog when things weren’t working. So it is only fair that I update it now that it is fixed.

So yeah, pingbacks did start working for me since Saturday morning. Yay!!! For some reason, when I did post my WPC challenge post on Friday night, the pingback failed to show up in the Daily Post (DP) page. So I went back to this forum topic and updated the same. One staff from WP (I did get her name wrong in that topic. Very bad of me, but in my defense I was sleep deprived and was woken up by a bad dream just a few minutes ago and couldn’t get back to sleep) helped me check it out. So I tried it on my other blog post and in the second try (because I made my first post private) it appeared in the DP page. Hurray!!!…

What Is the United States?

If you’re American, click below and read this, and answer some interesting questions! 😀

Jay Dee's avatarI Read Encyclopedias for Fun

Most of you are American.  I can safely say that, because more than 50% of the readers of this blog are American.  In 2014, Americans made up around 60% of the readers.  So, chances are you’re American.  If not, forgive me.  I’m not American, either.

This is the first post in a new series where I explore each country that my readers come from, starting with the biggest and going down to the smallest.  However, I need your help.  I’m going to provide the most basic information that you can find, but I want opinions from you.

Are you American?  Have you lived in the United States?  Or have you visited the United States?  Even if you aren’t, please read on.

It’s a big country.  With an area of 9,857,306 square kilometres, it’s the third largest country in the world.  It has a population of…
