I’d decided that I would stop refreshing my damned stats page, I’d stopped looking for new posts to read in my reader and I’d even gone as far as turning off the laptop. And the other laptop. And the PC. So I’m standing in the kitchen, making my coffee for the morning and it hits me. The perfect subject for a post. Before I know it I’ve lost count of how many scoops I’ve put in the coffeemaker (I only have to count to seven, but there you go) and I’m trying to decide whether to a) get out a pen and paper and jot down the idea or b) turn a computer back on and risk staying up yet another hour to write – and refresh – and read.
So I’m writing this now (it’s 6:46pm) but all this happened to me last night. I failed to do neither a) nor b) and now I can’t remember what my brilliant idea was. But I still got a post out of the experience, so it wasn’t a total waste. 😛

This very reason is why I’m the Queen of Sticky Notes….
Now, if I could just decipher what I wrote on them…

The freshly pressed section seems to like ramblings or opinion pieces on current affairs. Guess that’s the only way to get views. Plus u need to go read up on SEO… it’s sickening..

I keep seeing that – ‘SEO’ – everywhere but I have no idea what it is. I will look into it. Thanks for your input, as always. 🙂

SEO – Search Engine Optimization.
E.g. In my blog, my top posts from Google are the Immortal Jellyfish and Biodegradable Urn, simply because there are a ton of searches on them on Google, and I appear very highly in the results on both the normal and image search. Zooby Zooby Zoo actually gets like 50,000 searches a month, but I’m ranked too lowly for that.
Tags and article names are very important as well. If someone types in the title of your article and its the only one on the we, you get first placed results. Sad but true. People often resort to misspelling to get first place results.

Ah, I see. I’ve only had two hits from google, both were ‘how to draw a poor boy’. Apparently I’m not very good at this 😛

I must warn you though… you sure u want to go down that route? It desensitizes the blogging experience.
But it doesn’t hurt when you have a topic on hand to search a bit to see what people want on the web.
Good luck!

This happens to me almost every day. Honestly, I’ve thought about leaving my computer on all the time because every time I shut it down I remember one more thing I needed to look up or send. Most days I turn my laptop back on so I don’t forget what I needed to do but I’ve been known to write that post-it, and another, and another. I’m so glad this happens to other people too!

We used to call this ‘keeping a diary’ and when it was just that, we didn’t have the self consciousness of knowing our diary was being read. Now that we write our personal diaries as exhibitionists, we are compelled to keep them going because we become addicted to exposure. It’s not the writing that’s the addiction, it’s the addiction to being read.

In the case of the blog, most definitely. I think I was addicted to writing long before I came to WordPress though…

Like some sordid love affair, you will never be free. Oh yes, you might want to play around a little on the side – writing a short story, the occasional poem, and yes, maybe even (shudder) a novel, but no one knows you the way your blog does. Your dreams started here, and no matter how far you travel away from this place, it will always know where you are. And own you.
