Where’s a burned out brake light when you need it?

I had my brake light replaced yesterday. That’s my back story.

Speed forth to today.

Leaving my house this morning, I was stopped by a frantically waving mother (mine). She wanted to let me know that my headlights were on. I explained to her that they were Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). I didn’t get into the fact that they have been required by law in cars in Canada for the past 21 years… my mother is 83 years old. There are many things I don’t bother to try to explain to her anymore. Anyhoo, that was my first notice today of DRLs.

The second one came this afternoon on my way back home. I was being followed by a cop car – which had one of its DRLs out. Because I just had a brake light blow, I imagined the scene in which I hadn’t already had it replaced and I got pulled over. My imaginary conversation went something like this:

Cop: You have a light out.

Me: Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t know.

Cop: Do you know how many times I’ve heard that?

Me: But did you have any idea that you’d be the next one saying it? (I point at his DRL and smirk, ruthlessly.)

Cop: (Puts his hand over his mouth, giggles, and runs back to his car and speeds away in embarrassment.)

Okay, so it probably wouldn’t go exactly like that. But I would have liked to have seen the look on his face, wouldn’t you?

You might have had good reason to KISS that cop in my younger days! Whenever we high-schoolers saw a one-lighted car the notion was to call out, “Pididdle!” right away, which gave one the right to kiss the person next to them. (It may have been, “Fadoodle!” but my memory is unclear on that.)

Then again, cops’ breath is probably more like stale donuts and old Norton’s coffee: YECH!

Yeah, they don’t need them. Also, if your parking break is the handle type, you can click it up one notch, it won’t engage but it will turn your drls off. While the pedal type will do the same its a little trickier.

I drive a minivan – no hand brake. Good idea for the drive-in! But the cruiser did have one DRL on, so considering they were there, they should be working. That’s what he’d tell me, right? I don’t know how long you’ve been out of the country, but DRLs are law now as long as the car is 1989 or newer, — even if you buy it in the US they have to be installed.

Heh, I’ve only been out of the country for a few years. And AFAIC, the DRL law has failed. Idiots now drive at night with just DRLs. Still, it would be useful here because of how many people don’t use headlights at all. That and cabbies(and many drivrs too) got this stupid idea that they nee to turn off their headlights when at a stoplight. Geeze, that was find on older cars where providing the amperage for headlights was significant but today, it’s not an issue…yet this behaviour continues… (sorry for the way late reply, just noticed this comment now while checking for ‘missed comments’ :/)

That’s okay. I think so many of the cars now have headlights that come on automatically when it gets dark that it’s not a real issue. But I agree, DRLs are better than nothing.

    Never happens, does it.?

The giggling was the best part. I wonder if a cop would be nice after you point that out.
