whereswilly.com – The $20 Blog Post

“Do you have change for a twenty?”

That’s how it started – with those words.

“I think so,” I replied, juggling gloves and newspapers to dig into my pocket. I pulled out a couple of receipts and a five dollar bill and then went into the other pocket. Just as I was about to give up, I found a ten.

“Yes!” I exclaimed.

All right, maybe I wasn’t quite that excited. I was just collecting for my paper route after all.

It was while I was walking back down my customer’s driveway, my gloves still tucked under my arm, that I saw the writing on the $20 bill.

“Yes!” I exclaimed, for real this time. “It’s a blog post!”

This is what I saw.

whereswilly

I couldn’t wait to get home to check it out.

When I googled whereswilly, I saw a Wikipedia entry for it, so I decided to go there first — in case it was some kind of hacking thing. It turns out it wasn’t.

According to Wiki, the “Willy” refers to Sir Wilfred Laurier, past Prime Minister of Canada. There are apparently close to 4,000,000 bills in circulation with this message, and you can, in fact, register on the website to see where the bill has been AND be emailed to find out where it goes. It’s based on a “Where’s George” site in the U.S., to track currency there, and has been used by researchers to track the movement of pandemics, such as SARS.

Isn’t that interesting?

I’m only the second person who has tracked this particular $20, but I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes. According to the website, I can do this with any bill, any time.

You can check out the Wiki page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where%27s_Willy%3F

Have you heard of this before? Have you ever come across a bill with a website written on it? Do you want to start one? It’s so cool!

  2. Hello: I got a Willy from the bank machine in Toronto, North York, I asked to see if it was “legal tender”. I was curious because my husbands name is Willy. It won’t last long in my wallet but here is the serial #BIV8167058 on a $20.00. Don’t know where it will go after I spend it!

  5. It almost sounds like a Wandering Book that my wife found. There was a website and a number that you could use to track where the book had come from, and where it goes. The concept is, after reading the book and leaving a testimonial, to leave the book in a public spot for the next person!

  7. Interesting , Linda. How do you know that it’s legitimate? Just asking, because I am a little apprehensive of these 🙂
All I have ever seen are love notes on the currency , never a website address.

    • I figured it was legitimate for a few reasons. First, because they’re not asking for anything in return – the site is free to join, and you don’t have to if you don’t want to track your bill – you can just enter the serial number and your postal – zip code and leave it at that. Second, the site’s been open since 2001 – most illegitimate sites disappear. And third, it seems harmless — and there was nothing in google that reported anything negative about it.

It’s my first time seeing a web address on a bill too! It’s kind of exciting. 🙂

  8. I’ve seen it, but never tried it. Sounds cool tho. Where was it tracked before?

    • It is cool! It was only tracked in one place – Toronto, Ontario, which is about 2 hours away. The other cool thing is that it tells you WHEN it was tracked. It was 39 days ago. Possibly nobody bothered – or it just sat in someone’s wallet. 🙂

  11. So…where had it been? I’d be waiting for someone to be all “Meth lab equipment purchase.” Are you signing up to have it emailed where it goes? Also, I have seen them, but never got one. Cool that Canada does it.
