ABOUT THE STORY
What inspired your story?
I was inspired by the times, infrequent as they are, that I’ve been woken up by the alarm and returned to my dream after hitting the snooze button.
Did you have to do any research? If so, what kind? What did you learn?
I did absolutely no research for this story. It’s entirely a product of my weird imagination.
Tell be about the setting you chose and how it influences your work.
The story takes place in modern day, in a city much like any other.
What would you like readers to take away from your story?
Pure entertainment. And an intense desire to read more of my work. 😉
This exciting new anthology is all about dreams, nightmares, visions and hallucinations. My contribution is the story of Jacob, a man whose dreams prove to be precognitive. Here’s a short excerpt.
SNOOZE
“I’ve never been much of a dreamer.”
No, I can’t say that, I thought as I looked in the mirror and straightened my tie. She’ll assume I’m talking about my hopes for the future.
I couldn’t afford to fuck up this date. At best, I was in a position to have the relationship to end all relationships. At the least, I’d save her life. The tricky part would be not coming across as a nutcase. Something I wasn’t totally convinced of myself.

“Jacob?” She approached me with an outstretched hand and I plastered a surprised look onto my face. The dating site I’d “found” her through was this newfangled deal where the guy’s photo was visible to the lady, but the woman’s face was a mystery. It was meant to ensure true love or some such crap. That I’d actually managed to choose her was proof enough for me that she was the woman of my dreams. We were fated to meet.
“You must be Susan,” I said as I shook her hand. She took the lead toward the restaurant’s door, confident in her ultra-high heels and black raincoat. Susan looked every bit the reporter—light on the makeup under black-framed glasses. I’d have taken bets there was a notepad and pen in her purse, even if I didn’t already know what her job was.
“I feel like I have an advantage over you,” she said as she settled into her side of the booth in the Japanese restaurant. “The website told me everything about you, but it said they told you next to nothing about me.”
The urge was great to “guess,” but she’d think I’d been stalking her somehow.
“They gave me a few of your interests,” I said. “I know you like to write.”
“But I bet they didn’t tell you I’m an investigative journalist.”
I raised my eyebrows, hoping for the second time she wouldn’t see through me. “Really?” I said. “That must be exciting.”
She shrugged. “It has its moments. And you? What does Jacob do for a living?”
“I’m a … I used to be an elementary school teacher.”
“Used to?”
“Yeah. I got kicked out of school for missing too many days.”
Because I slept in. Because I had to find out what was going to happen to you.

The first time I saw my name in print in an actual physical book was the day I received my copy of AFTER THE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. I was ecstatic when I got an e-mail from Transmundane Press to say my story had been accepted for the anthology, but nothing–and I mean NOTHING–could have prepared me for the moment I opened a real book and found my name in the Table of Contents. I rushed around the house to show my kids and when I ran out of those, it was all I could do not to tear out of the house and scream at the passing cars, “THAT’S ME!!” while pointing at the book.

Once upon a time, there was a flame on a candle, in a window, of a house, on an island, on a lake, on the Earth, in the universe…
Flashback to the flame.

Mike and I sat holding hands across the desk from our lawyer and best friend, Jeremy, when we got the news. The crisply burnt edges of the will should have told me something was weird. I didn’t say anything—I guess I was too excited.
Jeremy shook his head as he dotted the last “I” on the page. “I’ve heard about long-lost relatives coming out of the woodwork before, but this is the first time I’ve seen it happen.”
He stood and extended his hand across the desk. “Mike, Marissa, congratulations. You’re the proud owners of an island with a house and two sheds.”
“Thank you, Uncle Hubert, whoever you were,” Mike said.
“Will you move out there right away?”
“Yeah, we’ve decided.” Mike smiled at me. “We’re going to sell the condo. Assuming the place is livable…”
“I’ve been assured that it’s in great condition. Electricity, water… It’s even got great satellite service.”
“That’s perfect then,” I said. “Dibs on one of the sheds for my art studio.”
“Done. I’ll use the other one for my woodworking shop.” Mike smiled and squeezed my hand. He kissed my forehead with a sigh, and I let out one of my own, already mentally packing my art supplies.

Our trip to Lick’s Island began as an adventure. We were both twenty-four, had known each other for a year, had been in love for three-quarters of that time and married for half of it. We arrived in a speed boat, our guide a sun-browned old man with wild, straw-like hair and teeth that would rival a picket fence. When he dropped us off with the canoe he’d towed along behind us, he seemed nervous, his eyes shifty and his laugh like the rusty springs on a beaten-up car. He kept asking us if we were sure we wanted to spend the night.
“Sure as the sun’s going to come up tomorrow,” Mike told him.
So off he went, leaving us behind.
