“I spy with my little eye…”
It started out with colours, when I was a small child and progressed to “…something that begins with…” a letter of the alphabet when I was old enough to spell. It was a great way to pass the time on long drives.
I have since graduated from that delightful little game however. Sure, I played it with the kids when they were little. But around the time when my eldest son was born, my ex and I started playing another game in the car. The first one to guess the name of the band playing the song on the radio got a point. The game would start when we got in the car and wouldn’t end until we arrived at our destination. New trip, new game.
Since then I’ve started playing it with my eldest. At nineteen years of age, he’s almost able to beat me, especially when the music is of the newer variety. It’s taught him to appreciate the music that is the same age as he is and older, which is great as far as I’m concerned. I thank heaven to this day he’s never been interested in rap – possibly because of years of listening to his dad and I play “The Game.” It’s amazing how far a little competition can go.
When was the last time you played a silly game with your family and/or friends, and what was it? Let’s have some fun today, and teach each other a game or two!

Twenty questions can be fun, either with or without cards. And my Grandfather used to play a guessing game with us, Animal, Vegetable or Mineral. 🙂

We’re still at the singing age with my son. I’m waiting for the ‘I Spy’ or the ‘License Plate Search’ game.

Singing is fun. What’s the License Plate Search game?

Might be a United States thing and it really only works on long trips. You call out when you see a different state license plate. My sister and I played it when my family drove up to Canada and another time when we drove down to Florida. The goal is to find all 50 States before the end of the trip. We kind of went beyond that to simply finding one of each in our lifetime. Hawaii and Idaho were the most difficult.

Not Alaska? Yeah, it would be more fun down there. We only have 10 provinces and three territories, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Saskatchewan plate. I don’t think people leave Saskatchewan. Ever.

That was the problem we had with Idaho. With Alaska, people can still drive to the other part of the country. Hawaii has that Pacific Ocean problem.

You’d think the Hawaiians would have put an amphibious car into mainstream production by now. 😛

Maybe they did and they’re going away from the rest of the States. 🙂

A game we play around the table is “2 good things, 1 bad”. Each family member must outline these in view of the day’s events. It promotes dinner-time conversation and focuses on the positive. 🙂

I did play wordgames with my kids too, both at home and when we did drive in car.
Last time I was playing a game was last winter with my boyfriend.
Thanks for sharing.

You know what, we don’t play games in the car with my grandson yet, but I’m going to tell my daughter. I think it’s an excellent thing to start. He’s a smarty-pants anyway.

Well, I spy, and the alphabet game, but my favorite one is the one where you do, “I’m going to grandma’s house, and I’m taking…” and we list alphabetical items, but only two of my kids will play it, so it’s sort of sad for me, LOL!

Hi Linda, We traveled across the states numerous times with our four kids and played the same games. We also took turns getting the next vehicle coming toward us in the other lane. Man, we hated it when we got an old junker or smiled with that beauty of a car. Another one was naming a town or city or state starting with the first letter of the next highway sign. The tunes were always fun and my kids are now all in their thirties and love the rocknroll from the sixties and seventies. Great memories!
