I had it all planned out: clean up the house and get together the stuff for the garage sale, write one book, edit the other, read lots, learn Japanese… So what do you think happened? None of the above. Between my mother and my eldest son hanging around, I’ve barely had a moment to myself. Not that I’m really complaining of course. But I had plans, damnit!
Unscheduled was the turning around of my living room and the exit of my old wall-unit that I was thoroughly sick of looking at, and then the subsequent cleaning up of my living room which included vacuuming places that haven’t seen the light of day in almost five years. The good news is, I’m happy with the result.
Here’s the most recent pic. I obviously need someone who can paint a mural.
I went to see the movie If I Stay on Tuesday night. I went Tuesday because it’s half price, which gave me just over $5 off. I didn’t make it to the showing I wanted however, so I decided to head over to the book store. Bought a book (How To Be a Canadian by Will and Ian Ferguson which actually had me laughing in the aisle) and cashed in my loyalty points which gave me $5 off. Then, having almost 2 hours to kill, I went to Boston Pizza (no, Jay Dee, I didn’t have the ribs) and ordered a salad with my meal and a big-assed glass of wine. I sat alone and enjoyed my meal (the waitress forgot to bring me the salad) and killed myself laughing while reading the book I’d just bought (How To Be a Canadian, if you didn’t catch it the first time) and when the waitress came to ask me if I was ready for my bill, I mentioned the salad. The bill came -$5, which made me happy.
Total bill for the night:
less than $20 for the movie and popcorn and a drink
less than $20 for the book
less than $20 for a meal with a big-assed glass of wine and a coffee including the tip.
I think I did quite well. The movie though? Made me cry. A LOT. But it was extremely well-acted and well-scripted. I’d recommend it for sure.
Tonight I’m sitting down with a bottle of white and some music to, with any luck, do some editing. Or writing. Or at the very least, reading. I have too much to catch up on before the kids come home on Saturday.
As for the garage sale? I can’t see it happening before Sunday. I need a break.

I don’t comment on everything, but I read almost all of your blog posts. I really enjoy reading about your life and your perspective on things.

Sounds like quite the life. Very cool indeed.
Your book reminds me of an ad I saw before a youtube video the other day. It was these Indian people teaching other Indians how to be Australians. I just laughed and laughed. It really tickled my rather odd funny bone. 🙂

Right? And I even took your advice and numbered my list. No predicting what other people are going to demand of us, unfortunately. 😛
Best of luck with your lists!

Thanks for the luck! I might need it. haha
Plans are always about “best case scenarios,” and most of us aren’t living “best-case-scenario” lives. 😉

I had a lovely chicken and mushroom alfredo. I did think of you when I saw the ribs on the menu.
You must read this book, by the way. Will Ferguson’s Hitching Rides with Buddha about hitchhiking from Okinawa to Hokkaido was a great read too. I’m sure you’d get a kick out of both of them. 🙂

Alfredo, another thing I can’t get in Japan, except in places like Costco.
I think I’ve heard of that book before. It may be on my to-read list.

Well, you can start a day headed down the road and end up on a totally different road somewhere along the line, but you’re still driving, you know? Lovely living room. At least you have a place to sit down and figure out where it all went wrong! 🙂

As much as I despise when my plains are disrupted, I can deal with it if the alternative is at least productive. The living room looks great! And I’m jealous of what sounds like a very lovely evening with yourself :-). I’d say you certainly did very well! And thanks for the brief review on the movie. Those always seem hit or miss to me as far as acting and scripting. Happy editing/writing/reading, whichever you end up doing.

Thanks, Leigh. 🙂 At the moment I’m editing between being distracted by my blog. 😛 I know what you mean about the movies. It’s actually rare that I find a movie which has me so involved that I can suspend my belief over things like, there’s no way that actress can play that instrument that well but the movie was so good that I didn’t even think about it while I watched it.
Thanks for the compliment on my living room. 🙂 There’s so much space without the wall unit – I may put some music on and dance! 😀

I make a list, nearly each day, of what I need to do, and then I pick just three things off of it. Your Japanese, I assume, is beginning? Watashi wa gakusei desu. = I am a student. Enjoy your new living room!

I learned Japanese nine years ago when I went there – I’m really just learning again. Nihongo is fun to learn! 😀
I made a list. It didn’t help. 😛
But my living room is like new, which is a good thing. 🙂

Haha! That reminds me of when I came back from my 10 day visit in Japan. I was living in Quebec at the time and every time someone asked me a question in French it was all I could do to answer “oui” instead of “hai,” let alone resisting the urge to bow.
Mata ne!

That is so reassuring, I answered my manager in another language today, and I thought I was crazy! I feel better thinking someone else has this problem. In my son’s karate class the instructor had the students bow to the parents each session, and the parents just sat there, no acknowledgement! I always got up and bowed back, it drove me nuts!

Oh you’re so not alone. I took Karate in Quebec… My classmates were always agog when I conversed with my sensei in Japanese… or English for that matter. Haha. Fun times. 🙂
But the bowing – you’re right. Nobody on this side of the planet seems to get it.

Easy to do when you don’t practice it every day. I think it’s like that with any language. I’ve forgotten SO much sign language that I learned to use with adults, since I only use it with my young son.
