Save HarsH ReaLiTy!! – SUSPENSION LIFTED!!!

No one likes spam. In internet terms (as opposed to the stuff you find on the grocery store shelf) it’s the bane of our existence. Its sole purpose is to get our attention and once it does, it either begs us to buy something or gives us something we would never pay for – something like a virus.

Then there is the exception to the rule. In fact, there is only one exception that I’ve found in over a decade of browsing the web. It may have seemed like a “spam follow” at the start, but when I followed the cookie-crumb trail that led me back to its source, it ended up benefiting me beyond my wildest dreams: it was HarsH ReaLiTy.

Jason, also known as Opinionated Man, has a huge (over 50,000 blog, twitter, and Facebook combined) following on his blog, HarsH ReaLiTy. His passion for connecting with other bloggers is instantly recognizable by the way he interacts in the comments. How did he get such an audience? By following other blogs. By doing the exact same thing our self-serving spammers do. The difference is, Jason gets the attention of other bloggers and once he does, he helps them! Not by selling them things they don’t need – by guiding them to find followings of their own.

He has dedicated hours and hours to create places for bloggers to find their communities:

http://aopinionatedman.com/2014/12/29/wordpress-meet-and-greet-3-all-bloggers-welcome/

To help them draw attention to themselves:

http://aopinionatedman.com/2014/11/13/share-your-blogger-profile-all-bloggers-welcome/

To help them promote themselves:

http://aopinionatedman.com/2014/08/06/share-a-post-all-bloggers-welcome/

The trickle-down benefits alone are nothing less than astounding. If you have ever read any of my helpful hints on blogging, you can thank Jason – he taught me three quarters of what I know.

Why am I telling you all this? WordPress has seen fit to suspend HarsH ReaLiTy’s ability to follow and “like” other blogs. It’s a crime. WordPress is taking away one of its own biggest assets – a service provided to its own patrons, FOR FREE, and out of the goodness of one man’s heart. I wrote a post myself about how hard he works to help others grow their blogs here: https://lindaghill.com/2014/09/23/wordpresss-own-welcoming-committee-harsh-reality/

If Jason C. Cushman has ever helped you, if you have ever read any of his blogging advice, if you have ever guest posted for him, if he has ever re-blogged you, if you have ever commented on HarsH ReaLiTy and met another blogger there, please sign below.

Comment – leave your words of support or just write the words, Save HarsH ReaLiTy. I will make sure the WordPress powers-that-be see this post and all the support that goes with it.

Re-blog – make sure this goes out to every corner of WordPress that Jason has reached.

HarsH ReaLiTy is not a spam blog. It is WordPress’s shining star.

Edit: I’m purposely NOT responding to comments here so as not to dilute the message: WE SUPPORT HARSH REALITY AND WHAT JASON DOES TO HELP BLOGGERS!! Thank you to all who have shared and commented so far, and thanks in advance to all who will. Please keep commenting and re-blogging! Let’s keep this at the top of the Reader!

Edit: Now that HarsH ReaLiTy’s suspension is lifted I’ll turn off the comments here. This post will remain, however, as testimony to what Jason means to us! Long live Opinionated Man!!
Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who commented and re-blogged. Your support is both overwhelming and heartwarming.
Now pass around the cookies!! 😀

Edit – April 20th: Jason re-blogged this with the following comment:

I actually didn’t read this until now because I was moody at the time. I feel the love from this post and the comments here. Thanks bloggers. -OM

I’ve turned the comments back on. You’re very welcome, Jason. It was the least I could do for all you’ve done for this community. 😀

Jason and I differ on the subject of animals and their care, but, he has been a supporter of my blog and I want to support his. I especially want to register my disbelief at this kind of censorship. Maybe we don’t have all the facts, I don’t know and won’t comment on that. But Jason has helped me and I want to help him, in return. It is the good and kind thing to do.

I can’t help but wonder if this happened because of someone he pissed off and/or offended. If it wasn’t for him, I doubt my blog would have lasted as long as it has. SAVE HARSH REALITY

Sigh. Suspending HarsH ReaLiTy is censorship, nothing else. He has an active blog. People comment and interact with him. You can’t do that with spam, and WP should know the difference. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Linda.

So, according to WordPress, we’re not supposed to help other blogs, if we’re not doing it “the right way”.
Jason’s words abuse, offend, but must of all, they make you think. If loving HarsH ReaLiTy is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

Has Jason offended me? Sure, but guess what? I’m an adult, and I know that I’m not always going to have the same opinion as everybody, so I skip those posts.
When HarsH ReaLiTy first followed my blog, I only had about 20 followers, and those were phantoms. Jason interacts. He tries to act tough, but if you take the time to sort through his reblogs, guest posts, and helpful hints, you’ll find the words of a sensitive man who is just trying to find his way in his own harsh reality.

Re-blogging this from Linda’s blog, which, I found through HarsH ReaLiTy. WordPress is making a big mistake. Let’s help them to see that and lift the prohibition against OM. And, if you don’t already, follow both Linda’s blog and HarsH ReaLiTy!

Considering that I’ve been re blogged only twice, and once by OM, I don’t think he’s a spam blogger at all. Following a a lot of blogs doesn’t mean spamming them. WP has lost its mind.

That is so unfair! I have also learned a ton from Jason and owe a number of my followers to his threads and re-blogs of my posts. I especially admire the way he responds to the zillions of comments his blog engenders. I’ll also be re-blogging momentarily.

This is the place to leave your support for Jason Cushman of Harsh Reality – Linda will be collecting all our comments and sending the post to WordPress Powers – and on that note – I say again for the benefit of WordPress Powers:

Je suis Charly means ‘I am Charlie’, or I follow/am with Charly’ – I understand Charly and feel like them, we suffer from this loss and relate as we are the same way they are, and are as outraged as they are…

    Are we?
We all cried Je suis Charly … what does it mean if we are to allow our man with a voice and an opinion be shut down….Je Suis Opionatedman?”

Do we have the power as bloggers to change what needs changing – do we care? Are we empowered to connect and share our lives with WHOMEVER WE CHOOSE?! One of Jasons top posts that he wrote in response to a naive woman who was wondering if blogging and writing really could make a difference in the world – someone who could not speak to people and so chose instead to write – and write and paint… I am not ashamed to say that that person was me and Jason has PAINTED the SUN for so many – been an encouragement for me and others to continue with our passion – mine being to write and paint. –http://aopinionatedman.com/2014/12/31/if-i-could-paint-the-sun/ read it and read it again and again and understand – YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CARE!

Most excellent dearest Linda ❤ I shall reblog this in a short while (I need an interval for max impact! 😉
    I left a comment on J's last post –

    http://aopinionatedman.com/2015/01/15/ok-i-made-a-decision/
    – as a plea to all who read his blog – to reblog that post and write their own.

Perhaps post a link to this post over their too so ALL his followers will read? I thought perhaps his 'made a decision' title would get a few views' and folk would read my plea to support him?
Cannot believe WordPress are doing this – it is an abomination of free speech really…

This so unfair and actually odd that WP would act this way with OM. His blog was the very first that got me motivated to write more and more as well generous tips on not only getting more traffic but finding blogs that shared similar interests. SPAM, OM? that is riduculous…I get enough spam to know the difference as many do. WP is really behaving like a misguided police officer. I also have a blog with blogspot and find it far easier…less complicated but I`m here for the WP community as Jason at Harsh Reality is…he has brought many many bloggers together. Good job, Linda, for stepping up.

He’s formed a family there. A supportive network that I’m proud to be part of. I’m very sad that he will be leaving WordPress. I will look forward to when he weaves his journey into a book.

I’ve always been overwhelmed with gratitude for Jason’s blog and his comments on my site. It’s because of the depth and range of his posting that I am writing again, submitting stories for publication, stretching and experimenting with poetry, working on revision #4,and most importantly , learning to laugh when I write and not be so afraid. I want him to be left alone by WP.

I find all of this very confusing, I thought we were supposed to create a community by liking and following bloggers of quality. “Harsh Reality” was one of the first blogs I followed and it has served as an example of “possibility” because he posts what he wants and in
a way that is so interesting that it does not matter if you agree…what matters is that the post is interesting.

I just finished exploring what is left of his blog…The Blog post “10 reasons people hate me” looks as if it has been spammed. It looks
as if the site has been hacked” — has anyone else seen this?

This is a man who’s blogging habits and tips are so influential that if he so much as reblogged your post that’s a guaranteed host of followers/subscribers. That’s because OM keeps it real, he keeps it 100 and you either love him or hate him; that’s the Reality. I will say this tho: everything happens for a reason so Jason keep your head up. Its all good. You got this 🙂

I have guest posted on Harsh Reality a few times and he has reblogged some of my posts. He and I don’t see eye to eye on a lot of matters (e.g., the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady), but he is a truly generous blogger who uses his platform to give other bloggers — and new bloggers — an opportunity for much greater exposure. He reads a lot of other bloggers’ blogs, likes them, follows them, and promotes them by reblogging and/or allowing them to guest post on his blog. That is a good thing, not something he should be punished for.I can’t understand why WordPress considers him to be spammer.

The thing I noticed about Jason right off was that he promoted other blogs and bloggers to an incredible degree. That, and his uniqueness, drew me in. His personal blog posts kept me. Some things he said, I agreed with. Other things he said, I didn’t. No problem with that because he has the right to say what he wants to in his space and if I didn’t like it, I could simply bow out. Point being, this guy has brought a hell of a lot of bloggers on WordPress together in long-lasting relationships and turned my attention to fellow writers that I might not have ever met but for him. I don’t know of any spam bots who do that.

I agree with Linda, Jason. It is NOT ok. You should have the right to follow anyone just like the rest of us, and the right to re-blog other people’s posts, just like the rest of us. You should have the right to hit that “Like” button just like the rest of us. I see nothing in the Terms of Service that says if your blog exceeds X number of followers, then you are prohibited from growing any further. Doing this to you makes the rest of us worried about our futures as bloggers – as my follower count grows, and as I find other blogs I wish to follow, I’ll now be concerned that should I surpass an unspecified WordPress limit, my blog will be shut down. That is not a good way to build the blogging community that WordPress claims to support.
