Save HarsH ReaLiTy!! – SUSPENSION LIFTED!!!

No one likes spam. In internet terms (as opposed to the stuff you find on the grocery store shelf) it’s the bane of our existence. Its sole purpose is to get our attention and once it does, it either begs us to buy something or gives us something we would never pay for – something like a virus.

Then there is the exception to the rule. In fact, there is only one exception that I’ve found in over a decade of browsing the web. It may have seemed like a “spam follow” at the start, but when I followed the cookie-crumb trail that led me back to its source, it ended up benefiting me beyond my wildest dreams: it was HarsH ReaLiTy.

Jason, also known as Opinionated Man, has a huge (over 50,000 blog, twitter, and Facebook combined) following on his blog, HarsH ReaLiTy. His passion for connecting with other bloggers is instantly recognizable by the way he interacts in the comments. How did he get such an audience? By following other blogs. By doing the exact same thing our self-serving spammers do. The difference is, Jason gets the attention of other bloggers and once he does, he helps them! Not by selling them things they don’t need – by guiding them to find followings of their own.

He has dedicated hours and hours to create places for bloggers to find their communities:

http://aopinionatedman.com/2014/12/29/wordpress-meet-and-greet-3-all-bloggers-welcome/

To help them draw attention to themselves:

http://aopinionatedman.com/2014/11/13/share-your-blogger-profile-all-bloggers-welcome/

To help them promote themselves:

http://aopinionatedman.com/2014/08/06/share-a-post-all-bloggers-welcome/

The trickle-down benefits alone are nothing less than astounding. If you have ever read any of my helpful hints on blogging, you can thank Jason – he taught me three quarters of what I know.

Why am I telling you all this? WordPress has seen fit to suspend HarsH ReaLiTy’s ability to follow and “like” other blogs. It’s a crime. WordPress is taking away one of its own biggest assets – a service provided to its own patrons, FOR FREE, and out of the goodness of one man’s heart. I wrote a post myself about how hard he works to help others grow their blogs here: https://lindaghill.com/2014/09/23/wordpresss-own-welcoming-committee-harsh-reality/

If Jason C. Cushman has ever helped you, if you have ever read any of his blogging advice, if you have ever guest posted for him, if he has ever re-blogged you, if you have ever commented on HarsH ReaLiTy and met another blogger there, please sign below.

Comment – leave your words of support or just write the words, Save HarsH ReaLiTy. I will make sure the WordPress powers-that-be see this post and all the support that goes with it.

Re-blog – make sure this goes out to every corner of WordPress that Jason has reached.

HarsH ReaLiTy is not a spam blog. It is WordPress’s shining star.

Edit: I’m purposely NOT responding to comments here so as not to dilute the message: WE SUPPORT HARSH REALITY AND WHAT JASON DOES TO HELP BLOGGERS!! Thank you to all who have shared and commented so far, and thanks in advance to all who will. Please keep commenting and re-blogging! Let’s keep this at the top of the Reader!

Edit: Now that HarsH ReaLiTy’s suspension is lifted I’ll turn off the comments here. This post will remain, however, as testimony to what Jason means to us! Long live Opinionated Man!!
Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who commented and re-blogged. Your support is both overwhelming and heartwarming.
Now pass around the cookies!! 😀

Edit – April 20th: Jason re-blogged this with the following comment:

I actually didn’t read this until now because I was moody at the time. I feel the love from this post and the comments here. Thanks bloggers. -OM

I’ve turned the comments back on. You’re very welcome, Jason. It was the least I could do for all you’ve done for this community. 😀

As far as I’m aware, Jason has never spammed anyone, certainly not me…
If helping other bloggers by giving them tips, information and introducing them to other bloggers is a WP crime, then I and a lot of others I know, are as guilty as Jason…
Are WP going to freeze us all?

I have interacted with Jason in the past, sure he posts a lot, but he comments a lot too and gets involved, he is not a spam follower as he interacts with you rather than mass follows and moves on without a word to be said.

The guy is awesome. Go to Linda, sign her comments, keep it going. Despite his mass following tactic, he actually responds to people and talks to them personally, on top of often lending his platform to others so they can reach a larger audience.

Suspending Jason’s ability to like and follow other blogs is not only wrong, it is hypocritical when WP themselves encourage follows and likes.
He has always been open about everything to do with his blog. He id most definitely NOT a spammer and the attitude he received on the forum was appalling. WP should be ashamed of themselves

I stand with OM! We started about the same time, he was one of the first guys I spoke to. You know what spam does? They don’t respond to every message. He’s always responded to me. Most sites which employ the same tactics, stop responding after a month.

Save harsh reality📄! I have followed HR since last year when I started WordPress. He is a very interesting man with his own opinions just like everyone other human being. There is no reason for anyone to believe he is a spammer. Why? Because he has so many followers? I better stop following Bill O’Reilly than, I mean he has well over 50,000 followers all over the place. Does that make HIM spam? So why someone with his own views and opinions as well as many faithful followers is considered a spammer? Just not true.

I am so mad I am crying… this is not right….. has anyone checked the Spam guidelines for WordPress? I have a feeling this can be fought and reversed, especially if everyone pulls together and bombards WordPress Admins with their own guidelines.

This is for Jason! An amazing blogger who has gone above and beyond to help promote me, even though I do not get to blog nearly as much before. He is not a spam blogger by any means. Many of his posts are comical and/or provide some amazing input on how life truly is without all the warm fuzzy fantasy we like to attempt to provoke the world into thinking it truly is.

This truly upsets me that the blog is suspended. It was one of those blogs I would go to read on an incredibly shitty day. Why? Because I knew there would be something on there that would make me laugh. Calling this blog spam is like trying to say Web MD has no relevant or useful medical information. Take the time and re-blog this and help save HarsH ReaLiTy, get the word out. This is not fair to Jason, guest bloggers (like myself), or his readers!

Jason is not a spammer. He read and commented on my blog, and he answered every comment I ever posted on his blog. He wrote articles that made me laugh and others that made me think. This is a sad situation.

I’m a new blogger and thought the whole idea of community was to follow and interact with other bloggers. In fact “be inspired by the neighbours” is the current daily post in our Blogging 101. It seems from the multitude of comments I’ve trawled through on several sites that Jason has been a great help to lots and lots of people; how can that be bad? I’m opposed to most forms of censorship of which this seems to be one, – a strange and unjustifiable one. I am a feminist, so I may not like all of Jason’s posts – I haven’t had time to read them, – but that is beside the point. WordPress (I thought) provides a forum for discussion and argument, – healthy, powerful and with great potential for social healing and growth. I support the supporters of Harsh Reality and opinionated people everywhere. Do we have a reply from WordPress?

Harsh Reality was one of the very first blogs I followed on WordPress. Before I followed him though, I read through a lot of the posts and when I realized just how helpful Jason is to other newbie bloggers like myself I hit the follow button. I’ve been using the internet almost since it’s public inception and wide usage. I’ve seen a lot of spam in all different forms and I’m here to tell you that Jason is NOT a spammer nor is he tryin’ to abuse the system. He simply found a way to get more followers and in so doing has helped many bloggers, including me, be better at it, all for free and in the spirit community service. I say Save Harsh Reality and apologize to Jason, maybe even give him a year free hosting for all the trouble. It’s not like WordPress can’t afford it.

I think the entire idea of following as a spam technique is rather lacking in logic from any perspective. For example if ten million spammers decide to follow my blog how does that affect me? It doesn’t affect me in the slightest. I mean, all they are doing is following me. I don’t get their messages and they don’t appear in my feed etc. If I don’t like them I can block them so no harm done. In other words, why care how many spammers follow me or why?
I enjoy WordPress and I buy all the bells and whistles add ons for my little blog but this decision on their part is one I just don’t get. I pondered back and forth in my mind why someone using follow even only as a purely selfish means of gaining attention is a bad thing for WordPress or for other users and I can’t.
The thing that kept popping up was that they seemed to be pushing the idea that wanting to promote ones blog is a bad bad thing to do. I don’t get that either. Is he working the system? Sure, but is it hurting anyone? I don’t see how it is.
Lacking any other evidence I must assume that he simply triggered the bots and they auto rejected him and when he challenged that decision in his typical “less than humble” manner he pissed off an admin or two because no one likes to be called out publicly on an issue they really can’t defend logically etc.
Sure he can rub people the wrong way, especially feminists. Sure, he has an odd blogging style and maybe more openness than is good for him. But, he is reaching people that otherwise might have given up and walked away. People that like his off the cuff style. Maybe there is room for reconsideration?
Ha ha, maybe my comment should have been a blog instead of a comment
