So maybe I just need to drink more wine. Because lately, I’m finding it hard to relax enough to write anything. You know, anything creative. I’ve been working on a story for an anthology, and it’s going… slowly.
I think the real problem is that I never get out anymore. I’m tied to the house all the time now that my Autistic son has finished school. If I go out, I take him with me or I don’t go. Without going out — by myself — I’m unable to gather up any inspiration. I like to observe people. It’s one of my favourite things to do. I can sit in a restaurant for an hour or two and write while I half-listen to a conversation at another table; I get stories that way. Not necessarily about exactly what they say. Most of the time one sentence is enough to get my creative juices flowing.
I need time. I haven’t had 24 hours off from this 24/7 job of being responsible for my kids since the first of October last year. That’s more than five months ago. Since I had a day off…
That’s it, I’m opening a bottle of wine. (I wonder how many other posts are ended this way.) I shall make it so.

Opening a bottle of wine is often the START of my posts, lol. (((((hugs))))) to you if not inappropriate. Tough job! Good luck with the story for the anthology. Hope you get a break. Somehow sometime soon.

I hope you get a day off soon. Better yet, I hope you can arrange help so you can schedule a morning or afternoon, or at least a couple hours, every week just for you. In the meantime, maybe you could write about going out into the world with your son, sort of an experiment. I bet that would be interesting.

It’s not often I can talk him into going anywhere. But I’m working on it. 🙂 Thanks, JoAnna.

Really hard when you don’t have a day off. Or at least part of a day. There are no places where your son could go?

The youngest one is in school, but I can rarely get Chris out of his room. Seems I’m stuck.

I have read about how resources are scarce for parents when kids with special needs transition from the school system. Here in the US it is at 21 years old.

I relate well to sitting in a restaurant (bar) and half-listening to conversations and becoming inspired. I hope you find a way to work out a schedule where you have some Linda-time.

Thanks, Dan. 🙂 Half-listening to conversations in restaurants was something I missed when I lived in Quebec and didn’t understand most of what was being said.

I totally understand Linda can’t your eldest son help you out. Sounds like you need some me time!! It is so hard being a mum especially on your own !! 💗💖

My eldest does help out once in a while, so I do get out occasionally. Usually it’s to buy necessities though. 😛 But I haven’t given up hope! 🙂

White for me Linda. I totally feel for you. As a teacher my vacations are like a bus man’s holiday because I’m never without kids either. Xx

I feel for you. Linda, I know how difficult it can be looking after an autistic child, but to not be able to go out on your own must be awful. I may not be able to help you, but I can give you lots of virtual wine at least!! 🍾🍾🍾🍷🍷🍷🥂🥂🥂🥂Cheers!

In vino veritas. I can relate totally. I have been on this “part time” night job, seven days a week, for three years now, not a single day off. Coincidentally it’s been nearly three years since I’ve done anything with the new novel. I am not drawing any equivalence to my situation and having an autistic child. We have an autistic granddaughter and I understand to a degree the challenges involved. Different situations, similar frustration.

It’s amazing, isn’t it? For some, heartache brings inspiration. Who knew it was the doldrums of staring at the same four walls day in and day out that kills it? 😛 Thanks for sharing your situation, Rick. It’s nice to feel not so alone. 🙂
