Unable to concentrate on doing anything productive today, I listened to a book. It was a good book. The Wives by Tarryn Fisher. Gripping. You should pick it up.
On a completely different note, today is the day I’ve decided 2020 can go to hell.
Because if you’re like me and stuck at home already, or if you’re going to be like me soon, the days of the week are hell to keep track of. We have a wonderful community here on WordPress and all over the Internet as well, and I’m sure many people are feeling nervous and/or isolated. I want to make sure every one of us has somewhere to congregate and someone to talk to.
I want everyone to know that you can start discussions with each other in the comments, and if you’d like to write your own “What Day is it Anyway?” post, you can link to this one. Hashtag #WDIIA.
I don’t want much in life. A roof over my head, food to eat, health …
The simple things in life are fine. I live inside my head much of the time, so that’s my entertainment. It can be, at least.
I managed to get out for a walk with Alex this afternoon, and then another one by myself after I worked in my car. I didn’t get a lot of work done, since I need a new battery in my laptop. The old one only lasts an hour, hour and a half.
This is the view from my car. I got out and took the photo so I wouldn’t pick up the dirty window.
Photo: Four adult Canada geese and about 25 goslings, all grazing on the grass with the lake in the background.
And here’s a video I took just off the trail when I went for my walk. Turn up the sound.
So yeah, that was my Saturday. Quite nice, actually.
This adaptation of #WDIIA and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is brought to you by both. It’s fun! https://lindaghill.com/2020/05/15/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-may-16-2020/Or you can link to this post if you just want to write a What Day is it Anyway? post.
Holy shamoly, it’s Friday! And that means it’s time for your Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt. Believe it or not, I’m starting to have a hard time coming up with brand new prompts. It’s only been, what … 321 weeks since I started this? Not even a year’s worth of daily prompts. Sheesh! Here’s your SoCS prompt for this week:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “want.” Make the word “want” the first, second, or third word of your post. Have fun!
After you’ve written your Saturday post tomorrow, please link it here to this week’s prompt page and check to make sure it’s here in the comments so others can find it and see your awesome Stream of Consciousness post. Anyone can join in!
To make your post more visible, use our beautiful SoCS badge! Just paste it in your Saturday post so people browsing the reader will immediately know your post is stream of consciousness and/or pin it as a widget to your site to show you’re a participant. Wear it with pride!!
1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing (typos can be fixed), and minimal planning on what you’re going to write.
2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence – one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry – it doesn’t matter. Just let the words carry you along until you’re ready to stop.
3. I will post the prompt here on my blog every Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say “Write about dogs”; the prompt will be more like, “Make your first sentence a question,” “Begin with the word ‘The,’” or will simply be a single word to get you started.
4. Ping back! It’s important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours. Your link will show up in my comments for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top. NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, such as Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.
5. Read at least one other person’s blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read all of them! If you’re the first person to link back, you can check back later or go to the previous week by following my category, “Stream of Consciousness Saturday,” which you’ll find below the “Like” button on my post.
6. Copy and paste the rules (if you’d like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers you’ll meet and the bigger your community will get!
7. As a suggestion, tag your post “SoCS” and/or “#SoCS” for more exposure and more views.
It’s been … different. The last two days have been, actually, but I’ll start with today. I went for a walk on my own as Alex went from having his coat and shoes on to changing his mind as I was about to walk out the door with him. By the time I got up the street, according to his brother, he was already in his pjs again. So in went my headphones and I spent the next hour and 45 minutes walking snaking my way around the block listening to the book that was due to go back to the library today.
I am so glad I discovered Libby and that I can listen to books from the library on my phone. I’m seriously thinking about having audiobook versions made of my own books.
The rest of my day has been spent mostly working on the aforementioned own books.
Yesterday:
I took Alex to his cardiology appointment in the morning. As I suspected, there has been a slight change in the structure of his heart, necessitating a slight increase in his meds. I was surprised to find that very few people–patients, doctors, techs, or nurses–were wearing masks. Then again, there are no known cases of Covid-19 in Kingston right now, and everyone who enters the building is screened. All of the people sick or suspected of being sick are sent to the other hospital in town.
Alex ended up doing well, with only a little nervousness when he saw the social distancing lines on the floor. It’s the first time he’s been anywhere but home since that part all began. I’m glad I took him, though admittedly, I’ll be watching us both closely for the next two weeks, just in case.
The <sarcasm>best</sarcasm> part of my day came when I got home and found a letter in the mail. The letter itself was dated May 6th, and the post mark on the envelope tells me it was mailed May 8th. What did the letter say? Get this.
Although my name was on the envelope, my mother was the addressee of the letter itself. It said something to the effect of “We’re writing to inform you that we are moving you to [Name of] Retirement Home. This move will happen on May 8th. Signed: The Hospital Administrator.”
I had to talk to someone at the hospital where my mother has been living since March 22nd about another matter, so I called and we discussed that. Before I hung up, I told the woman about this letter I’d received, saying it was odd.
Me: Anyway, I just want to confirm my mother is still there at the hospital.
Her: No, they moved her on Friday.
Me: They what?
Her: They didn’t tell you?
Me: No! I just got the letter today!
Her: …
Me: They moved her five days ago without telling me?
Her: Apparently.
At that point I started laughing at the absurdity of it all.
So yeah. My mother is in yet another retirement home, and half her stuff is still in the first one.
I just can’t with this whole situation anymore.
The good news is my mum seems to be doing well. She was quite chipper when I talked to her on Tuesday … although she had no idea where she was. Turns out I lied to her when I told her I was just up the street from her. She’s halfway across town.
<insert eyeroll>

Wanna know what gets neglected in my house all winter while I’m busy single-parenting my kids, writing and editing books, and all the other stuff that goes into my 24/7 job?
My upstairs ceiling fan. Apparently the spiders take over where I leave off, though.
If you would like to participate in this prompt, feel free to use the “One-Liner Wednesday” title in your post, and if you do, you can ping back here to help your blog get more exposure. To execute a pingback, just copy the URL in the address bar on this post, and paste it somewhere in the body of your post. Your link will show up in the comments below. Please ensure that the One-Liner Wednesday you’re pinging back to is this week’s! Otherwise, no one will likely see it but me.
NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, like Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.
As with Stream of Consciousness Saturday (SoCS), if you see a pingback from someone else in my comment section, click and have a read. It’s bound to be short and sweet.
Unlike SoCS, this is not a prompt so there’s no need to stick to the same “theme.”
The rules that I’ve made for myself (but don’t always follow) for “One-Liner Wednesday” are:
1. Make it one sentence.
2. Try to make it either funny or inspirational.
3. Use our unique tag #1linerWeds.
4. Add our lovely badge to your post for extra exposure!
The effects of not writing a WDIIA post yesterday: waking up this morning and not, for the life of me, being able to figure out what day it was today. That’ll teach me.
I spent most of my yesterday avoiding most things. I wrote an email. … and that’s about it. I don’t know why I have days like those, I just do.
Today was a bit better. I took Alex for a walk and we cleaned out the pantry of the expired boxes, cans, and jars of food. It was a cold but colourful day outside.
Photos depict scenes taken on our walk around the neighbourhood. 1. The first leaves on a maple. 2. Daffodils and red tulips. 3. Potted plants and ceramic bunnies.
I do love this time of year. The extreme cold and extreme heat I can do without, thank you very much.

First, happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there! Whether you’re in a country that celebrates it today or not, I hope you did something nice for yourself. We all deserve it. ❤
Alex woke me up with a hand-drawn card and a potted plant that’s been sitting on my kitchen table since I brought it home from my mother’s place last month. And my eldest son cooked me dinner (penne with chicken in a lovely pesto sauce), so that’s been my treat for the day. I feel lucky to have all three of my kids home with me. Such a blessing.
Aside from that, there’s really nothing new to report. I worked a bit on the prequel to Saddled, which I’ll give away to subscribers to my newsletter. Then it will be on to Book 2 of that series and hopefully Book 3 of my “The Great Dagmaru” series before Book 3 of the “Once a Week at Woody’s” series comes out. They’re all written; they just need editing.
Busy busy.
I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Alex has an appointment this week. At a hospital. Imagine that. He doesn’t want to go because of the whole Covid-19 thing, and I don’t blame him. But I’ve cancelled the appointment twice already. And they assure me that there are no cases in that hospital.

My neighbour and I sat outside this morning on our front lawns, chatting and waiting for the Snowbirds to fly over. We waited and waited … Figuring we’d missed them, she went back inside and I went for a walk with Alex.
We found the Snowbirds in the park.
Wait for it. Watch the sky.
(That’s Alex “talking” in the background.)
I had my sunglasses on, so I couldn’t see the screen and missed them flying away.
So cool. So uplifting. 🙂

Damn it I knew I was forgetting something. It’s Friday! And I’m finally here with your Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt! This not knowing what day of the week it is is starting to wear holes in my brain. Haha. Here’s your SoCS prompt for this week:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “cave.” Use it as a noun or a verb. Enjoy!
