I’ve avoided whining about it for eight days but I’ve had enough. I don’t know exactly how a rant at this point is going to help, but here we go anyway.
I have a blister. OOOOhhhh, you say. Poor baby has a booboo. But this isn’t just a blister. It’s a boil sent from the universe to counteract every wonderful moment I had walking around Japan. It’s the bane of my existence. It’s the antithesis of joy come to smite me for being relatively healthy all my life. It’s the Blister From Hell!
Today will be my seventh day inside these four walls. Apart from going outside in the snow in -10 degree weather in bare feet and flip-flops last Friday to get Alex off the school bus, I’ve been completely housebound. Unable to wear shoes.
And for what? A spot on the side of my heel the size of a toonie (if you’re not Canadian, look it up) that’s gone from angry red to white and is now ringed in a lovely shade of mulberry with a gray poupon-coloured centre. (I’ll spare you a photo – you may never eat mustard again.) After eight days (EIGHT FRIGGIN’ DAYS) it still hurts to stand on my left foot.
What have I tried in order to relieve it? I’ve soaked it, I’ve popped it with mixed results, (the first time I tried I discovered it was a series of tiny blisters beneath the winter-thickened dry skin of my heels – I gave up after half a dozen attempts) I’ve tried grinning and bearing it, I’ve tried bandaging it, unbandaging it, putting cream on it, leaving it to dry… the result? I still can’t bear the idea of trying to get a shoe on. And I need groceries, damnit! I need fresh air! I need people–crowds–to inspire me to write something other than a whiny-rant/plea-for-escape!!
People, you are my last hope. Tell me what to do. To hell with sensitivity–I need results!

Tea tree oil is brilliant for icky things as its anti bacterial and anti fungal. You could apply it directly or add it to water when you soak it.
A cluster of blisters…….my daughter and I get a form of eczema that comes up as tiny blisters under the skin. My daughter has just found out its an allergy to rubber and something that is in rubber that is also found in all kinds of things like ketchup and cinnamon.
I hope it feels better soon.

I worked for a podiatrist. I have some medical training. You need to Go To A Doctor ASAP. If it is not going away, if it is turning funky colors, if you can’t walk with it… You could be developing some really bad. Ever hear of cellulitis? If you haven’t, Google it. It can kill you and isn’t that uncommon. Frankly, depending on what it looks like, you could be looking at an ER situation. Seriously. In my area of specialty (lymphedema), cellulitis was a real concern and you really don’t want to mess around with that. Lancing things yourself, and doing it wrong, can cause all sorts of problems. You tried, you failed, the thing isn’t getting better. Throwing a “plaster” on could cover things up & make them hard to monitor. They can also make some conditions worse. Yes, you could get to a dr. and they could say, “This isn’t so bad.” Better safe like that than sorry, and they go calling codes and running around because you waited too long.

If none of the suggested remedies work, you might try amputation. I guarantee it will get rid of the blister.

Soak it in warm water with epsom salt. It’ll help drain the blister. It might sting a little, but it should help. And, as everyone else is saying, if it doesn’t get better in a couple of days, see the doctor. You don’t want to risk infection.

When I have problems with my skin in this way, I use a lotion made of beewax, the more clean the better. Put it on in a skinny layer many times a day. Natural og very helpful. Wish you the best 🙂

When I started going on walks, I had to research blister treatments. What I do when I get blisters is I don’t pop them. Popping them will make them take longer to heal.
Sometimes I get impatient, though. When I do that, I clean the opening with hydrogen peroxide on a Q-tip and then swab it with the other end. Then I put a band-aid on it. Keeping it clean is very important.
However, if you start seeing signs of infection, you might have a bigger problem, and you will want to contact a physician.
Get well soon, Linda!

you are gonna have to pop that blister/boil , then soak the area in hydrogen peroxide , you are going to have to open the blister/boil some to get the peroxide in to clean it out, the best way is to lance it with a razor blade and yeah it’s gonna hurt a lot, but the peroxide will kill all the bacteria and infection , then wrap your foot in a bandage , and air it out often .

That’s exactly what I’m afraid of if I take it to a doctor… ye olde slice. I wonder if they’d anesthetize it first? But I do think you’re right. Either that or wait and wait and wait for it to heal by itself. Ugh.
Thanks for the tough love, Butch.

You cannot wait NINE DAYS!
*shakes you*
Someone let it go too long, soaking and soaking and slowly letting out pressure, and that someone ended up in the ER with a fever and the dr had to lance it and take a huge section of necrotic tissue and then that someone couldn’t walk AT ALL for 4 days. That someone is permanently scarred and is still freaked-out from the dissociative drug used during the procedure, four years later.
(not me, srsly)

Were there signs of infection other than the fever? Because this IS getting steadily better. When I step on it now I can only feel a slight twinge, whereas a few days ago I couldn’t even rest it on the floor. But there’s still fluid in it…

With multiple blisters in one site, you may be looking at a fever blister, versus one cause by rubbing. What works for hikers is to treat it with apple cider vinegar. How you do it depends on how quickly you want cured, and if you are willing to put up with some pain.
The slow, but painless (relatively speaking) is to pour some cider vinegar onto a cotton ball then dab it onto the blister and cover with a bandaid. Repeat as often as you want, more is quicker, but a couple hours between treatments.
For a faster cure, tape / wrap the cotton ball to the foot. Replace every four hours. This will hurt as the acid in the vinegar works on the blister, but it does the job much faster.

You need a DR or a chiropodist, podiatrist or what ever the hell you call them theses days, they were doctors until recently. It sounds like you have an infection. You could try covering it with fullers earth or any cream your pharmacist cares to advise, to draw out the poison ! ( pharmacists formerly known as chemist!!) But it all honesty I really do think it is time to call the doctor. Linda you have enough on your plate go to the doctors!!! gentle hugs xxxxxxxxxxxx

That’s the thing – it’s not swollen around the blister, which makes me think it’s not infected. And considering how many bugs are being spread around lately (in doctor’s office waiting rooms especially) I’d rather not go unless I absolutely have to… ya know what I mean?

Ow. That’s terrible! You say it’s a bunch of smaller blisters so I don’t know how this would work, but try sterilizing a pin and piercing the edges of the blister. Then try and squeeze the fluid out. It’s not going to be a nice experience but it’s worth a try.

I hate to say this, but it sounds like you may have an infection requiring medical intervention. If it doesn’t get better really soon, go see a doctor. My husband got a horrible blister like that while going through some physical training, and it had to be treated medically.
