Note to me – Just Jot it January 2019

This year’s Just Jot it January marks the fifth anniversary of the event. Five years! So hard to believe. Every year it’s been more of a success than the last, but I can’t help but wonder if it can be improved.

At the very least, I’d like to do something about my lack of organization at the start of every new year. Which is why I’m writing myself a note here to remind myself of the plans I inevitably skip over because of time constraints. You see, every December I go back to the Just Jot it January from the year before and just do what I did then. Because it’s easier.

Here’s what I propose to do differently in January 2019 (should I be granted another year of blogging):

1. Collect prompts from other bloggers once a week instead of once at the beginning of the month. This will reduce the number of people who have good intentions (much like New Year’s resolutions) to carry on with the challenge but drop out before it’s time for their own word to come up. Or suggest a word and then forget why they suggested it.

2. Run a contest for a new badge. My mad Paint skillz were fun to look at, but five years of a stick figure sitting in front of a flaming screen is enough, methinks. Suggestions on when I should run the contest are welcome (which is why I’m doing this publicly rather than privately). December makes the most sense, but it’s less than ideal given that so many people are so very busy.

3. Suspend the Friday Reminder for SoCS for the month and post it as a daily prompt, the same as the rest of the JusJoJan prompts, including adding it to the list ahead of time, along with all the other prompt words for the week. This will, I hope, cut down on the confusion of having two prompts show up on my blog on one day.

If you have any suggestions on other ways to improve the entire process, I’m all ears. Or, well, eyes since I’ll be reading your comment, not listening to it. You know what I mean.

  1. I didn’t participate as much as I would have liked this year due to health issues, but I still look forward to next year. I like your ideas for next year, especially suspending the SOCS prompt. As to the badge contest, why not initiate it the middle of October with a maximum 30-day period for submissions? Submissions could be in before everyone is distracted by the holidays.

  2. Congratulations on the 5th anniversary. Definitely good to plan ahead although like most people I’m in the “if it ain’t broke why fix it?” camp. Having the prompts ahead of time would be useful though and maybe asking for suggestions in November rather than December might get more response. I also like that the rules aren’t hard and fast. If things are too rigid they can lose the fun element. The badge works for me and my artistic skills are so limited that if you did hold a competition for a new one I wouldn’t be taking part. I don’t find the SoCS prompt being on Friday confusing. Thanks for all your hard work.

  3. I wonder if I’ve done it five years, too?
I agree you could change things up, but honestly, it’s great as is 🙂
That badge is bloody well iconic!

  4. I love Just Jot it January just the way it is and often think ,if it ain’t broke why fix it?? 🌹🌹🌹🌹

  5. Happy Anniversary!! Since this is my first year participating I like it as is. Any change you decide to make is icing on the cake 🍰. #JusJoJan is fantastic 😄

  6. Five years. Cool. Congrats!

  7. Congratulations on reaching the 5 year mark. I would say keep SOCS because I like it the best. Does that rhyme?

  8. I like the idea of having all the prompts for Saturday as well as the rest of the week (minus Wednesday, which is kind of a free-for-all). Collecting the prompts a week at a time would also work out well. Maybe post the list on Friday, starting with the Saturday prompt and going through the following Friday. And yes, let’s have a badge contest…

  9. Congratulations on reaching five years of Just Jot! I love joining in with this challenge, and am quite happy with the badge as it is. I also love joining in with SoCS and don’t get confused with the different prompts. I do like your idea of getting the prompt for the week including SoCS, I have to admit to having to schedule some of these posts in advance, as January is a bit manic, and it really helps knowing what the prompt word is in advance! 🙂

  10. Lots of great ideas… though I think it’s fab anyway!

  11. Five years! Congratulations!! That’s an awesome accomplishment. (And its so much fun too. Sorry I missed the first four.)

  12. I like the stick figure with the amazingly long arms…not that I could do any better mind you.
