Tuesday Smorgasbord

I was incensed to discover that none of the stores in the town I moved to sell the Lotus incense I love to have in my house. So for the last six years I’ve been tempted to order it straight from the manufacturer in India. It really is wonderful stuff. To, or not to? I think I just might.

This post is part of Tuesday Use It In A Sentence: https://awordadventure.wordpress.com/2015/12/29/tuesday-use-it-in-a-sentence-incense/ where MLW posted “incense” as the word of the week, and To Or Not To Tuesday: https://myriad234.wordpress.com/2015/12/29/to-or-not-to-tuesday-week-9/ where Deborah makes some very valid points about New Year’s Resolutions. Check them both out and join in today!

To Do or Not To Do Tuesday: Week 8 (sort of)

admin-ajax.phpIt has been weeks 8 since I’ve started this feature, but it’s only the 7th post because, well last week’s unwritten To or Not To Tuesday post could easily have been about whether or not to write a To or Not to Tuesday post that day, and we all know (or can easily find out) that such a post did not occur.

But hey, that’s the beauty of it. It can go either way, and last week I obviously needed a break. Everything sort of got lost in a blur of depression that I tried to largely overlook. But depression would have none of that. The good news is that the cloud lifted a bit (a few days later than I had hoped for), but that’s another story.

Anyway, I wasn’t sure what this week’s post would be other than I’ve been thinking a lot about my blog and what…

Tuesday Use It In a Sentence – Banish

If I ease myself away from the temptation to eat Hallowe’en candy, I can usually resist. If I banish the idea of eating it completely, the temptation becomes greater. Strange…

This post is part of Tuesday Use It In a Sentence! You can find the prompt this week here: https://fortyandfantastique.wordpress.com/2015/11/09/tuesday-use-it-in-a-sentence-banish/ Please join in! It’s lots of fun!

#TuesdayUseItInASentence – abyssal

Steve wanted his diorama at the aquarium to look abyssal, so he built it dense and with little light. His clients complained it was too dark. Back to the drawing board, Steve.

Just a quickie

I was on Twitter a moment ago and saw that #1lineWed is trending. I didn’t know this was a thing! I wonder if it predates my One-Liner Wednesday prompt… does anyone know? Have you heard of it before?

Anyway, to get more exposure on your One-Liners, make sure you tag your posts #1lineWed! I’ll add the suggestion to the rules section next week. This is so cool!

An Imitation Game

I was reading some of The Daily Post entries today, as I sometimes do, and a good number of them refused to play along with the prompt. Today’s prompt was this: Write a post about anything you’d like — in the style of your favorite blogger. (Be sure to link to them!)

I’m not sure if the participating (and I use that word loosely) posts I read were a good cross section of all of them (I perused about 15% of them) but a great majority of those I read said they didn’t want to imitate anyone, for various reasons. Some simply ignored the prompt and linked anyway, some said they couldn’t find a favourite, and some said they were too happy with their own writing “voice” to be bothered. One even thought it was creepy.

The whole thing reminded me of my high school drama class. We were given an assignment and had a few days to research it before we were to come back to class and demonstrate what we’d discovered. The assignment was to observe the way different people walk and imitate them. Not really a difficult thing to do, and yet no one in the class would do it. We all stated that it was too uncomfortable – we felt like we were making fun of people. I don’t remember if I refused to do it on those grounds or if I was too self-conscious to be the only one who did do it.

It seems strange to me in the blogosphere that people wouldn’t participate in such a thing as an imitation game. Is it really that hard to mimic another writer’s style? Is it that distasteful?

Would you do it?

What has Stream of Consciousness Done for You?

It’s been an amazingly successful week for SoCS! We’ve had a record number of participants and quite a few new bloggers join us, which makes me very happy. 😀

After months of writing stream of consciousness posts, I’m finding that it has loosened me up in most of my writing. I’m not quite as anxious when I begin to write a blog post. I’m wondering if anyone else who participates in stream of consciousness writing (whether here on WordPress or elsewhere) has discovered the same thing.

What is the best part for you about writing this way? For me I have to say it’s the speed in which I can get a post out. Not having to edit–something I usually do to a fault–makes it much easier to write a blog post on Saturday, which happens to be one of my two busiest days of the week in most cases.

I’d love to hear from everyone who has tried writing a stream of consciousness blog post! I’m still working on getting caught up with reading everyone’s posts from yesterday and replying to comments. I’ll be reading though, and will reply as soon as I can.
