“Listen to your heart.” What does it mean?
It’s a phrase we hear all the time. Songs have been sung, people pass it off as words of wisdom to the forlorn and the heartbroken. I found it in my horoscope today. The sentence before it stated that my emotions must not be ignored.
As advice, it sounds pretty. It lends to the imagination the idea that our hearts speak to us and can guide us on which way to go when we are unsure. But when we listen to our hearts, must we necessarily go in the direction we really want? Or does it mean that we should do what we know is right?
I wonder if cardiologists everywhere roll their eyes whenever they hear the phrase spoken aloud?
Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump…
Blog post of December 6th, in honour of Every Damn Day December. Check it out! It’s not too late to join in!

At that time in the morning you’re entitled to a double negative. Heck, take a triple! 🙂
It is a loaded phrase, isn’t it?

Well they have to say follow your heart because it would look pretty stupid to say ‘follow your soul/inner voice/voices in your head’.
I’ve got a gig coming up in January with OM as well. Must get to pre-writing. Unfortunately couldn’t do the two weeks because it fell on my week off work and we are going away for a few days but one week is good!!

Hey, that’s great! January’s going to be an interesting month over at HarsH ReaLiTy. 😀
And I agree – that would make for some awkward lyrics, wouldn’t it? haha

The heart has always been immortalised in romantic fiction or music and so has been attributed with a mind of its own – What the heart wants, the heart gets etc. The other part of the anatomy which is far less romantic is ‘go with your gut feeling’ This time of the morning – rumbly and in need of sustenance.

I cooked professionally quite a few years, from restaurants to old age homes… sauces, sweets, and rustic are my specialties… I can bake too, use to sell cookies and cakes at the farmers market in Dunham the first year they had it… you name it I can make it and better than in most restaurants… I don’t eat out much because I can make better at home…

Good thing I am sober. Otherwise I’d be wailing away in a falsetto voice doing Triumph’s “Follow You Heart” tune.

Never understood that saying. I think it means do what you feel is right, but that doesn’t always means it’s the smartest move.

True. One would think listening to the brain would produce more smart moves…

Turn it into a council and find that middle ground. Unless you want to blame one or the other exclusively.

Right. But saying to a spouse after being caught cheating, “But my brain/heart told me to do it!” isn’t any less likely to get one out of trouble. 😉
Better to do the middle ground thing and get it right in the first place.

I refuse to listen to my heart. It’s dumb, like a middle schooler trying to impress a girl. I ended up putting slugs in her hair. It hasn’t gotten smarter. So are you taking the advice? Where is your heart leading you?

Where else are you? Though, HR is an awesome place. I get a week in mid January! Excited and scared at the same time. Already getting topics ready and will likely type up the posts late this month.

I’m also trying to do the post every day on my fiction blog – you’re following me there, right? http://lindaghillfiction.wordpress.com/ and I could always pop over to The Community Storyboard and post there as well. If I have time I might do that.
Cool! It’ll be great to see what you write at HarsH ReaLiTy. It is a bit overwhelming at first, but it’s pretty darned awesome to see your name up there on OM’s page. And it’s loads of fun! You’ll have a ball. 😀
