I need organisation. First, I must state that this post was inspired by our lovely Belinda at Idiot Writing. (You can find the post here: http://idiotwriting.wordpress.com/2014/03/14/organisation/ .) In it, she tells how much more organised she is than I.
When I do finally get a moment to myself to sit and write, I invariably get comfortable with my laptop and, before I begin, I look around the room. It’s a mess. I think to myself, “I need to be more organised,” but do I do anything about it? Of course not! I just got comfortable.
So I write, but in the back of my mind there is the mess I should be cleaning up. I’m unable to fully relax and enjoy myself. Why don’t I just clean it up? Because it will take hours–hours that I could be spending writing. And what’s the use when my darling children will just mess it up again anyway? Doing a little bit at a time is useless. I’ll just end up doing the same little bit again the next day.
It’s a vicious circle of discomfort for me.
I did, actually find something that worked for me once. When I was selling my house back in Gatineau, Quebec, I had to clean up the place to show it to perspective buyers. So I took a picture of the mess, one room at a time. I then worked my ass off, non-stop, until I was ready to take an “after” picture. I was truly amazed at the progress I was able to make, and I had a reward at the end to boot–a picture of my immaculate room.
I swore I would do that again when I moved. I made a New Year’s resolution, four years ago, to make and keep this place clean. I did it again three years ago, two, one, and this year as well. HA! The difference? First, I’m not selling, and second, back then I wasn’t writing.
One of these days…
How do you deal with organisation? Or do you? I’d love some suggestions.

Have you ever tried FlyLady? She seriously saved my life many years ago. Now however, I just want more hours in the day to stay on top of things. 🙂

A 27 hour day would be ideal, wouldn’t it? 🙂
Is FlyLady a maid service? I’ve thought about that, but not only can I not really afford it, I’m afraid I may lose someone in all the mess. 😉

No. FlyLady is a self-help decluttering and organisational website. lol
You know if you lost someone in the mess, you’d have to call the fire brigade and some of those guys aren’t too hard on the eye to look at 😉

Before I sit down to write, I gather all my props: beverage, tobacco, kleenex (in case my writing makes me cry–Hahah). I used the toilet whether I need to or not… take my shoes off, make sure the dog has something to chew on, so he won’t be pestering me…
But trying to organize my thoughts? Never been able to do that. A lot of my posts are proof of this.

Yep, I’m with you. The closest I can come to organising my thoughts is to empty my head. …which isn’t that difficult now that I think of it. 😉 haha

I’m the same way! I actually LOVE to clean. But, i hate how long it takes. So, i put if off and off until it’s BAD. Part of my problem is I have so MUCH stuff. I already went through everything and tossed or donated all i could part with. But i still have so much stuff… and limited space where to put it all.
I just spent the day reorganizing yesterday. Had a leak in my ceiling and it forced us to move stuff around. Everything that had a home in a corner or nook , now was homeless. I had to rearrange everything. I have about half my room done, the closet and one side of the room with the shelves on that side. I still have the other side of my room and the shelves there to go through but …work. I’m tempted to call out of work and just get it done while the motivation is still there. Most likely though? the other half of the room won’t get done until weeks, months, later.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cleaned up an area because of a spill or worse, because I’ve lost something. It’s half the reason anything gets done around here!
Good luck with your project.

The picture idea is great! Although my house isn’t too terribly cluttered there are areas that could use a little straightening. But, I get your writer’s issue too. When it comes to writing vs organizing, writing always comes first. It shouldn’t, but it’s a bad habit to break.

I figure if I get my novel written and make my first million, I’ll be able to afford a maid. …
Yeah.

It is my plan. I have rejected al but essential housework until we move again – I REALLY dont see the point of sorting it all out until we settle a bit. SO it is CAMP out at the idiots household 😀

I enjoy cleaning–the process, not just the end result. So I tend to use cleaning the kitchen as a reward for doing my writing–“Okay, just two more pages and then I get to go do the dishes!” That probably makes me a strange person, but I already knew that.
