Today’s Japanese lesson involves something that affects all of humankind. Nay, all animated being-kind. It is a need unsurpassed since the dawn of time. No, not coffee. Though coffee is essential! Don’t get me wrong.
No, this requirement outweighs all other requirements. From mere brewing to utter urgency, it is a force to be reckoned with. It is… the need to go to the toilet. And it is a must to learn in any language native to where you’re traveling. So let us consider the phrase in Japanese, “Where is the washroom?”
Say it with me:
O-tearai wa, doko desu ka?
Directly translated it means, “The toilet, where is it?” As you can see, the word for toilet has a lot of vowels in it. In Japanese, we pronounce each one individually. So, “O” always sounds like an O in the alphabet; “te” has a soft “e” sound, as does “a,” and “i” always sounds like “ee.” I give you: O-te-a-ra-ee. Try it. Try it again. Now imagine you’re bursting at the seams and try it again. It makes the rest; “do-ko dess ka” seem like a leisurely stroll in the park, doesn’t it?
Conclusion – cross your legs and eyes and whine. Someone will point you in the right direction. It’s a human thing, after all.

😆 I prefer the sign language here! I remember once during my Europe trip, when we stopped at a store on the highway for using the restrooms, the signs were so confusing (and there wasnt any stick figure going along with the sign) that some of the old ladies in the group entered the men’s because they couldn’t hold back for too long. After some screaming and bursting of the doors they found the right ones 😉 I , for one, waited to see for sometime and then go inside !

Excellent idea, KG. Do what everyone else is doing. If you see someone running funny, follow ’em! 😀

haha, I totally screwed up that word but I did try! my son laughs as my Spanish because I pronounce words with a French accent. Oh well, what are you gonna do. my grandson taught me something new on the weekend, he said, “Nana, when you gotta pee real bad and you are waiting in line, bend over and scratch the back of one leg…it stops the urge” I tried it, and well, yeah it does if you stay in the position forever! 😉

I’ve gotta try that! If you see me walking up the street in Japan dragging my suitcase and hanging on to the back of my leg, you’ll know I need to pee. Hahaha!

Wow, I really sounded Japanese when practicing out loud! At least I thought so. If I we’re Japan they’d probably end up laughing at me while I cross my legs and point at my crotch!

If that’s the case, you can only hope karma exists. 😛 I’ve been laughed at… I’ll probably get to it later in the month.
Glad you’re sounding Japanese! We’re on our way. 😀

Wooow. I really suck at learning new languages and picking up phrases. I am never going to remember this, so good thing I don’t currently have plans to visit Japan or I would also pee myself. It took me forever to remember how to say “Move your ass!” in Spanish, despite so many coworkers saying it to me every day 🙂

Haha! Yeah, it’s weird how some people are really good at learning certain things. I kinda suck at languages too, but what can you do? Gotta survive in these exotic places, right? 🙂
