#SoCS – Be

What do you want to be when you grow up? I used to hate that question. I never had a real answer because I had no idea. It, to me, was an impractical question. I’m ten! How would I know? Hold on, while I weigh my options… I used to be envious of the kids who could just spurt out a profession like it was what they were born for. How about, I want to be a caring, compassionate human being. It’s something else to know how you want to occupy yourself when you reach a certain age, isn’t it?

Right now I’m occupying myself with my laptop, awkwardly typing with the puppy’s head on my lap, and my kid is making weird gurgling noises at his own computer while he feeds from his pump. The tv is on but there’s no sound – nobody is watching it. Not even the dog. Is it true that dogs can’t see tvs? Is that a myth? Or was it just true of the old curved screens? Because Winston seems to be able to see my flat screen.

I had to get up to feed the dog. He made me put the computer down. I’m almost out of milk. I panic when that happens, because it means I’ll either have to drink my morning coffee black or not at all. And that last option is not an option. As my best friend observed, I don’t exist before coffee. I am not.

To be, or not to be? Ask me after coffee. I think my brain just exploded.

  3. “I tended to get asked, “And WHEN WILL you grow up?” Still trying to find an answer to that one,” she sighed.
“I don’t mind reading the “nothing past midnight” fasting clause for blood or medical procedures. I don’t eat breakfast. Then I remember coffee is considered as nothing — and I consider it as mandatory.”
“Your post was a smiler,” she added.

  5. The opposite with me. I had so many ideas when I was growing up: librarian, artist, psychologist, marine biologist, nurse, writer…now I am struggling to be anything at all, but I know I am a good, kind, compassionate person.

  6. ‘To be, or not to be? Ask me after coffee’ Haha. Oh, this is so true.

I wanted to be a writer when I was 8 years old. Then, I let people convince me it wasn’t practical. I went through wanting to be a teacher, some sort of career with horses, and a psychologist(I actually majored for 3 years in psychology), and now at 31, I’ve published 4 books. So…I guess I actually knew what I wanted to do way back then. I just had to stop listening to other people’s opinions.

  7. I wanted to be an archeologist, which never happened, but I did find old bones here and there, which I’d save. … Our cats watch TV sometimes. I even have a video made for cats to watch.

  9. Loved this. I always make sure I have some powdered stuff stashed away. Better than no coffee.

  10. The long and winding road of what to be when I grow up will never disappear….. I’ve seen young dogs look at the TV when a small furry animal is moving on the screen, but after a while they realize ? it’s not real and stop noticing.

  11. I know what you are talking about…coffee without milk, oh no. I am still trying to figure out what I want to be. I think we evolve. 🙂

Thank God I grew out of that! Being an architect was on the list for a while until I made a “D” in Basic drafting.
Now I just want to be remembered.

  15. I’m sixty and on disability retirement, and I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. I can think of one person I’ve known in my entire life who did know, when she was ten, and it actually happened. Still haven’t figured out how that happened…

  16. It took me until my 40s to finally “find out what I wanted to be” when I grew up. Better late than never?! Lol.
