I never did like averages. When they say, “the average age is between (this) and (that)” it always made me think about those who made the average what it is. For instance, the average is between 25 and 50. What about the 10s and the 75s? Nobody ever thinks about them, because they’re not in the average – but they’re just as important in making the average as anything else.
In sports I always root for the underdog. It’s why I’m a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. You remember them? The famous golfers? They’re always the first out on the greens every season. Haha. (They’re going to win the cup next year, by the way.)
I can see the appeal in being considered average. Having two special needs kids, the word “normal” has a unique set of meanings to me – and no, my kids are not average. In some ways they’re far above.
And I certainly don’t want my epic novel to be average. It’s gonna shine.
So what’s the opposite of the word “average”? Is it unique? Is it special? Is it simply “outside the norm”? Underdog? Is there one?
A werewolf and a vampire go into a bar. The vampire orders a glass of red. The werewolf eats the bartender. The vampire says, “Next time, I’m buying.”
I have no idea where that came from, other than somewhere inside my (opposite of average) brain. Thank you very much.

“Average” has very little meaning in my life. It’s a statistical range – people are real, and have real lives. Real lives have more depth, texture, and layers than “average” can ever define.
I love your joke, and this post!

It’s always about the person and not how the mainstream expect them to fit in right? So a person isn’t disabled. They are living with a disability.
And I really, really laughed at that joke.

🙂 That joke was nice.
And nothing about you is average Linda. I would go with the word ‘exceptional’.

Aww, thanks KG. 🙂 Glad you liked the joke. And yes, I think the word exceptional pretty much nails it as the opposite of average. 🙂 Thanks for that.

You’re a Maple Leafs fan?!?! Shew. Do you know what the Maple Leafs and Billy Graham have in common? They are the only ones who can get twenty thousand people to jump to their feet and holler “Jeeesus Kehrist!” Ha! Or how about the guy who had a ticket for a Leafs game and accidently left it in the dash of his unlocked car parked on Bloor Street. When he realized what he had done, he ran back to his car and found two tickets on the dash. Ha!
Anyway, “average”. Kind of like normal. I once saw a big sign (the type with the moveable letters) in front of a small rural church in the Ontario town of Russell. It read: “Everyone is normal until you get to know them.” I figured that about sums it up.
Great post Linda. Thank You.

Hahaha! I actually laughed out loud at the tickets. I suppose that sign was right, when you think about it.
Thanks very much Paul – glad you enjoyed the post. 🙂

Love that joke! you are anything but average, my dear! I am over 60, so slowly fading out of the “norm” but I can make a lot of noise; I’ve often been called “marginal” okay, outisde the norm is good…depending on who is measuring. When kids call and mention they have a learning disability, I correct them…Oh, you mean you learn differently…great read as always, Linda!

Thanks so much Oliana. 🙂 That’s such a wonderful way to word what goes on inside the heads of people who, quite literally, learn differently.
Glad you enjoyed the post. 🙂
